* AbandonShipping: Konoha/Ene was quite popular with the early fandom, but as the series progressed on and it became more evident that Konoha was not Haruka, a lot of fans jumped the ship. The unhealthy parts of the ship were only realized more and more that Ene's treatment of Konoha is fueled by bitterness and being stuck in the past.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation
** Is Shintaro a cruel and selfish person who needlessly lashes out at basically everyone and pins the blame of things on others? Or is he a [[AmbiguousDisorder blatantly]] [[NervousWreck mentally]] [[DrivenToSuicide ill]] character with emotional problems and a TraumaCongaLine only making said problems worse?
** Did Ayano commit suicide solely out of wanting to [[HeroicSuicide protect her family?]] Or was she subconsciously trying to find any way to [[DrivenToSuicide commit suicide]] in between things like terrible grades and blunt friends? Did she try to frame an already wanted suicide as a good thing with some sort of messiah complex?
** Is Hiyori a [[AlphaBitch rude and bitter character]] who disregards the feelings of Hibiya for no reason whatsoever? Or is she a young girl lashing out after being stalked at her hometown by people like Hibiya, [[StalkerWithACrush who have her schedule memorized and shrines dedicated to her?]]
* AngelDevilShipping[=/=]MindGameShip[=/=]FoeYay: [[spoiler:Kuroha]]/Marry is rather popular with some fans despite their interactions with each other in [[spoiler:Outer Science]] being decidedly [[EvilGloating less]] [[ForcedToWatch than]] [[EverybodysDeadDave friendly]].
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Momo. Her fans like her for being the most [[AngstWhatAngst upbeat]] [[GenkiGirl girl]] among the cast full of {{woobie}}s and for doing her best to cheer up [[DeadpanSnarker Hibiya]] after his incident with Hiyori. Her detractors however, find her backstory to be forced and her character to be boring, and they also complain about Momo [[SpotlightStealingSquad tending to wrest away the spotlight]] from the [[GenericGuy more interesting characters]]. Her being one of [[CreatorsPet Jin's favorite characters]] doesn't help. Might count as FridgeBrilliance considering her eye ability.
** [[spoiler: Kuroha]] too in some smaller circles, due to the fact he mostly serves as a plot device and originally wasn't even supposed to be part of the story until he was inserted into an official Music Video. There are also people who get annoyed whenever [[DracoInLeatherPants fans are diehard for him]], finding him overrated.
** Depending on who you ask, Ene is either charming, sympathetic, and one of the series' funniest characters, or an annoying {{Jerkass}} who messes with Shintaro for no reason. Not helping her case is that Shintaro used to butt heads with [[spoiler: her past self Takane]], making her behavior today come off as petty revenge when he received [[TraumaCongaLine more than enough karma]] for his treatment of [[spoiler: her as Takane.]]
* BrokenBase:
** There seems to be a division within the fandom Shaft's renderation of Kagepro. Some people believe Shaft is doing an amazing job at it while others feel Shaft is being lazy. [[RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment Any more on either side seems to light very heated discussions.]]
** Kanokido has caused some fights to break out, especially with Kidomomo fans. Some see it as [[BrotherSisterIncest an incestuous ship,]] and others [[NotBloodSiblings don't see them as brother and sister at all.]] After the Future anthology was released, it led to some really nasty spats and threats from both parties.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: In the fifth episode of the anime when Ene and Kano play a ''TabletopGame/YuGiOh'' type game in a competition to embarrass their fellow teammates. It doesn't do much more than serve as humor or filler.
* CompleteMonster: [[TheChessmaster The Snake of Clearing Eyes]], or [[ManipulativeBastard Wide-Open Eyes Snake]], [[FanNickname nicknamed]] [[spoiler:Kuroha]] [[FanNickname by the fandom]], is one of [[GorgeousGorgon Azami's]] snakes, and is the BigBad of the entire franchise. After scoffing at [[spoiler:Shion and Marry's]] deaths, he manipulates Azami into letting him and the other snakes free so they can live, allowing him to escape into the real world and possess Kenjirou Tateyama. He then goes about granting his host's subconscious wish to see his deceased wife again by taking over his body while he sleeps and [[WouldHurtAChild arranging the murders of his students]] [[spoiler:Takane and Haruka]]. When [[spoiler:Kenjirou's daughter Ayano]] discovered his plans, he tricked her into killing herself in an ill-fated attempt to thwart him, smirking sadistically as the Daze swallows her. He then forces her stepbrother Kano to help him cover up her fate as a regular suicide before carrying out his murders without incident. Two years later, he still hasn't fulfilled Kenjirou's wish since doing so would end his existence, and when the [[spoiler:Mekakushi Dan]] discover him, he injures and possesses Konoha and proceeds to murder all of them in quick succession, forcing Marry to reset the timeline to avert this tragedy. He repeats this an unknown amount of times before finally being defeated in [[Anime/MekakucityActors the anime]]. Murdering the same group of teens over and over again partly to maintain his own existence and partly because [[{{Sadist}} the suffering of others amuses him,]] the Snake of Clearing Eyes was willing to lock the entire world in a GroundhogDayLoop just to maintain his existence for eternity.
* CrackPairing: Despite the Kagerou Project fandom's arguments over some ships, most, if not all, of the fandom can agree that [[CargoShip Shintaro/Soda]] is canon.
* CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming: ''Moon Viewing Recital'' as a whole. Especially considering it came after many really [[TearJerker depressing songs.]] [[ManicPixieDreamGirl Momo's]] interactions with [[DeadpanSnarker Hibiya]] are all too cute, and it's nice to watch Momo help Hibiya slowly get over his SurvivorGuilt was very nice to watch. [[AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther Shintaro watching out for Momo at the end made it sweeter.]]
** ''Summertime Record'', and the fandom's response to it. [[spoiler: Ayano would be proud.]]
* EnsembleDarkHorse:
** [[MessianicArchetype Ayano]], who was already pretty popular way back when she was first introduced in Toumei Answer (in which she served as {{The Lost Lenore}} to Shintaro). [[spoiler:And when she was confirmed to be [[BigGood Mekakushi Dan's founder]] and Kido, Seto, and Kano's [[CoolBigSis surrogate older sister]]]], her popularity skyrocketed and she's now arguably the most popular female character, pretty impressive given that she's a {{posthumous character}} only seen in flashbacks.
** [[spoiler:'''Kuroha''']] due to being [[spoiler: EvilIsCool and EvilIsSexy. He's also loved for his general PsychoticSmirk and AxCrazy nature making him a DracoInLeatherPants.]] It helps that he has heavy plot relevance and his song Outer Science is a WhamEpisode that's catchy.
** Hibiya has his fans largely due to being an adorable [[LittleMissSnarker snarker]] and for having the most iconic song, ''Kagerou Daze''.
** Kano also has a pretty large fanbase due to both being funny, and also having a heartwrenching backstory. Some, though, feel the [[TraumaCongaLine his backstory and subsequent suffering]] make him narmy and a [[SpotlightStealingSquad jerk who gets too much attention]] both by Jin and the fandom itself.
* EvilIsSexy: A pretty decent number of the fandom finds the Eyes Wide Open Snake's [[spoiler:Kuroha]] form attractive, to the point where it is often subjected to the DracoInLeatherPants treatment.
* FanonDiscontinuity: Due to the anime's questionable quality and how its version of the story worked out, many fans who were in the fandom before the anime aired have chosen to either ignore its existence, or take it for what it is while not actually considering it part of the canon.
* FanPreferredCouple: [[BroodingBoyGentleGirl Shintaro/Ayano]], [[MasculineGirlFeminineBoy Haruka/Takane]], and [[RescueRomance Seto/Marry]] all receive enough {{Ship Tease}} to be borderline [[OfficialCouple canon]]. [[BelligerentSexualTension Kano/Kido]] is a bit more [[WillTheyOrWontThey in the gray area]], but the pairing is nevertheless incredibly popular with fans. [[ToyShip Hibiya/Hiyori]] could also count, or alternatively, [[LikeBrotherAndSister Momo/Hibiya]].
** For the {{Ho Yay}} variant we have [[ChildhoodFriends Seto/Kano]], [[FoeYay Shintaro/Kano]] and [[HeterosexualLifePartners Konoha/Shintaro]] or [[spoiler: [[{{FoeYay}} Kuroha/Shintaro]]]]. For the {{Les Yay}} variant we have [[TomboyAndGirlyGirl Kido/Momo]] and [[RomanticTwoGirlFriendship Momo/Marry]].
** While not as popular as the above pairings, [[SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl Shintaro/Ene and Kano/Momo]] both have their fans. It helps that the former pairing doubles as VitriolicBestBuds while Kano is prone to flirting with Momo.
** [[BirdsOfAFeather Shintaro/Marry]] also has a good amount of followers.
* FunnyAneurysmMoment: Shintaro making a [[BlackComedy wacky joke about killing himself]] upon Ene's comment seems funny, if not a little dark when it's said in the first novel. Its comedy value quickly plummets once you watch Lost Time Memory or episode eleven of the anime
* HilariousInHindsight: Takane making a huge deal out of calling Shintaro 'Master' if he beats her in [[UltraSuperDeathGoreFestChainsawer3000 Dead Bullet]] is hilarious, once you think about how it's truly Ene making this promise.
* HoYay[=/=]LesYay: With mainly the pairings Kidomomo, Setokano and Konoshin.
** The creators were talking about their 'fetishism' and went on talking about Konoha and Shintaro's relationship
** [[spoiler: Haruka]] is the person that offered Shintaro his first Cola... which is his {{trademark favorite drink}}.
** Name one Konoshin shipper that doesn't [[http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130614170930/kagerouproject/images/8/82/Reason3.jpg dig this.]]
* HollywoodPudgy: According to Kido and Shintaro in the novels, Momo's quite heavy.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Haruka and Takane being [[spoiler: Konoha and Ene's former selves]] is considered common knowledge among the fandom. It's also hard to talk about Ayano's importance to the plot without eventually mentioning her being [[spoiler: the Blindfold Gang's founder, adopted older sister to Kido, Seto, and Kano, and suicidal messiah.]]
** Additionally, the fact that Hibiya is listed as a member of the Blindfold Gang should be a big enough hint as to who survives the GroundhogDayLoop between him and Hiyori.
** Early on in the anime's airing, new fans had gotten upset over being spoiled about certain things such as characters having eye abilities- something that is considered the most basic knowledge among the fandom.
* MemeticMutation: "May soda be eternal" and SodaShin in general
** [[spoiler: Kuroha]] being associated with bees, in reference to his color scheme.
** "Welcome to my womb".
** Konoha's expressions in the announcement of his voice actor.
** "Maternity Spiral"
** "Screw you cat."
* {{Moe}}: [[CuteMonsterGirl Marry]], [[GentleGiant Konoha]], [[NiceGuy Haruka]], and [[PerpetualSmiler Seto]]. While [[AdorablyPrecociousChild Hibiya]] is often portrayed as a BrattyHalfPint, Otsukimi Recital just goes to show how adorable the little guy is beneath all that [[DeadpanSnarker snark]].
* MoodDissonance: [[CanNotSpitItOut Yuukei Yesterday]] is a cute, fun song about Takane's feelings for Haruka, except towards the end, when we see [[JustBeforeTheEnd her video game persona]] running up a hill and crying... Oh god. That means that [[spoiler: the song ends with Takane in the Daze, going through the events of Headphone Actor]]. The song, however, never loses its cheery vibe.
* MoodWhiplash: In the Mekakucity Records CD, [[NightmareFuel Outer Science]] plays after [[TearJerker Re:Gunjou Rain]]. And after Outer Science? The upbeat Otsukimi Recital, followed by Lost Time Memory.
** The order in which the music videos were released as well. After Konoha's State of the World, a continuation of Heat Haze Daze, Kisaragi Attention was released, which is one of the happiest songs in the series. And following Yuukei Yesterday's release was the [[NightmareFuel Nightmare Fuel-induced]] Outer Science. [[CrowningMomentOfHeartWarming Summertime Record]] was completed two days after.
** Chapters 17 and 18 of the manga. In Chapter 17, we're finishing off Takane's route, it's a little bittersweet, but still optimistic. Then at the very end we see [[spoiler:Kuroha]]. [[spoiler:In Chapter 18, Kuroha immediately brutally murders Seto, Kido, Kano and Ene on page before Marry resets the route.]]
** Happens again in the second route of the manga which goes from the lighthearted ShipTease of Mary asking if Kano likes Kido to [[spoiler: Kano finding Kido stabbed to death in an alley]] almost right after.
* MoralEventHorizon: Route XX Shintaro arguably crosses it when he [[spoiler: deletes Ene upon her encouragement for him to leave his room.]]
** [[spoiler: Kuroha crosses it prior to the series' beginning]], when he [[spoiler: tricks Ayano into committing suicide.]] Or, arguably even earlier when he [[spoiler: manipulates Azami into creating the Daze, knowing fully that she'd suffer forever because of it.]]
* {{Narm}}: Ayano's Theory of Happiness in the anime is... [[NightmareFuel Something, alright.]]
* NightmareFuel: [[spoiler: Kuroha]]'s expression in the [=MekakuCity Records=] crossfade PV.
** Outer Science in general.
*** Everything about [[spoiler:Kuroha]] for that matter.
** Marry, screaming silently at the end of ''Outer Science'' [[spoiler:as her hair falls out, forms into snakes, turns black and scales grow over her skin.]] Seeing the series' most {{Moe}} character like that is... just upsetting.
* NoYay: Any ship involving Kuroha, due to how much suffering he's inflicted on pretty much every other character in the franchise. ''Especially'' Shintaro; Crimes against him include driving his best friend Ayano to suicide, forcing Kano to pose as Ayano's corpse, indirectly causing Shintaro to blame himself for her death, killing his other two friends and turning them into a cyborg and an AI, and severely injuring another one of his friends and possessing their body.
* SacredCow: The original Vocaloid songs are so universally treasured that merely criticizing them is considered blasphemy. Part of the backlash against the [[MekakucityActors anime]] was how much it diverged from the original. Its rendition of ''Ayano's Theory of Happiness'' was particularly loathed for turning one of the most beloved songs in the fandom into a poorly animated CGI nightmare.
* TheScrappy: Hiyori is seen as this by some for her callous treatment of Hibiya.
* TheWoobie:
** Shintaro was always apathetic with the world, and had a hard time caring about things because of [[InsufferableGenius how easy]] [[SuperIntelligence it all was]] to him. When he finally made some vague friends, one committed suicide, and the other two were murdered. He [[RepressedMemories managed to block out the deaths of the latter two,]] and lock himself in his room for a full two years over the trauma. Even after [[BittersweetEnding Summertime Record]] and [[HappilyEverAfter Mekakucity's]] endings, it's implied he still has his power and remembers all the timelines. While everyone else is happy and can finally relax, he'll forever remember timelines and timelines of things like [[KillEmAll Outer Science.]]
** Kano was [[AbusiveParents beaten by his mother]] from a young age, but he still loved her anyway. Trying to protect her jewelry from robbers, both he and his mother were stabbed to death. He came back with the Snake of Deceiving Eyes, who [[BecomingTheMask Encouraged him]] [[ConsummateLiar to lie.]] Then, when he finally found a [[HappilyAdopted new family]] his new [[CoolBigSis big sister]] and rolemodel committed suicide. He was forced to work for the Snake of Clearing Eyes after that, practically scheming against his own family under the risk that they'd be killed otherwise. He has to shoulder this all on his own, and keep up a masquerade that everything's okay.
*** The mother incident is made significantly worse with the fact that he associates physical harm with himself so strongly that it deactivates his power.
** Marry spent 40 years living inside a small secluded house, warned by her loving mother of the dangers of going outside. When she went outside anyway, humans ambushed her and murdered her and her mother. She came back with the Snake of Combining Eyes, and spent more than 100 years locked inside her house, thoroughly terrified of encountering any more humans. When she finally does make a friend in Seto, the Snake of Clearing Eyes eventually swoops in and murders everyone Marry cares about purely to drive her across the DespairEventHorizon so that she'll reset time. And yet despite her traumatic early years, Marry retains her [[NiceGirl kind demeanor and willingness to make new friends]] out of desire to not spend any more time alone.
** Kenjirou lost the love of his life, and has the [[BigBad Snake of Clearing Eyes]] put inside of him. In a futile effort to make itself immortal, the Snake manages to drive his biological daughter to suicide. Not only that, but it also kills his two dearly beloved students. His three adopted children then proceed to run away and leave him all alone. Despite all of that, he continues to be kind and patient with a [[BookDumb student like]] [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Momo.]]
* TearJerker: [[spoiler: Ayano's suicide]], and Shintaro's reactions in ''Toumei Answer'' and ''Lost Time Memory''.
** And then ''Ayano's Happiness Theory'' came along and made it even worse.
** [[spoiler: Challenge. Watch Yuukei Yesterday and then Outer Science. Or just read the manga up to Haruka's death and try NOT to cry a single time. If you win: good for you. If you lose: congratulations and welcome to everyday life of the fandom ]]
** The Kagerou Daze time loop, and its affect on Hibiya in Otsukimi Recital. The poor kid is literally having flashbacks from minor things like seeing a cat or a child on a swing.
* UncannyValley: A lot of people are not fond of the absurd CGI in Ayano's Theory of Happiness during the anime. For understandable reasons.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: Kido. Even everyone in-universe who meets her initially describes her as having a masculine appearance!
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Though Ayano obviously always meant well, and everything she did was for the sake of her friends and family, many of those things were... not very well thought out. [[spoiler: Such as pulling off her suicide stunt when ''Kano was right there'', and just in general getting him involved in a situation that ultimately made his already poor emotional health even worse. Not to mention Kido and Seto who also suffered from losing her. Ayano was so concerned for her adopted sibling's lives that the emotional impacts her death would have on them apparently slipped her mind.]]
* WhatAnIdiot: During her confrontation with the Snake of Clearing Eyes, Ayano deduces that if she [[spoiler: goes in to the Daze and takes a snake from there, his plans will be thwarted since he won't be able to gather up all of them.]] The Snake of Clearing Eyes claims that this is indeed true.
** '''You'd Expect:''' For Ayano to realize that the Snake of Clearing Eyes is bullshitting her, since there's no way he'd casually admit that there's a way to stop his plans that she could do at that very moment. From there, she'd escape and warn Haruka and Takane about what [[spoiler: Kenjirou]] is planning.
** '''Instead:''' She believes everything he says and [[spoiler: jumps off the school roof to her death. Surprise, surprise, the Snake was lying and Ayano killed herself for no reason, and with her out of the picture, the Snake goes about his plans to kill Haruka and Takane without interference.]]
