YMMV / GameChap

  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
  • Audience-Alienating Era: Gamechap and Bertie were popular for their Quintessential British Gentleman commentary while also focusing on various Game Mods and gaming news, interjected with comedic skits and the like. But ever since being Overshadowed by Controversy and losing many viewers, the AdamzoneTopMarks channel has never been the same. The chaps signature commentary being phased out in favor of ninety percent no-commentary videos, including of back-to-back Super Mario Maker/Miitopia playthroughs, re-uploads of popular game trailers, topics that are cheap attempts at Fanservice and Fetish appeal (tame enough to avoid the YouTube AI), and other low-effort content has left the channel's viewership fluctuating downward from then on. Any returns to the classic format has been few and far between, with Gamechap and Bertie — the source of the channels appeal — being completely absent.
  • Broken Base:
    • Less noticeable, but there are occasionally comments from people that miss the early dynamic of Bertie being the Only Sane Man, with Gamechap as the Cloud Cuckoolander. These comments in turn receive replies indicating the opposite for others.
    • New channel TheChapsPlay (link here) is either a refreshing return to their roots or a deviation from their Smash Bros coverage, which had started to win fans back. There are also fans that like the content but would prefer it to be on the main channel, where it would get more coverage.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • The duo were this for Yogscast fans even before they joined, given how erratically funny they were in the crossover videos. A good dose of Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass helped this no end, particularly in Crown Conquest.
    • Squiddington himself, owing to his Character Exaggeration over the years.
  • Fandom Rivalry:
    • While initially the duo got on well with the Yogscast and their fandoms did likewise, their eventually rude response to a bit of fan criticism got them kicked out of the Yogscast. Since then, mention one group on the other's forum and you will be met with scorn (or a ban, if you post on Gamechap's). Hat Films and Lewis Brindley in particular have been more vocal with criticism, leading to another rivalry.
    • While initially somewhat popular with the Minecraft community even after they’re falling out with the Yogscast, this is no longer the case. This is partly due to Gamechap's starting a Twitter war with Marc Watson of Mojang over 500,000 accounts initially being hacked (when in reality that was not the case) and then not crediting an animator for his work on the bunny hopping animation.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • At one point, Gamechap and Bertie made a video regarding Pixelmon which revealed some malicious programming on the part of the mod team, and how they had been subsequently silenced. Come later in 2014, there is a Reddit post about a rather major scandal involving Gamechap's supposed stealing of fan-submitted content and his subsequent silencing of any criticism directed towards him and his past history of doing so. This was enough for large numbers of fans to disown Gamechap altogether.
    • Furthermore, when a leak for Super Smash Bros. 4 was revealed to have data regarding Ryu and Roy (From Street Fighter and Fire Emblem) returning as DLC, they reported on the information, even though it was not theirs to take and put on the internet. Then, when Nintendo decided to take the video down, they quickly produced a video which amounted to them talking about Nintendo taking down a video which was of information the company wished to keep secret, and a decision which is wholly logical on Nintendo's part. However, this did also happen to several other big-name Youtubers who appeared in the comment section of that video.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Herobrine, as usual. Also, the Nightmare Golem.
    • Herobrine gets MUCH scarier in the 1.3 vid about HIM being removed. At first, it looks like it's just gonna be an ordinary hilarious video about them thinking he's gone, when he's not. Then it switches to HIS point of view; all the sound is echoey, he's breathing hard, and he promptly builds a glow stone E. Then, he starts placing redstone torches. WHILE LETTING OUT A HORRENDOUS SCREAM. Then Game's door opens by itself. The music certainly doesn't help either...
  • Memetic Badass: Bertie, at least when it comes to blowing things up.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Anything in this video gets quoted in the comments of that video.
    • "Boobs, lol"
    • "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!"
  • The Scrappy: Even before they joined Yogscast, the pair were considered this among that fanbase due to several battle royale type events they participated in and essentially shouted over whoever they got paired with the whole time.
  • Win Back the Crowd: While the whole Yogscast and Pixelmon debacles were generally agreed to be a serious drop in quality which drove many fans away for good, they appear to have won over a new audience with their Super Smash Bros. content.
