YMMV / Econ Stories

  • Anvilicious: It doesn't take much more than a video or two to peg them as generally hardline libertarians.
  • Artistic License Economics: Despite the site siding with them mainstream economics largly discredits the Austrian school and it's considered highly heterodox among economists even today, with most mainstream conservatives tending towards the Chicago school (which has Keynesian influence too). Of course one could argue that they're also saying that nearly all mainstream economists are wrong too.
  • Critical Research Failure: Their video about The LEGO Movie seems to give the impression that the movie was pro capitalist and that Lord Business was a Soviet styled central planner because he happened to be the ruler. In reality, the Marxist criticism of capitalism alienating the creativity of workers due to profit coming first and the use of the state to back the system and oppress workers is closer to the movie's central ideal. The video falls back on the fallacy that socialism inherently means more government planning (never mind the existence of libertarian socialists and anarcho syndicalists).
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: How many of their videos come across to (most of) those who have actually studied economics. They act incredibly smug about their ideas despite most of their positions coming across as cranky (such as backing the gold standard). To put it another way either they're really genuises smarter than most economists or just cocky crackpots.
