YMMV / Ernest et Célestine

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: The animated film seems to be more well-known than the children's books.
  • Adorkable: Ernest might as well be Celestine's kindhearted Bumbling Dad surrogate.
  • Award Snub: It was nominated at the 2013 Academy Awards for "Best Animated Feature"....but it sadly lost to Frozen (2013).
  • Awesome Art: It wasn't nominated for "Best Animated Feature" for no reason, we can tell you that! Did we mention that it was made in Flash?
    • The backgrounds, especially in the mouse world, are jaw-dropping.
    • The abstract sequence when Ernest plays the violin and transitions the story from winter to spring.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Ernest reveals that he left his home so that he could pursue the career as a musician instead of becoming a judge as pressured by his father. Then comes the sequel A Trip to Gibberitia, where Ernest and Celestine return to the former's home country of Gibberitia to fix his broken violin, and learn that Ernest running away caused his judge father to pass the Ernestov law (named after Ernest's Gibberitian birth name) that bans all musical notes except one and decrees that children must accept the career choice from their parents - turning a country that once had a strong musical tradition into a dystopian society devoid of culture. Because of that, many musicians in Gibberitia who has gone underground blame and resent Ernest for causing their sudden hardship. Even worse for Ernest, his action has caused his parents to separate.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Or in this case, Americans love Ernest and Celestine; it was nominated for "Best Animated Feature" at the 2013 Academy Awards.
  • Moe:
    • Celestine, Celestine, Celestine....
    • You gotta admit that the Candy Shop owner's son is also pretty adorable, too.
    • Ernest may be an older example when it comes to age, but he's pretty Adorkable!
  • Strawman Has a Point: The Judges (and by extension Ernest and Celestine's respective fellow mice and bears) might have been biased against the title characters, but you can understand their anger since both of them has caused a majority of crimes.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: It's a story of an unlikely friendship between a gruff bear with a heart of gold and a plucky little mouse, with soft, pastel visuals and a happy ending. This movie is sweet dreams incarnate.
  • The Woobie: It's safe to say that both of the main characters are this; Nobody approves of their true ambitions, Ernest is hungry and poor while Celestine's beliefs are shot down by the people of the orphanage and has a hard time finding teeth for the dentists in her Mouse World.
