* AudienceAlienatingPremise:
** The announcement trailer for the game implied a straightforward crossover between ''VideoGame/ShinMegamiTensei'' and ''VideoGame/FireEmblem'' with gameplay similar to the ''Majin Tensei'' series of games, and was about the only information available about it for years. The first real trailer's revelation that this was ''not'' to be the case created a huge amount of bad blood and caused many potential fans to jump ship.
** Crossover elements aside, many fans have voiced discomfort with the game's focus on {{Idol Singer}}s and other teenage entertainers, regardless of how well the game handles them as story elements.
* AmericansHateTingle: The aforementioned IdolSinger focus. While teen idols are popular in Japan, as evidenced by the success of franchises such as VideoGame/TheIdolmaster and Anime/LoveLive, the West considers the industry to be saccharine, exploitative, or outright {{Squick}}y, so for them to feature prominently in a non-deconstructive manner (contrast ''VideoGame/Persona4DancingAllNight'') was seen as a huge strike against the game.
* AuthorsSavingThrow: The creators, acknowledging that the revealed game is probably drastically different than what most fans were expecting, promised their fans that more information would be given at a later date. This news were enough to satisfy some gamers who were TaintedByThePreview.
* AwesomeMusic:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iON8LyXYmBc "Reincarnation" by Kiria,]] the song that plays in the Nintendo Direct trailer.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wTqS8YMCpg Beastie Game]] by Tiki which plays during the E3 Trailer.
** [[spoiler: The vocal version of the Fire Emblem theme the cast sing before the final battle]] is either this or a horrid bout of cringeworthy {{Narm}}, depending on your preference. You can watch it [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTl8gDQiKiE&app=desktop here]]. (Major Spoilers)
* BrokenAesop: ATLUS making a game highlighting the [[IdolSinger Idol industry]] as a positive and enlightening career path is a tad ''odd'' seeing as just half a year earlier they released [[VideoGame/Persona4DancingAllNight a game]] with the main focus was to slap said industry with a '''massive''' TakeThat because of the exploitation of performers and SlaveToPR nature of the Idol Singer system, with an idol in said game even ''[[spoiler: [[DrivenToSuicide committing suicide]] due to overworked stress]]''.
* BrokenBase: After people were forced to wait ''two years'' for any actual information other than that the project existed, the trailer created a reaction extremely split between people who were excited and people who found it an utter travesty and a disgrace to both franchises. For several hours tons of fans were practically ''begging'' for this to be an extremely elaborate April fools' joke, considering the timing of the announcement. A different camp sees it as a relief, having worried that a more straightforward crossover as implied in the original teaser would have likely ended poorly.
** The pre-final-battle spontaneous rendition of the Fire Emblem theme that the heroes do (See MemeticMutation for details) has essentially two camps: those who think it's [[FauxHorrific the most perverse and disgusting betrayal of both proud series conceivable by man or beast]], and those who think it's [[SoBadItsGood gloriously campy]].
** The game getting an English release. Some fans are okay with having the game, while others would vastly prefer to forget it ever happened. Then there are those who are okay with getting the game, but are displeased with Nintendo Treehouse still doing the translation.
* ContestedSequel: There's the very-loud number of fans who, for either of the two reasons listed under AudienceAlienatingPremise, won't even touch it, those who have complaints about the game's bland main character, intense difficulty, occasionally-lengthy battle animations, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking the lack of representation for parts of the series outside the Akanea/Awakening games]], and those who think it's a perfectly good game that deserved better than to tank because of drama and fans angry that it wasn't something it never intended to be.
* ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontWatch: Although complaints from those who have actually played the game exist, the biggest and most vocal portion of the game's HateDom tends to come from the portions of the ''Atlus'' and ''Fire Emblem'' fanbases who haven't even bothered to touch the game and are working off its PR alone. The extreme commercial failure and lack of an English release does not help.
* CounterpartComparison: More than a few fans have noted the downright eerie resemblance between Tsubasa and [[VisualNovel/DanganRonpa Sayaka Maizono]], not helped by both characters being idols.
* DuelingGames: As its reveal trailer gives off a very ''Persona''-esque vibe, some of the more enthusiastic fans have taken to calling it the Wii U's [[ConsoleWars answer]] to the [=PlayStation=]-exclusive ''{{VideoGame/Persona 5}}'' (though, it's a more friendly rivalry, since both are by the same company).
* EnsembleDarkhorse: In a gameplay sense, Mamori is very well-liked by players due to her very useful StoneWall stats and ability to take attacks for allies. She also tends to be the last one in a Session chain which means she often gets the final hit on bosses, which has made her a minor MemeticBadass in streams. She's also one of the more tolerated characters because she is tied much more to older music, rather than being part of the much disliked Idol-aesthetic, which makes her likable even among people who otherwise hate the rest of the cast.
* FanNickname: Variants of "Persona: Fire Emblem Edition" or "Persona Not-5" have been floating around since the trailer. Whether said nicknames are meant to be [[BrokenBase derogatory]] or not is dependent on the speaker.
* FridgeBrilliance: The lyrics to Kiria's "Reincarnation" make a lot more sense considering her Mirage is none other than LadyOfBlackMagic and HeroicComedicSociopath Tharja.
** Doubly so since Tharja [[spoiler: is heavily implied to have been Rahjat in a previous/future life.]]
** Toma and Ellie's VitriolicBestBuds relationship makes a lot of sense knowing her Mirage is Virion, given how his interactions with his game's Cain archetype, Sully, started off.
* HarsherInHindsight: The jokes about how the game was doomed on reveal became a lot less funny when the game really did flop in Japan upon release.
* InternetBackdraft: Just to give an idea of just how severe the [[BrokenBase base is broken]] regarding this game, just mentioning this game can be enough to cause heated arguments that can quickly turn ugly.
* MemeticMutation:
** "There appears to have been a fusion accident".
** Chrom's DarkerAndEdgier redesign has led to a lot of jokes about Chrom being pissed about being rejected from Smash Bros and getting his revenge in this game.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTl8gDQiKiE&app=desktop "FAI-A-A EEEM-BU-REM"]] is starting to pick up speed.
* NightmareFuel: The first introduction to hostile Mirages is pretty disturbing. During what seems to be a normal audition, the interviewer suddenly breaks out into a subtle VoiceOfTheLegion and starts asking Tsubasa distrurbingly personal questions about her missing-presumed-dead older sister, before breaking out into a full NightmareFace [[GrossUpCloseUp right in front of the camera]] and summoning a ton of red cloaked Mirages to drain the entire audience.
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: When Virion was first revealed as a Mirage, response was lukewarm at best since he was never a particularly popular character in ''Awakening''. Once the game was released, it was found that he could promote to ''[[ProfessionalKiller Assassin]]'', complete with a very well-recieved InTheHood design and great stats.
* SpiritualAntithesis: to ''VideoGame/Persona4DancingAllNight''. [=P4DAN=] is a rhythm game spinoff of one franchise that acts as a [[TakeThat scathing critique]] to Japan's Idol industry, this game is an RPG spinoff of two franchises that has a more lighthearted take on the Idol industry.
* SpiritualSuccessor: With ''{{VideoGame/Persona 5}}'' apparently going in a different direction, people are speculating that this game will follow the formula set down by ''{{VideoGame/Persona 3}}'' and ''{{VideoGame/Persona 4}}''.
* TaintedByThePreview: When the trailer came out many fans from both the ''FireEmblem'' and ''ShinMegamiTensei'' fandoms were ''not'' ecstatic that the trailer was is much more LighterAndSofter compared to the very first teaser which indicated a tone that seemed a bit more in-line with ''Shin Megami Tensei''[='s=]. Some comments from producer Shinjiro Takada about how the game was built more off Atlus's "skill" did not help, particularly the FE fans irritated that their series is more or less being thrown under the rug. It's compounded by the fact that the "skill" people think of when they think of ''SMT'' is not the character writing but more of the demons and fusing alongside EndOfTheWorldSpecial plots. And a lot of people who were led to believe that the game would be a straightforward crossover were put off by the trailer consisting predominately of OriginalGeneration material.
** Later trailers continued to alienate portions of the fanbase due to the prominence of {{Idol Singer}}s, fanservice elements, and primary cast consisting of high schoolers, which combine to make the title look [[https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CBi5-v4WMAEWXnT.png more like a kooky teenage anime than a serious game]].
* ThatOneBoss: It's an Atlus RPG, [[ThatOneBoss/{{Atlus}} it's to be expected.]]
** The Chapter 4 boss, Excellus and [[spoiler: Tsurugi/Navarre]], is definately shaping up to be one of these. [[spoiler: Tsurugi]] buffs the evasion of pair of them with Sukukaja, and casts Counter on himself to deter ShootTheMedicFirst tactics, while Excellus uses elemental spells to hit your party's weaknesses and trigger Session Attacks with [[spoiler: Tsurugi]]. He's a BarrierChangeBoss, so no-one is safe from having their weakness targeted, and his barrier change comes with a strong party-hitting Almighty spell. And when he gets below half HP, Excellus starts spamming ''Ma-dyne'' spells! He also attacks twice per turn and [[DamageSpongeBoss has a crapload of HP.]]
* VanillaProtagonist: In terms of actual complaints about the writing, Itsuki is widely considerd to top the list, with many people who have played the game ([[BoxOfficeBomb not that there are many of them]]) noting that he is extremely bland and underdeveloped.
* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Say what you will about the game itself, but it, at least, looks really pretty.
* WinBackTheCrowd: A lot of detractors became more hopeful about the game when it was revealed the director of ''VideoGame/RadiantHistoria'' would be directing it, and he posted a blog showing he was clearly very passionate about the ''Fire Emblem'' series.
** On-release, the game was found to be just as NintendoHard as both franchises it takes inspiration from, ''especially'' [[ThatOneBoss the bosses.]] Whether or not this will help aleviate the AudienceAlienatingPremise is yet to be seen.

* SoOkayItsAverage: Overall, putting biases aside, people who have played the game have said it's an unspectacular if solid RPG hampered by some poor design elements, a rather average main character and a wasted crossover.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: In a gameplay sense, Mamori is very well-liked by players due to her very useful StoneWall stats and ability to take attacks for allies.
