- Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: When the plot needs to engineer a meeting between Jack and Mary, the job of getting him to her is handled by Renaldo the Talking Horse who is referred to by name although he never introduces himself, says exactly one line in a terrible accent, is seen for all of a minute, and is never seen or heard from except in his one-minute appearance. Apart from a whistling whiting, the horse is the only unusual animal in the film and is completely out of place.
- Hollywood Homely: Mary describes Martin as disgusting, with smelly feet. Martin is played by a thirty-six year old Liam Neeson. Who gets at least two shirtless scenes.
- Retroactive Recognition: Mrs. Plunkett is played by Liz Smith, who would later be best known for playing Mrs. Cropley in The Vicar of Dibley and Nana in The Royle Family.
