YMMV / Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

Go To

  • Designated Hero: The humans could've avoided the plot of the film if they didn't take Baby Godzilla which drives Godzilla and Rodan to go get him, so a lot of the destruction that happened was from their own doing. Not to mention they thought it was a good idea to use Baby Godzilla as bait to lure in Godzilla to kill him which caused Miki to be appalled and start caring about Godzilla later on.note
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Ohrai Noriyoshi's design for Mechagodzilla on one of the posters. So much so that it was made into a real toy. By extension, Naga, Gundalva & Garuda qualify as dark horses too. It was also the design used as the basis for Mechagodzilla in the film Ready Player One.
    • Dr. Azusa Gojo is also one of the few Heisei continuity human characters fans tend to remember besides Miki. Dr. Nick Tatopoulos clearly echoing her for the animated series helped.
  • Fan Nickname: The Airplane Toilet for Mechagodzilla, which was how one disgruntled fan described the Mecha after being disappointed that it won in an online monster tournament.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Azusa's speculation that a new dinosaur age will come actually makes a lot of sense in this universe. Professor Mazaki in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah even theorizes that dinosaurs still live in the modern day in undiscovered pockets of the world. Two Godzillasaurus individuals have been found alive within 50 years, the Godzillasaurus in 1945 and Baby Godzilla in 1993, the latter being alongside a dead Pteranodon skeleton and Rodan, a mutated Pteranodon. Speculating that the dinosaurs could retake the world in a few million years seems like a real possibility, especially when they're turning into radioactive monsters.
  • Narm: as is traditional for the Heisei films, the delivery for most of the English language dialogue in this movie is hilarious. Special mention must be made of Shelley Sweeney's very Shatner-esque reading of the line "Yeah, LIFE against...artificial...life" during what's meant to be a very meaningful moment.
  • So Bad, It Was Better: From this film on, the dubbing became boring as most of the hammier, overly enthusiastic dubbers from the older films disappeared, though Rik Thomas remained. Oddly, the existence of an older, unused traditional HK dub has been proven
  • Special Effects Failure: While most of the effects in the film are quite good, the RadoGoji suit has some very odd proportions when viewed from any angle other than the front or the back.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: The film is often seen as a more engaging film story and character wise compared to Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth.
  • Ugly Cute: BabyGodzilla, though some might argue he's just plain cute.
