* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Lots of characters have different perspectives from fans.
** Is Cuddles a troublemaker who wants others to do dangerous activities, or does he want others to have fun and is unaware of how dangerous stunts can be?
** Is Giggles a slut who's more than willing to [[YourCheatingHeart cheat on her boyfriend]], did those events happen before she fell in love with Cuddles, [[BetterAsFriends or has she broken up with Cuddles before the episodes where she dates others]]?
** Is Lumpy a dimwitted moose that is a threat to civilization, or is he just trying to help his friends, but keeps on making careless mistakes that lead to their deaths?
** Is Petunia a true [[NeatFreak neat freak]], or did she [[FreudianExcuse suffer a severe illness]] that soon led her to keeping everything germ free and organized?
** Is Pop a truly [[ParentalNeglect neglectful parent]], or does he really care about his son and just simply makes careless mistakes (similarily to Lumpy)?
** Is Flaky a mentally unstable character that has a load of fears, a character that cares about her friends but is scared about facing any danger likely due to a tragic event she has faced, or is she the [[OnlySaneMan only sane character]] on the show that is trying to point out to everyone about all the dangers that happen?
** Is Disco Bear a pervert who loves flirting with women, or is he just trying to act cool and just doesn't know how to?
** Are Lifty and Shifty true thieves that truly [[AssholeVictim deserve to be thrown in prison]], or have they actually [[FreudianExcuse been poor once]] and are just [[WellIntentionedExtremist trying to avoid that from ever happening again]]?
** Is Splendid a part-time "superhero" that doesn't care about his job, or does he truly try his best to help others, but simply causes more problems than he solves?
** Is Lammy a psychopath who believes a pickle is killing others when it's really her doing all the killing, a killer that's trying to frame a pickle for all the killing, or is she a victim to Mr. Pickels who is really killing others and framing it on Lammy?
* AuthorsSavingThrow: After the backlash the TV series got for giving Sniffles overly brutal and painful deaths ("Tongue in Cheek", "In a Jam" and, to a lesser extent, "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "As You Wish") that went way beyond what happened in his earlier appearances, season 3 either had his deaths be instantaneous, thus painless, or had him not die at all. Season 4 seems to be continuing this trend.
** For those of you who aren't fans of the Ants, you'll be happy to know about their complete absence in season 3 (and, so far, season 4). The same goes for Lammy; her appearances in season 4 are significantly lesser than that of the previous season.
** Season 4 seems to be much more merciful to the likes of Petunia and Cub. They either live ("A Vicious Cycle", "Spare Tire", "Put Your Back Into It" and "Dream Job") or their deaths are, for the most part, instantaneous ("You're Kraken Me Up" and "Camp Pokeneyeout"). Considering these characters have had extremely painful deaths in the past, it's nice to see them not getting the short end of the stick.
* BaseBreaker: Lumpy. Fans either love him for his stupidity, or hate him and blame his low intelligence for most of the deaths.
** Splendid for his FailureHero status.
** Pop could also count for being a lethally irresponsible parent.
** To a lesser extent, Toothy and Cuddles, due to them not having much of a personality.
** Not a character per se, but rather a ''fan animation''. To elaborate: The official HTF website (now part of MondoMedia main site) used to have a Fan Fest section, where Mondo would pick a HTF-related fan video to be featured on the website. One of these is the infamous "All Work and No Belay" (not to be confused with the later official HTF episode "All Work and No Play"). It's actually a pretty decent fanmade episode, which can quite work with the show and might end up being a CrowningMomentOfAwesome for the fan animation's creator, but the fact that it was featured during 2011 (the show was at a hiatus that time) and the fanbase was on the verge of crumbling, the fan animation had single-handedly shattered the fanbase into little pieces and caused massive CreatorBacklash both from the creator of the fan animation and the fans whose [[OriginalCharacter fan characters]] were featured (as cameos, to be exact), due to other fans, haters, and former fans '''intensely''' flaming the animation and blaming Mondo for "stealing" fanmade content as filler. Most of the people who were involved with the fan animation ended up going their separate ways.
** Lammy and Mr. Pickels, especially for fans who rooted for Truffles in Vote or Die. Some fans like the addition of ''two'' characters, and consider Lammy herself as a nice female character addition (keep in mind that there were only three major female characters in the show, not counting spinoffs), while the duo's presence also makes other fans hate them due to Lammy having a less unique design unlike Truffles and having hints of ReplacementScrappy for Flippy (due to how Mr. Pickels's kills work in the show), or if the latter isn't the case, simply being an uninspired duo overall (dark side and kills being caused by mental illness are nothing new in the show...).
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: The second half of ''A Sucker For Love''. Most of the episode is a random montage of Nutty's fantasy about loving, dating, marrying, [[BreadEggsMilkSquick impregnating]], murdering for, and dying old with a box of chocolates.
* BrokenBase: Several examples.
** The "Breaking Wind" episode. Is the episode genuinely funny or extremely abysmal due to the use of a fart joke? Is the inclusion of a Literature/{{Twilight}} parody (the book that Splendid is reading) a good mockery of the book/film or [[FanDumb massively implying that the creators are actually interested in Twilight]]?
** [[OfficialFanSubmittedContent Truffles' Video Bomb Competition]]. Is this the sign that the creators have finally opened up to adding [[OriginalCharacter fan characters]] in an upcoming episode (albeit only one-time cameo like [[TheCameo Truffles]] himself), allowing the fans to finally see them in the official HTF style, or does this actually mean that Mondo is running out of ideas yet again? As mentioned before, to be fair, the winning character only ends up having a cameo appearance, while a few others that didn't end up in digital trading cards for everyone to see (only in the first event, though), but this still doesn't change the fact that there are many fans who are against this event.
*** For that matter, the fact that the voting is based on the number of Website/{{Facebook}} "likes" pretty much stirred up the fanbase, as not everyone uses Facebook. The less "social" ones (hurts even more if the character is very well-made) end up very unlikely to reach more than single-digit likes.
*** Really Good Unicornius joining the event. To explain: Unicornius is an [[StylisticSuck intentionally poorly-drawn unicorn]] made by Oliver Age 24, who also has a channel on Mondo focusing on "How to Draw" various characters from well-known franchises in the same ugly style. There were many problems caused by this single character: '''1.''' It's made by a person who is also part of Mondo, meaning that he could pretty much take advantage of the Facebook likes due to already gaining exposure from his videos. '''2.''' It managed to stay in the first place for a long time because of the previous problem, meaning that it's meaningless for the HTF fans to join in (until the HTF crew balanced things out by also letting the second place to be included). '''3.''' [[FanDumb The fans are worried that MLP ended up spreading to their beloved show, thanks to Unicornius being, well, a "magical" unicorn]]. A few HTF fans, however, don't mind seeing the unicorn joining in, both for being a "troll"-ish submission and for having a NonStandardCharacterDesign, hoping to see him getting the "HTF style" treatment... but the latter didn't happen, he kept his badly-drawn look and sloppy animation, causing more outburst (even more so after seeing Tricksy (who placed second), who actually looks like he belongs in the show, a few scenes earlier).
** The Love Bite short "On My Mind", especially for the shippers. It got to the point when its ''storyboard'' was first revealed, one fan was disillusioned enough to think that Giggles is Flaky with a bow, and when the short was finally released, the same fan probably thought "[[DieForOurShip Flippy killed Giggles because Flaky is still his one true love]]".
** The infamous [[ScheduleSlip hiatus period]] soon after "See You Later, Elevator" was released. The ScheduleSlip itself actually happened since 2010 (or probably much earlier), when there were only 3 episodes released that year, with one of them featuring new characters. Year 2011 got a lot of flak from the HTF fans for the (formerly unseen on the website) HTF Break shorts which mostly end with [[{{Cancellation}} "Happy Tree Friends is dead!"]]. The BrokenBase part of this issue: There are some fans (especially former fans) who thought that the show needs to finally end because they're tired of it and the show suffering from SeasonalRot, while other fans would like the show to continue, especially to expand more of Lammy and Mr. Pickels' character, as they only appeared in one episode that time. It even hurts that the Break "Happy New Year" (also an old HTF Break never seen before on the website) promised more new content yet the same year only provides '''one''' new, proper episode (and it's a Christmas special).
** Related to the above matter, the special "comeback" episode itself. "Clause for Concern" is the only proper episode released in 2011 to begin the end of the show's temporary hiatus. Fans are glad to see the show finally coming back, but the BaitAndSwitch-y nature of the episode, which makes the episode pretty much "bloodless" except for TheStinger, managed to stir up the fanbase once again. It doesn't help that the only death happening there seems to be rather uninspired. On the other hand, most former fans are not happy with the announcement of the episode, preferring the show to stay "dead".
** ''Deadeye Derby'' being iOS-only. Not everyone has an iPhone/iPad, and the fact that there's no announcement for other smartphone platform ports pretty much screws the poor fans over. It doesn't help that it, like ''Slap Happy'' (also iOS-only), cannot be played on the web.
** A minor one: [=FatKat=]'s appearance in the HTF Break short "Take Your Seat". Due to his appearance being nearly similar to a typical fan character (doesn't help that part of his head and a little bit of his shirt are the only parts visible), most fans (and former fans) call Mondo out for stealing the character and flame the creator of the supposedly-similar character for having the character featured, while other fans see him as an EnsembleDarkhorse. Others mostly don't care, because the arguing fans are in the wrong anyway ([=FatKat=] is the mascot of an animation studio).
** The [[CaptionHumor BlurB!]] episodes. Some fans like the humor and references provided by the captions, especially when the caption goes into LampshadeHanging regarding the show's/the "[=BlurB=]"-ed episode's nature. Others see them as pointless [[{{Filler}} filler]] and are not worth watching at all.
** Vote or Die, an event where fans got to vote for a new HTF character (in this case, between Lammy and Mr. Pickels versus Truffles). It was at first, an [[AprilFoolsDay April Fools']] joke (as shown in the "fake" results where Lumpy "won" instead), only during a later date, the voting results turned out to be true, with Lammy and Mr. Pickels winning. There are issues with this: '''1.''' The winning duo became [[BaseBreaker Base Breakers]] (explanation on the BaseBreaker section). '''2.''' Even before the voting was done, some fans would rather have all three to join in the show instead of having one of them kicked out and became TheCameo. '''3.''' Lastly, there are few fans who would rather keep the Vote or Die event as a proper April Fools' joke, and usually pretend that the three characters never exist in the show.
** In general, the show's community is divided into several groups: Regular fans who enjoy the show for what it is, fans who consider everything related to the show and/or its fanbase as SeriousBusiness, [[{{Shipping}} fans who are more interested in character relationships than the show's actual premise]], [[DarkerAndEdgier fans who prefer grimdark fanworks of the show instead of]] [[BlackComedy black comedy ones]] (this explains the difficulty in finding the latter fanworks), fans who are more interested in creating [[OriginalCharacter fan characters]] (SturgeonsLaw is in full effect here; and the same can be said to fans who like crossovers), fans who only prefer the bloodless side of the show, and the so-called "former fans" (may overlap with [[{{Troll}} trolls]]). The last of these is in quotation marks because unlike the other former fans that simply moved on and occasionally remember a bit about the show but simply treat it as one of their old interests, the other "former fans" either: 1) [[TookALevelInJerkass Have a huge pride of not liking the show anymore and usually being a jerk to his/her friends who are still interested]] (the equivalent would be "avoiding the show like a plague"). 2) They take advantage from knowing the show to search for (mostly) clueless fans to be ridiculed, mock the show and its fanbase, and make parody fanart that are usually based on the first two objectives mentioned before, usually to garner as much InternetBackdraft as possible.
* CreatorsPet: Lumpy for a great part of the fanbase. It doesn't help that there were only two TV episodes Lumpy didn't appear in. In some of these he didn't have much of a role other than just to be there. This is only justified by the fact that the writers seem to work on a "take the dumbest character in the series and throw him into jobs that require brains and see what happens" system.
** Another thing pushing him into CreatorsPet territory is that he doesn't die nearly as often as the rest of the cast. [[InvertedTrope Too Dumb To Die]], maybe?
** The Mole to a degree.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: The whole point.
* DesignatedHero: Splendid (intentionally).
** Lumpy, Pop and the Mole (though justified and probably intentional) in most of their staring roles.
** And, the biggest offenders, the Ants. No matter how much they'll torture Sniffles, they will always be portrayed as in the right.
* DesignatedVillain: Splendont (also intentional).
** Sniffles, specifically in "Suck it Up". Usually, it's Sniffles that causes the conflict, but in this episode, the Ants do. And Sniffles is seen as the antagonist because he rightfully gets mad and attempts to fight back.
** Lifty & Shifty, sometimes. "Dunce Upon A Time", "Swelter Skelter" and "Gems the breaks" come to mind.
* DracoInLeatherPants: Girls just can't seem to stop pairing up Flippy with their original characters... [[FanPreferredCouple or just Flaky]]. Arguably justified, as Flippy is only a Draco when he flips -- otherwise, he's a sweetheart.
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Flippy, Flaky and Splendid. There's enough pictures where they are hanging around, that people who knew nothing of the show would assume that it's only about them or as if they form the main trio of the show. The fandom created this perspective which imposed itself on the entire fanart and fanfiction. They're kinda like the [[Franchise/HarryPotter Harry, Ron and Hermione]] or [[{{Naruto}} Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura]], from the fandom's point of view. If you don't believe it, check out Pixiv, Zerochan and Deviantart. [[http://www.zerochan.net/278651# Some]] [[http://www.zerochan.net/293699 examples]] [[http://www.zerochan.net/592231 are]] [[http://www.zerochan.net/319673 here]].
** Splendont only appeared in one episode, and yet his popularity rivals that of some of the main characters. It helps that he's Splendid's {{evil counterpart}}.
** Despite only appearing for a brief 30 seconds in one episode before being killed off, Flippy's comrades, Sneaky and Mouse Ka-Boom (especially the latter) have just as many fans as the examples above.
** After the first [[OfficialFanSubmittedContent Truffles's Video Bomb Competition]] ended and the digital trading cards were released in packs, expect to see one or two characters featured in each pack to be this. Some fans even wish that those characters end up in the actual show instead of the winners, cameo or not.
** While he certainly has always had fans and wasn't, by any means, an unliked character, Sniffles' popularity has skyrocketed over the years with each appearance (from the TV series onwards). We might think it has something to do with him gaining a lot of sympathy points from his cruel deaths (though he is getting better treatment, as explained in the AuthorsSavingThrow point) and his battles with [[TheScrappy the Ants]]. While the Ants kept receiving more hate, Sniffles kept getting more love, in a IneffectualSympatheticVillain way.
** A somewhat obscure example is [=FatKat=] (the mascot of the now-defunct animation studio of the same name), who only appears as TheCameo in "Take Your Seat". Most clueless fans who don't know what he is supposed to be (thus, mistaking him for a completely new character) love him and want to see more of his appearance in regular episodes, despite the fact that it's just a guest cameo, as that same animation studio was responsible for the TV series.
* {{Fan Character}}s: Hundreds of them. Some of them are creative, and others [[MarySue not so much.]] One OC, a grey wolf named "Ale", who is often paired up with [[DracoInLeatherPants Flippy]], is quite the celebrity of the bunch, to the point where some fans either question if she's a real character or want to see her in an actual episode.
* FanPreferredCouple: [[MindGameShip Flippy and Flaky]] is the most popular couple in the whole fandom . One of the reasons people prefer them together is that Flaky appears to be Flippy's closest friend despite that he has killed her several times and that she develops a phobia of him in the latter episodes. Although the fact that he has stopped killing her recently, for an unknown reason, and a few other hints imply that he may like her.
** On the girls' part, even though Cuddles / Giggles and Handy / Petunia are [[OfficialCouple official couples]], in the anime fandom Giggles is commonly paired with Splendid, while Petunia is often paired with both [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys Flippy and Shifty]]. Flaky is a LauncherOfAThousandShips, as she's paired with almost every male character in the series (especially with Flippy, with which she makes the FanPreferredCouple). She's most commonly paired with Flippy, Nutty, Lumpy, Splendid, Splendont, Cuddles, or both Lifty and Shifty at the same time (although she's more often paired with Lifty, while Petunia is more often paired with Shifty).
** On the HoYay part, [[FoeYay Flippy/Splendid]] has the largest following, especially in the japanese fandom. One of the main reasons may be that people always wanted them [[FoeYay to fight each other]] so that they could see who would win. In Japan, it is probably the most popular pairing, after [[FanPreferredCouple Flippy/Flaky]]. Other common HoYay couples are: Nutty/ Sniffles, Splendid/Splendont, [[{{Twincest}} Lifty/Shifty]], [[{{Selfcest}} Good Flippy/Evil Flippy]], Giggles/Petunia, [[OT3 Splendid with both Shifty and Lifty]], Pop/Disco Bear, Lumpy/Russell and Lumpy/The Mole.
** Petunia/Disco Bear is the closest thing to the FoeYay side.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: The show's garnered a following in Japan. Certain characters are more popular overseas as well; there's a particular contrast in popularity between East and West regarding Lumpy and Mime, whereof the former sometimes receives disturbing amounts of love.
* HarsherInHindsight: The "moral" at the end of ''A Bit of A Pickle''. If Mr. Pickels truly isn't real... oh dear.
--> We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are.
* HypeBacklash: During the popularity poll, the last two characters standing in the final voting session were '''Flippy''' (who actually became the winner) and '''Flaky'''. It's safe to say that many fans consider the poll result to be predictable, as some fans consider both characters to be extremely overrated.
* IdiotPlot: Nearly every episode. Especially ones starring Lumpy.
* InternetBackdraft: Good luck finding anybody who likes ''"Copyright School"''.
* {{Iron Woobie}}: Handy; fans often feel awful for him for being an amputee, but he doesn't let said-condition stop him from tackling a situation. It also doesn't help that [[ButtMonkey he has the lowest survival rate in the series.]] Take, for example, ''Change of Heart'', where he is the only character that dies in the episode.
** What [[{{Pun}} hammers]] this home: right before his epic death in ''Don't Yank My Chain'', he just lets out a little whimper. [[TearJerker D'aaaaw!]]
* JerkassWoobie: Sniffles. Yes, he's trying to eat the ants, but that doesn't justify how much cold-blooded torture he suffers from them.
** How about Lifty & Shifty? Yes, they steal, are often very unsympathetic and [[AssholeVictim usually deserve what happens to them]], but their deaths are some of the most sadistic. And, unlike Sniffles, Petunia and Cub, who, in terms of deaths, are getting better, Lifty & Shifty's aren't. Just watch the recent "Buns of Steal" episode.
* MemeticMutation: A scene from "Letter Late Than Never" in which Cuddles finds Cub's pizza-like corpse inside a flattened box. This has been featured in a series of internet fads known as "''Dear, I Found _ in the Pizza Box''", where an image would replace Cub's body.
* MisaimedFandom: The fact that there are quite a lot of people who make OC Tree Friends and pair them off with characters, just like in any other popular fandom, makes you wonder if they actually saw the show.
** There's a surprisingly lack of gore artwork within the fandom. It doesn't pop up nearly as much as you'd expect for the series. Instead fans opt for more realistic violence and grimdark.
** Overall, it seems that there's just as much of a fandom for the character designs and "pre-continuity" SugarBowl as there is for the main show. [[note]]Explanation: hardly any continuity, characters who could be interesting if developed enough, and opportunities for just about any genre with them - truly a fanwriter's (or artist's) dream, as your imagination is the limit while you still can "cash in" on how obscure fanwriters receive more attention than obscure writers of original works. Doesn't stop SturgeonsLaw, though.[[/note]]
* MoralEventHorizon: Shifty crosses it when he leaves Lifty to die in the submarine, just so that he could survive and have all the gold. He later receives a KarmicDeath.
** Lumpy crosses this the moment he dropped [[TheWoobie Toothy]] into a box full of active, razor-sharp toy teeth, just so he can make a few extra dollars off of the latter's organs.
** And then there's the Ant family. Sweet Mercy Lewis, THE ANT FAMILY. The divers entries about "Tongue in Cheek" make it extremely clear that they've cemented their crossing of the MEH.
* NightmareFuel: Particularly if any small children accidentally watch it. And some older viewers too, if they aren't into that sort of thing.
* NoProblemWithLicensedGames: Complaints about {{Freemium}} games aside, probably the only game worth belonging here is the iOS-exclusive ''Happy Tree Friends: Deadeye Derby'', an online one-on-one FPS game based on the episode "Camp Pokeneyeout". It makes use of the smartphone's features quite well (gyroscope and touch screen) and has fun gameplay, either against other players or bosses. Aside from gameplay, if you're a collector, you can win/earn actual HTF merchandise from this game (obviously, it needs to be shipped). It also has one feature rarely implemented on other games of this type: You can also gain premium currency by exchanging the regular currency with the former!
* TheProblemWithLicensedGames: While most official (or officially-approved in the case of the games in htfgames.com) HTF games tend to be SoOkayItsAverage due to being plain arcade games or just one of those "generic" Flash games, the absolute low point when it comes to the games is probably ''Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm'' for the Xbox and PC. Before the smartphone games, it was the only major release (the older mobile games are rather obscure), and it's the only one to be released for a console, at that. Graphically, it stays true to the show... but perhaps too much. The mostly-solid bright colors look unpleasant, the Happy Tree Friends' 3D models look plain (what with the stiff, flat face whose expression only changes when he/she gets certain injuries), and the blood and gore graphics might as well not "gory"-looking at all. Gameplay-wise, it's just an uninspired VideoGame/{{Lemmings}} lookalike minus the behavior-changers (you can only either freeze, thaw out, scare off, or burn the Happy Tree Friends) but with more ArtificialStupidity. While every level has environment-based gimmicks and traps, they all still feel the same. Also, the game's rather short (at around 2 hours quickest), it doesn't make use of all HTF characters (not counting the episode that comes with the game and the Xbox achievements' pictures, only 8 out of 20 (Lammy and Mr. Pickels didn't exist yet) main characters are in-game) and [[BonusFeatureFailure the special episode it promises is already readily-watchable on YouTube]], '''FULL''' episode.
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Disco Bear, specifically during the TV series. He went from being the annoying CasanovaWannabe to a more layered character. In "Change of Heart", he's shown to be an unhealthy eater, in "Ipso Fatso", he attempts to lose weight by exercising (with minimal success) and "Easy Come, Easy Go" implies that he might suffer from low self-esteem. This has made him go from being the most unliked character into being one of the most interesting and well-liked.
* RootingForTheEmpire: Often for Flippy. The most notable case being "By the Seat of Your Pants", where many viewers were against Lumpy for killing Flippy in an act of self-defense.
** A good number of people root for Sniffles to win against the Ants (especially in "Suck it Up" where they start the conflict by messing with Sniffles and getting off scot-free and "Tongue in Cheek" where they mercilessly torture him).
** Lifty & Shifty, but to a much lesser extent than the above.
* TheScrappy:
** Some veteran fans of the show see Lammy as a Scrappy because of her having a dark murderous side brought on by mental illness, something that's already been done with Flippy, making seem like the creators are trying to make that brand of psychopathic lightning that made Flippy so popular strike twice. Some rumors have started that [[WildMassGuessing Flippy is in fact cured (as evidenced by the fact he hasn't flipped out in years)]] - or, since ''On My Mind'', getting better - meaning Lammy could be another [[ReplacementScrappy kind of Scrappy]] altogether.
** Not a lot of people like the Ants due to their sadistic and [[DisproportionateRetribution disproportionate]] torture against Sniffles just because he wants to eat what's part of his diet. Doesn't help that they always get off [[KarmaHoudini scot-free]].
** Cro-Marmot isn't well-liked due to his, well, uselessness (being trapped in an ice block will do that to you). And, according to the HTF wiki, not even the staff like him.
** Giggles also has her fair share of hate, mostly due to dating different characters in multiple episodes.
* {{Squick}}
* TastesLikeDiabetes: This show has been parodying this trope before it was even cool.
* TearJerker: [[TearJerker/HappyTreeFriends Read here]].
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Truffles, especially to those who aren't fond of Lammy winning ''Vote or Die''.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Some fans feel this way about "A Vicious Cycle" for apparently scrapping another Flippy episode in favour of a possessed object.
* TrueNeutral: Flippy; considering that his two personalities are polar opposites (one is LawfulGood and the other is ChaoticEvil), they cancel out into this.
* UglyCute: Lumpy and Truffles.
* UnintentionallySympathetic: If you couldn't tell from the other entries, Sniffles in episodes where he's against the Ants.
** Lifty & Shifty can sometimes come across as this.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Splendid, particularly in "Gems the Breaks", where he intentionally kills the Mole and dries up a lake while pursuing Lifty and Shifty, who cause no harm other than tying up Giggles and Petunia. Another example being "Breaking Wind", where he chooses the pages of his book over others' lives, and then throws away the last page after destroying the planet to get them.
** The Ants. The viewer is suppose to feel bad for them because Sniffles tries to eat them. But how can we possibly feel sorry for them when they torture Sniffles in ways that not even Evil!Flippy (the closest thing the series has to a main antagonist - excluding Lifty & Shifty) would put his victims through?
** Lumpy and Pop can count as well. Despite their good intentions, their incompetence has caused a lot more harm than it's done good.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: Is Flaky a boy or girl? Fans and creators usually go with girl. Although Graff sometimes {{troll}}s the fanbase regarding Flaky's gender because he likes seeing fans fight over it.
** Played for laughs in the episode ''Something Fishy'', where Flaky's shown trying to decide which bathroom to go in. We never do find out the answer. Although it's not really much of a mystery anymore since the creator has already stated a few times that she's a girl.
** Was confirmed to be a girl by the website's Twitter account on April 28, 2012.
** Cuddles often gets confused for a girl. It does not help that he has a high-pitched voice, wears pink bunny slippers, and is a light pastel yellow color. In episodes where he and Giggles are dating, YouTube commenters are shocked to discover Cuddles' true gender.
* TheWoobie: Depending on your tastes, everyone.
** Flaky, who - unlike her sometimes blissfully unaware friends - responds with the appropriate amount of fear to the messes she ends up in.
** Toothy for his tendency to cry easily.
** Sniffles (see JerkassWoobie) and Petunia for their often exceptionally [[CruelAndUnusualDeath brutal and prolonged deaths]].
** The non-AxCrazy side of Flippy goes into this territory when he realizes that he's brutally killed his own friends in ''Double Whammy Part I''. He gets more and more traumatized after every flip-out, and ends up cuddling a teddy bear while in a TroubledFetalPosition after the third one.
* WhatAnIdiot: [[WhatAnIdiot/HappyTreeFriends Has its own page]].
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: The videos start out fine... until the middle bordering on end.
