  • Awesome Levels: All of the "Sur-" stages in Galaxies. No extra lives, no bombs, just pure, kill-or-be-killed gameplay.
  • Awesome Music: The original Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved theme. composed by AudioAntics, this theme will pump you up for your adrenaline filled game.
    • And then it gets an absolute AWESOME remix in 2! Composed by AudioAntics again, it builds up for the first 30 seconds, and then BAM! You can feel the beat coursing through your veins as you try to kill as many enemies as you can!
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Weavers are swift green shapes that can dodge your bullets. They're hard to kill and can fairly easily catch up to you while you try.
    • Repulsors charge towards you and are protected on the front. Though they aren't very agile, they're extremely dangerous if you're paying attention to something else or panicking.
    • Snakes are invulnerable except for their head segment. When large packs of them start spawning, they can interweave between each other, protecting themselves as well as the other shapes as they converge on your position.
  • Game-Breaker: For those who competed on the total score rankings for the now-defunct online leaderboards for Galaxies, Min- stages. Due to their Pinball Scoring mechanics, Min- stages are so hideously overpowered that scores on all other stages, with the exception of one Var- stage with Min- elements, are absolutely pointless.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: Due to how Min- stages have disproportionately higher scores than other stages, some players will make files where they don't play Min- stages at all so that their total scores don't end up skewing towards these sorts of stages.
  • That One Achievement:
    • One of the achievements in the 360 version of Retro Evolved is getting to 1,000,000 points without dying once. Yeah. Have fun.
    • Retro Evolved 2 has Smile. To earn this achievement, you have to time out in certain stages and die on others, so the results screen looks like a smiley face. Surviving the rest on your limited resources can be pretty tough.
  • That One Boss: Topaz in 3 starts out alright, but the large deadly walls in its last three phases combined with the spawn patterns of enemies render it the game's most difficult boss by a long shot.
  • That One Level: "Orb-" (Orbit) stages in Galaxies are exceptionally annoying. A vortex in the center creates a current that sends you and enemies spinning around it at high speeds. It's quite easy for a wayward enemy to slam into you while you're just trying to struggle against the current.
  • This Is Your Premise on Drugs: Magazine ads frequently touted this game as "Asteroids on steroids"
IGN: The biggest problem at the IGN office with Geometry Wars Retro Evolved ... is agreeing on just how addictive this little arcade space shooter is. We've decided to label it "Asteroids on Speed," and we'll leave it at that.
