  • Accidental Innuendo: At least three sentences in story mode send players into giggles in the English version due to how naughty they sound.
"Zeppeli drives his fist deep into Dio, hoping to blast his Hamon energy into him."
"Okuyasu takes Rohan from behind, warning him not to make a move."
"Touching Gyro's weapons miraculously grants Johnny the ability to feel movement in his legs again."
  • Americans Hate Tingle: The game was very well received in Japan, earning a perfect score of 40 out of 40 in Famitsu (then again, Famitsu is fairly notorious for grade inflation). Compare that to its reception in the west (particularly in America) where reviews fall on the lower end of the spectrum, with criticisms centered on its lack of depth compared to other fighters and Campaign Mode's microtransactions. On the other hand, general public in the west is much more welcoming of the game compared to the critics.
  • Broken Base: There is still debate over whether the localization counts as Woolseyism or Macekre: aside from the name changes, many characters' quotes were given subtitles that did not accurately convey what the characters were actually saying, one of the biggest examples being Jolyne's "Balls deep!" quotes (vs. the original's "1000 pitches"). Proponents of the former think this to be amusing, while proponents of the latter feel it to be an unnecessary change that detracts from the experience. Thankfully, R completely retranslated the script, and is much more faithful.
  • Catharsis Factor: Given how some battles in the actual series end in a curb-stomp in favor of the villains, or how some characters intending to fight the villains never get the chance, the matchups this game provides can be immensely satisfying:
    • Caesar now has the chance to defeat Wamuu fair and square, and not die in the process.
    • Lisa Lisa can now fight and defeat Kars without getting easily taken out by Kars cheating, while in R, Stroheim can now successfully blow Kars to smithereens when his previous attempts had been tanked.
    • Kakyoin, Old Joseph, and Hol Horse are now able to go toe-to-toe with DIO without getting immediately Worfed by The World.
    • Avdol has the ability to properly fight Vanilla Ice now instead of being One-Hit Killed, and Iggy can also get a victory without having to be kicked to death. Likewise, Avdol can now fight Hol Horse (and by extension, J. Geil) without needing to be put out of commission.
    • Shigechi and Koichi can now take down Kira with ease and without getting pummeled into oblivion. Likewise, Rohan can now fight Kosaku proper without immediately getting obliterated by Bites the Dust.
    • Polnareff has the opportunity to fight Diavolo in his prime once again and win, and thanks to All Star Battle R, Abbacchio can fight the man who killed him without getting taken out by a cheap shot, Trish can now take her father out, and four members of La Squadra di Esecuzione (Prosciutto, Pesci, Ghiaccio, and Risotto) can fight the Boss like they had planned to do from the start.
    • Jolyne, Ermes, and Anasui are now able to defeat Pucci whilst he has Made In Heaven activated, and in All Star Battle R, not only can Jotaro with Star Platinum: The World finally score his win against Made In Heaven, but Foo Fighters can now defeat Pucci when they previously couldn't, and Weather Report can defeat his brother like he came so close to doing.
    • Since Valentine doesn't have Love Train, Gyro is now able to defeat the President without his attacks getting reflected right back at him, and now in All Star Battle R, Diego can properly defeat Valentine like he thought he had up until his death.
    • Because they're in a combat setting as opposed to a race, Johnny in R is now able to efficiently fight Alternate World Diego and beat him, rather than being grossly outmatched by him and having Lucy deliver the finishing blow.
    • The assist feature of R allows sidekicks to properly help their friends in the battle against the evil foes, such as Speedwagon or Zeppeli helping Jonathan fight Dio, Caesar and Stroheim helping Joseph and Lisa Lisa fight the Pillar Men, Bucciarati, Narancia, and Fugo helping Giorno and Polnareff fight Diavolo, and so on.
  • Common Knowledge: Many fans will tell you that the localized name for Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is "Filthy Acts at a Reasonable Price". Technically, this isn't true. While Funny Valentine does indeed say this, it's actually just a Catchphrase, with the localized name being simply "D4C".
  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome: Due to having extremely high combo potential and a multitude of unblockable attacks while not being as busted as Diavolo was in the original release, online lobbies in All Star Battle R tend to be flooded with DIO players.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • There is something morbidly hilarious that for the loading/save icon, it is Koichi Hirose under the effects of Heaven's Door. Heaven's Door "opens" a person like a book, which flipping through the pages, makes it look like the victim's skin is being flayed.
    • Josuke's GHA, when used against Johnny, has him heal his crippled legs then re-makes him into a cripple.
    • Abbacchio's GHA can essentially have Iggy kicked to death again, except multiplied by three by the end.
  • Good Bad Bugs:
    • If either Jotaro or DIO has full meter, it's possible for them to stop time and immediately hit you with their GHA, which also stops time, doubling the Color-Coded Time Stop effect.
    • Countering Diavolo's time skip with a projectile and another reversal leads to some interesting effects.
    • Behold, invisible Diavolo!
    • Years after the release of the game, players have discovered the "rotate cancel", a powerful bug that allows to cancel any normal and special attack. The game allows players to mash the light button for an easy but weak combo, which can be easily interrupted by other moves. However, performing the light button mashing and then adding other inputs with the sidestep or "rotate" button during the animation will enable players to interrupt any attack, even Heart Heat Attacks, and allows one to create longer more powerful combos. That new mechanic redefined the meta, as several characters now have access to better combos while others don't profit from it as much.
    • Under normal circumstances, it would take too long for Enrico Pucci (Final) to utter the 14 Words, but it's easily spammable by canceling out of using the command between the uttering of each phrase, thus causing next no buffering time, which allows for Pucci to get access to C-Moon approximately 1.5x faster.
  • Growing the Beard: Patch v. 1.03 is considered to have improved the game immensely, adding an anti-infinite mechanic, nerfing the game breakers while giving them some form of compensation, and introducing more tools for every character, the most significant of which is the ability to cancel into GHAs.
  • High-Tier Scrappy:
    • While in the original game, Kakyoin was just a high-tier, R ended up turning him into this. While the infamous Emerald Splash does move slowly, it is also easily spammable, making it hard to approach Kakyoin safely unless you happen to be playing as Bucciarati, Kars, Part 4 Jotaro, Alternate Diegonote , Funny Valentinenote , or Risottonote . However, even if you are using one of those six characters, Kakyoin has several attacks that can be performed quickly that also outrange most of the other characters on the roster.
    • Yukako is an absolute nightmare to fight against on higher difficulties if your character doesn't have projectiles, as she's a hyperagressive zoner with surprising range who's also capable of punishing opponents who try to get in close.
    • Fighting a skilled Narancia player is a truly annoying experience. Narancia has an assortment of spammable projectile moves that can be chained together easily. Sure, timing the inputs correctly takes practice, but a skilled Narancia player can easily deal massive amounts of damage quickly with him.
    • Diavolo's Stand, as expected, is a Game-Breaker. King Crimson can cancel the priority of your moves and attacks even while you're comboing him, resulting in you doing nothing to him and him negating the damage you did. As a result, expect to see him all the time online.
    • Risotto Nero is considered by most players to be one of the strongest characters on the roster. Through a combination of his ability to make himself immune to most projectiles, a strong projectile attack of his own that can be used as a normal projectile or an anti-air, and higher-than-normal attack speed that allows him to chain combos together well, he’s very difficult to fight. And beware of his counter move: not only does it do a lot of damage, but it also inflicts a status effect that leaves you severely weakened, allowing Risotto to follow up with ease.
    • Upon the release of Alternate World Diego Brando, players quickly found that he has several exploits that make him a Game-Breaker. To start with, he has a few highly effective combos out of User Mode. On its own, that would be one thing, but Alternate World Diego's HH Gauge also fills quickly, so having long combos allows him to max his HH Gauge out early. And with a maxed out HH Gauge, his time stop executes much faster than it usually does, meaning that if he uses it immediately after a knockdown, it's very difficult to prevent. All of this means that unless you just don't let Alternate World Diego start one of his combos at all, you will end up taking a lot of damage going up against him.
    • If a player chooses Ikuro Hashizawa, they're almost guaranteed to win, due to Baoh having a frustrating combination of spammable projectiles, Unblockable Attacks, and easy-to-chain combos that require extreme precision to wiggle one's way out of.
  • I Knew It!:
    • JoJolion Josuke's appearance, although many fans had written him off.
    • Kosaku's inclusion for those who saw Yoshikage Kira as post-launch content.
  • It's the Same, So It Sucks: Several of the original release's problems are still present in R:
    • Many fans were disappointed to find out that JoJolion Josuke's movesetnote  would not receive an update in All Star Battle R, despite the fact that by the time All Star Battle R released, over a year had passed since JoJolion ended.
    • Josuke is still the only Part 8 character present in the base roster, despite the fan demand for characters such as Joshu, Jobin, Yasuho, and Rai. While Toru was added as the final character for Season Pass 2, fans are understandably still a little bitter that it took over a decade for another Part 8 rep to be added.
    • The inclusion of Jotaro Kujo (Part 4) did not go over well with many fans, as, unlike Dio Brando to DIO and Kosaku Kawajiri to Yoshikage Kira, there's barely any changes to Part 4 Jotaro's moveset to differentiate him from his Part 3 counterpart, with the exception of his HHA and GHA and the inclusion of his hand gun trick from the fight against Bug-Eaten. It's especially egregious when considering he still has Star Finger in his moveset, which is a feat that was only ever witnessed in Part 3.
    • The alternate costumes that were introduced in Eyes of Heaven were not ported over to All Star Battle R.
    • In All Star Battle R, Stands still only have two color schemes, despite the fact that Eyes of Heaven had four color schemes for each Stand.
  • Low-Tier Letdown:
    • Lisa Lisa is generally considered a highly underwhelming character due to her low damage output compared to other Hamon characters. In theory her long combo strings should be able to offset this issue, but in practice it's not as hard to escape them as it should be, with some of her follow-up moves being slow enough that often they allow her opponent to escape.
    • Esidisi is among the characters with the lowest health in the game, and many of his moves are not very safe to use. While his damage and combos are workable, they aren't good enough to compensate for his poor defense.
    • Old Joseph Joestar struggles from a combination of his moves being slow and not doing as much damage as he would have to to make up for his moves being as slow as they are without using a lot of the HH meter. He doesn't really have that many impressive combos either.
    • Iggy suffers from a combination of low health, inconsistent combos, and limited offensive options. While he does have several defensive options, his health is too low to make defensive play practical.
    • Akira Otoishi rarely sees competitive use due to a combination of his electricity mechanic forcing him to either use his HHA whenever it becomes available or leave himself vulnerable recharging his electricity, his special moves leaving him vulnerable, and his normals having short range.
    • Shigechi is generally considered to be if not the worst fighter in the game, then at least in the bottom three. The trouble with Shigechi is that his otherwise viable moveset is tied to his resource management mechanic. As a result, it's very hard to land a combo with Shigechi because he has to either sacrifice most of his damage to only use one Harvest unit at once, or drop his combo completely in order to summon more Harvests and give his opponent an opportunity to turn the tables on him again. Compounding the issue are his short reach, lower-than-usual health, and the general nerf that attacks that hit prone opponents received, when attacking prone enemies was an important part of Shigechi's moveset. As a result, he's only ever used as an Assist or when a significantly stronger player is playing a significantly weaker player and wants a Self-Imposed Challenge.
    • F.F., despite being one of the biggest newcomer announcements for R, does rather poorly in play, due to their plankton bullets causing little to no flinching, so even if they're able to combo their opponent, they end up not being able to stack up damage over consecutive hits or cause any substantial knockback. They aren't entirely without advantages, though, as their attacks are quick and they can be hard to pin down once they get the initiative.
  • Memetic Mutation: Baoh's HHA has given way to the reuse of an infamous line from the OVA: "BAOH HAS A LASER CANNON!"
  • Narm:
    • The localization dances around Valentine's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap GHA by renaming it to Filthy Acts At A Reasonable Price ("Time to perform some nasty acts, for a fair and honest price!"). The in-game glossary goes on to say that no one knows what this mysterious "D4C" abbreviation means.
    • Anasui's generic victory quote is "Give me your blessing! I can't get married without it!" This would make sense for his victory quote against Jotaro and a few other characters. But it's his generic victory quote, so he'll near-exclusively be asking it of characters like Esidisi or Funny Valentine, whose blessing of his potential marriage to Jolyne wouldn't mean a thing.
    • For some reason, All Star Battle R exclusively refers to Lisa Lisa as "Lisa Lisa (Elizabeth)". If this only happened in menus and such, it would be little more than an unusal creative decision. But the fact that it also happens whenever she is addressed or referred to in dialogue...
Joseph (unique battle intro against Esidisi): So you've figured out that Lisa Lisa (Elizabeth) has the Red Stone of Aja, huh?
Caesar ("round won" quip): Lisa Lisa (Elizabeth)'s training is paying off big time!
    • Unlike the DLC characters in Season 1, Abbacchio doesn't have a unique interaction for his encounter with Joseph. Instead, Joseph's introductory line is copied and pasted from his "Your next line is" taunt against Abbacchio, and it goes on for so long that it becomes extremely noticeable.
  • No Problem with Licensed Games: The original release has a 40/40 from Famitsu — the first licensed game ever to manage it. Some have even called it the best licensed anime game ever made. While its gameplay is rather simple, the massive roster, beautiful graphics, incredible amount of series faithfulness and absolute perfecting of the JJBA style make it rather fun to play.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
    • Dio Brando was considered a low-tier in the original ASB, due to not having a good air or anti-air attack as well as little combo choices, when those are vital for a character due to how this game is played at high level. R, however, remedies this by making him one of the best combo stackers in the game.
    • Koichi Hirose has quite the versatile moveset, but this is ultimately muddied by the fact that he can't effectively chain his attacks together in the original ASB and early versions of R, and any lingering effects they cause can easily be shrugged off by the opponent. Later patches to R largely remedied this issue, and Koichi is now considered viable, though not game-breaking.
    • Yoshikage Kira was initially poorly regarded in the original ASB, before being buffed in subsequent patches. Him being a limited edition DLC character already soured a lot of players, and the fact that he was vastly inferior to the Kosaku version, who anybody can use, either rubbed more salt into the wound or left the players who bought the normal version feeling validated for not bothering with him. Though, following patches made in the original ASB to his moveset, most of which were carried over into R, made it so he's now considered a competitively viable character who can stand toe-to-toe with Kosaku.
    • Scary Monsters Diego Brando was initially regarded as one of the weakest characters in the game due to relying on Corpse Parts to be able to use one of his important extenders for basic combos, and because while his combo strings are long, each individual hit did very little damage. While the former aspect hasn't changed, his damage was boosted enough in Patch 1.6 to make him viable for high-level play.
    • Zigzagged with Enrico Pucci (Final). While players like NoThankYou ended up vindicating him, proving both that Final Pucci's Whitesnake has advantages compared to Whitesnake Pucci and that C-Moon isn't a completely unrealistic objective in competitive play, Patch 1.5 effectively turned Made in Heaven into a Low-Tier Letdown. The status effect Made In Heaven placed on its opponent was largely the entire reason for attempting to reach Made In Heaven; without it, Final Pucci with Made In Heaven is nothing more than an ordinary fighter, with a significantly weaker move set than the Purposely Overpowered C-Moon. Increasing Final Pucci's speed even further than it already was proved it was not an effective way to compensate, as it ended up making it harder, rather than easier, for players to combo with Made In Heaven. Thankfully, Patch 2.0 slowed both Pucci and his opponent down, though not to pre-1.5 speeds, and buffed several of Pucci's moves, so Made In Heaven is now viable once more.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Appropriately enough, most of the character themes take musical cues and riffs from classic rock pieces based on their characters' inspirations. A few examples:
    • Will A. Zeppeli's theme, "Zeppeli the Eccentric", has parts of "Rock and Roll" and "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin. The ending theme for the "Stone Ocean" campaign also sounds like the beginning of "Stairway to Heaven".
    • Esidisi's theme, "The Disturbing Esidisi", has a piece that sounds like AC/DC's "Back in Black".
    • Old Joseph's theme, "Lovable Guy", takes various cues from many songs by The Beatles.
    • Pet Shop's theme, "Gatekeeper of Hell", has parts of it that are similar to "Always on My Mind", a song that the Pet Shop Boys covered.
    • Akira's theme has a piece that borrows from "Can't Stop" by Red Hot Chili Peppers.
    • Kira's theme, "Yoshikage Kira Just Wants a Quiet Life". has a riff of Queen's "Killer Queen". Oddly enough, Valentine's funky theme, "They Are All Those of Justice", has pieces of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust", fueling the rumor that his theme was Kosaku's original theme.
    • Bucciarati's theme, "Arrivederci!", is essentially a remixed "Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones, along with the horn part from "Bitch"note .
    • Weather Report's theme, "Torrential Downpour Warning", mixes elements from "Birdland" and "Havona" by Weather Report, both off of their Heavy Weather album.
    • Josuke (Part 8)'s theme, "Then Can You Tell Me... Who Am I?", has a guitar riff that is similar to a part of "Soft and Wet" by Prince, which is rather surprising, considering the artist's approach to copyright.
    • Baoh's theme, "Ultimate Weapon Baoh", sounds quite like "Tough Boy".
  • Tainted by the Preview:
    • Kakyoin was initially viewed as a High-Tier Scrappy due to cruising through the All Star Battle League thanks to the AI doing nothing but spamming Emerald Splash. In the released game, however, while Kakyoin is generally considered one of the stronger characters in the game, he is generally not considered a Game-Breaker due to how slow Emerald Splash is in the actual game.
    • While All-Star Battle R was well received when it was announced, many were disappointed that the remaster would not have rollback netcode. As rollback has become a standard feature for fighting games in recent years, its absence has turned off many potential players who were willing to try the game but want a smooth online experience. It also did not help that R producer Kentaro Matano confirmed before the game released that there are no plans to implement rollback netcode in the game as well as the official All-Star Battle R Twitter account reaffirming that implementing rollback is not possible.
  • That One Achievement:
    • In All Star Battle's Story Mode, one of the Diamond is Unbreakable battles has Josuke go up against Shigechi, with one of the Secret Missions being to land the "DORARARARARARARA!" skill. The problem is that said skill is an anti-air skill that has Crazy Diamond punch diagonally upward, meaning that the only way it will land a hit on Shigechi is if he jumps when in front of Josuke, something he seems to go out of his way to never, ever do. What makes this extra frustrating is that Josuke does have a skill that launches his opponent into the air, the heavy version of "Break through, beat you up!", but the problem is that that skill can only be used when Josuke is in "User Mode" (stand deactivated), while "DORARARARARARARA!" can only be used when Josuke is in "Stand Mode" (stand activated), and Josuke is not fast enough to use "Break through, beat you up!", activate his stand, and land "DORARARARARARARA!".
    • In All Star Battle R's All Star Mode, one of the Diamond is Unbreakable battles has Yukako go up against Bucciarati, with one of the Secret Missions being to land a 10 hit combo. Easier said than done, since none of Yukako's moves on their own hit that many times, neccessitating comboing from one move into another. The easiest route would be to use "I'm already inside your head." to implant some of Yukako's hairs into the opponent, which causes them to take a few extra hits of damage upon second activation, following up with "You dumbass!", Yukako's attack with the largest amount of hits, and finish off with a second activation of "I'm already inside your head." for a ten hit combo. Again, easier said than done, since "I'm already inside your head." only lasts for a few seconds, not helped by the fact that Bucciarati loves to use "Close, zipper!" to zip around back and forth across the battlefield, making it difficult to land the combo on him, not to mention the fact that his AI is especially aggressive in this battle, using "ARI ARI ARI ARI" and "Open, zipper!" to whittle down the player's health.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Amongst many actual improvements, the 1.02 patch also sped up the animations for supers and knockdown taunts. This is noticeably weird-looking in some supers, as well as weird sounding in others when a second voice clip starts before the first has ended.
    • The voice acting being completely redone in All Star Battle R, with characters from parts 3-6 now having their anime voice actors and characters from other parts having the same voice actors, but all of their lines being rerecorded, has received criticism, with many preferring the old voice actors' performances and feeling that the new recordings by the returning voice actors are flat and lifeless compared to the old recordings (likely due to poor direction), including returning anime voice actors who had better delivery in Eyes of Heaven.
    • The changes to the Stone Ocean content to avoid anime spoilers ruffled some feathers; namely, Pucci has had his moveset changed to only use Whitesnake instead of all three of his Stands, and the Kennedy Space Center stage is completely absent, as is Jolyne's Irene costume. Though a free post-launch update later reimplemented these all back in, as well as added in Weather Report as an extra character, removing this content from the base game was seen as a poor move.
    • As R had the characters from the first six parts and their color schemes updated to match the anime, the original color schemes were demoted to alternates. However, for several characters, the difference is miniscule, leaving them with two color schemes that are very similar to each other, when All Star Battle had each color scheme be significantly distinct from each other. This is mainly an issue with characters whose colors have barely changed in the anime, DIO most notably.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The roster in All Star Battle R has been met with this, with only three fighters being completely new (Part 5's Prosciutto/Pesci and Ghiaccio and Part 6's F.F.) while Jotaro gets another slot. Part 8 got especially hit hard with this, as Josuke still remained as its single character, with Joshu and Yasuho stuck as stage hazards, as well as Josuke still retaining his moveset from 2012, despite the rerelease coming out after JoJolion's finale with many upgrades for him. However, there's still the possibility of DLC fixing this.
    • Josuke 8 from JoJolion in the R version is this. Despite All-Star Battle R coming after Part 8 ended, and thus has more content to draw from, his moveset and personality are still lifted wholesale from the base game, released when it was still starting. The fact that he is still stuck on his early self got particulary noticeable as the Big Bad, who only debuted in the last 20 chapters of the manga, got announced as a character.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Some characters surprisingly don't have special dialogue with each other. The most frequent example is no dialogue between Old Joseph and Caesar.
    • Regarding updates in R, Parts 1, 2, and 8 are still the only ones with only one stage each, despite also having stages from Eyes of Heaven (part 1's Joestar Mansion, part 2's Air Supplena Island, and part 8's Higashikata Estate) that could be ported over just as easy as other parts got. Adding salt to the wound is that, apart from Steel Ball Run, the Parts that got additional stages in R are the ones that already had two stages in the originalnote .
    • Many were disappointed that, while the DLC characters in R have unique character interactions, none of their opponents have any unique voice lines recorded for them, with the exception of facing another DLC character or Joseph, which is speculated to be because they had gotten Tomokazu Sugita back to record new "Your next line is" taunts. The biggest example of this is Risotto, as while he has special interactions for all Part 5 characters, none of them do and use existing voice lines instead when facing him.
    • R not getting an English Dub (not even post-launch ala My Hero One's Justice 2) hasn't sat well with some fans of the anime's dub. While the original release not getting one was understandable due to the series still being relatively obscure in the west at the time and that the dub of the anime didn't even exist yet, R's lack of one is seen as a huge missed opportunity because of not only the series being much more popular by then, but also because all parts of the anime up to that point (1-6) had been dubbed at the time of release. This not only could have meant less casting for the characters from later parts (and Baoh), but also a prime chance for the dub cast to also interact with characters from other parts. Not helping matters is that the English cast has had almost no chances to reprise their roles outside of the show itselfnote , unlike the Japanese cast having done so multiple times in other spin-offs (such as Last Survivor) and promotional material.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Shigechi as DLC came out of nowhere and added another Part 4 character to the roster. To add to the surprise factor, it had previously been made known that a guidebook for the game covered "32 characters + 2 from Downloadable Content", when 33 of those characters were already known. People expected someone a bit more momentous for the final, single-character reveal.
    • The same somewhat goes for Fugo. Not only did the man only have one real fight, and thus, not a whole lot to use for a playable appearance, but he pretty much bowed out right at the end of the first half of Part 5. Still, there are others definitively more unexpected than him...
    • ...Such as Ikuro Hashizawa, who is not from JoJo but from Baoh, a manga Araki wrote before JoJo.
    • When the All Star Battle R update was announced with the promise of nine brand new characters, a lot of people were expecting them all to be backports from Eyes of Heaven. While one battle screenshot of DIO seemed to confirm that with Trish, they were quickly thrown for a loop when an in-game menu screenshot revealed the existence of Prosciutto of all characters.
    • The July 2022 trailer brought the reveal of three new characters. The first two were Yukako and Part 4's iteration of Jotaro, both of whom were expected characters from Eyes of Heaven. What was unexpected was the appearance of Foo Fighters, who, up to this point, had never been playable in any games.
    • The final trailer released in August confirmed the last few characters. Trish and Prosciutto were expected due to being leaked beforehand, but even then players were surprised when it turned out that Prosciutto was actually a duo character with his partner Pesci, and immediately after, the final character for the base roster ended up being Ghiaccio.
    • While most of R's DLC characters in the first Season Pass were expected, being Eyes of Heaven carryovers in the case of Stroheim and Alternate World Diego, anime spoiler characters in the case of Weather Report and Pucci (Final), and thematically fitting with the base roster in the case of Risotto, very few were expecting Keicho Nijimura to become a playable character, especially considering he's a one-off antagonist who spent almost his entire fight in a supporting role while Bad Company did all the work.
    • After he was Dummied Out of Eyes of Heaven because the developers confirmed that they couldn't figure out a way to make his support-based Stand work in a combat setting, people had very little hope for Leone Abbacchio to become a playable character. Come the second Season Pass, however, and he's arrived fashionably late to the party with Moody Blues in tow, finally completing all of Team Bucciarati being playable in the game.
    • Zigzagged with the case of the final DLC character of season 2. While most players assumed that Toru was the most likely JoJolion character to be added due to his status as the arc's Big Bad, almost nobody predicted that it was actually Wonder of U - and only Wonder of U - that would become playable, with Toru only showing up in intro, Wonder of U's Great Heat Attack, and victory animations. By extension, no one would have guessed they'd also have two sets of intro animations and victory dialogue for both Toru and his Stand, a trait no other character in the game has.
  • Woolseyism: Several characters were renamed to get around copyright issues and do so while still referencing their actual names. For example, Vanilla Ice was renamed Cool Ice (a reference to Vanilla Ice's film, Cool As Ice). Some of these get pretty ridiculous, such as calling one of D4C's attacks "Filthy Acts At a Reasonable Price", and the sheer closeness to their original names makes it obvious that the translating team made it as transparent as possible as to what the original names are on purpose.
