YMMV / Imaro

Go To

  • Fashion-Victim Villain: Bomunu used to be a noble, and he still tries to dress the part.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: "Slaves of the Giant Kings", written twenty years before the Rwandan genocide, bears a strong resemblance to the aforementioned event. The two tribes in the story were even based on the Hutus and the Tutsi. Saunders' solution was to replace it with a different story in the revised edition.
  • Moment of Awesome: Imaro is naturally prone to them, but one that stands out is after he's earned his way into the haramia by taking twenty lashes from Mbuto without crying out (whereas no one before him has ever managed to take more than ten before begging for mercy). He gets up from the slab and, before passing out, says something that the haramia leader needs translated...
    Rumanzila: What did he say?
Kongolo: He said: "Was that supposed to hurt?"
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Kulu's death, and Imaro's reaction to it. That stupid cow really was the closest thing he had to a friend in the world.
    • Imaro's nightmares during his abduction by the haramia. He relives all the battles he's won... except this time, he loses each one. It gives a strong hint that while Imaro looks like an Invincible Hero from the outside, he sure doesn't feel like it.
