YMMV / Hand of Thrawn

  • Author's Saving Throw: Many fans of the Expanded Universe felt The Hand of Thrawn was this for the entire Expanded Universe to that point, as Zahn went out of his way to address many of the largest complaints about the franchise.
  • Crowning Moment of Funny: The opening line of chapter 6 of Spectre of the Past:
She was short, she was furry, she was loud, and she was determined to sell him a melon.
    • Shada's dogged pursuit of trying to get information out of Talon Karrde:
Karrde: He's someone who used to be in the same business I am. Probably still is, actually.
      Shada: But not a competitor?
Karrde: You were certainly paying attention in there. Incidentally, just out of curiosity, where in the bedroom were you hiding? I didn't notice any place where anyone bigger than a Noghri could have been tucked away.
Shada: I was on the floor, between the back bed and the wall. A gap like that always looks smaller than it really is. If Car'das wasn't a competitor, what was he?
Karrde: Persistent, too. I like that in my people.
Shada: Delighted to hear it. If he wasn't a competitor, what was he?
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: As is mentioned elsewhere, the image on Vision of the Future's cover can't be Thrawn, because his species' eyes are monochromatic red. Fast-forward to the new design for Chiss eyes in Rebels.
  • Ho Yay: Thrawn means a lot to Pellaeon. A lot. Pellaeon doesn't take the news that Thrawn may have returned without talking to him very well, and speculates morosely as to why.
"Thrawn wasn't human, you know, no matter how human he might have looked. He was an alien, with alien thoughts and purposes and agendas. Perhaps I was never more to him than just one more tool he could use in reaching his goal."
