* WhatTheHellCastingAgency: Given that Asian and Asian-American actors are less prominent in Hollywood, a considerable number of Asian-American viewers were disappointed that Universal played the ButNotTooForeign trope straight by casting Keanu Reeves as Kai.

The Shogun's order to kill him was not a gratuitous cruelty, but ''the rule of law''. And Lord Asano begs forgiveness admitting his own guilt and shaming himself. [[AndroclesLion This will prove useful for the avengers in the future]], but at that moment it was an extraordinary favor, coming from a Daimyo as it did.

* AwesomeMusic: The score by Illan Esherki was one of the few things people liked about the movie.

* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Even people who don't like the film have admitted that the visuals are impressive and probably the only thing well used in the 200 million dollar budget. Special mention goes to the Tengu monks and the Kirin at the films beginning.

* HateDumb: Before it even came out, the movie took a lot of flak largely for starring Creator/KeanuReeves. Implications of his acting talent aside, the biggest complaint is that he can't realistically play a half-Asian character, despite actually being of mixed-Asian descent.

* UnfortunateImplications: One of the most blatant cases of MightyWhitey in recent memory, as apparently having the Ronin all be 100% Asian would completely kill any desire to see it. This is toned down a little by Keanu Reeves actually having some Asian heritage, but it still rankles.

* CriticalResearchFailure: The first monster the characters fight is a Kirin. This flat-out contradicts Japanese mythology's interpretation of them being divine creatures that appear with the imminent arrival or passing of a sage or illustrious ruler. They are also seen as good omens to occasion prosperity or serenity, not as beasts that would threaten people.
** The timing is right because of the Shogun's imminent arrival, and Kai does say there's something wrong with it. Unfortunately the latter part comes after the Samurai are already hunting it.
** The timing for it being "not right" makes sense as well since we see Mizuki out there watching. And when she reports in the first thing said to her asks about the old man being dead, ostensibly killed by the Mizuki enraged Kirin.
