* AudienceAlienatingPremise: Defied. People like TotalBiscuit questioned the marketability of a fighting game simplified down to just two buttons (implying a fighting game for fighting game newbies,) but loaded to the gills with references to the FightingGameCommunity that few outside of it would get. Despite this, it still proved popular with the FGC anyway.
* AwesomeMusic: Dive Bar, JEO Main Stage, and New Angle Dojo. And especially Downworld. It's a shame the music is pretty quiet during matches.
* DeaderThanDisco: Between 2012 and 2014, Divekick was pretty much ''everywhere''. Most major tournaments had it featured, an enthusiastic community had arisen, and lots of people (both part of the FGC and not) were interested. Then it came out, and its popularity exploded...for a couple of months. After its release, lots of people started to notice the flaws with the game (such as the fact that some characters were {{Game Breaker}}s and people got tired of losing to the same exploited tactics over and over. Afterwards, Keits revealed the "Addition Edition"...a move which ''pleased no one'' because both people who did and didn't play the game felt it was hypocritical that the parody game which began as a mockery of how fighting games (and gamers) take things too seriously was now taking itself seriously. Specifically, the idea of "editions" was mocked in the original trailer of the game, and now here it was doing the same thing.
* MexicansLoveSpeedyGonzales: The fighting game community loves Divekick, largely for the down-to-the-essentials feel of it.
* PeripheryDemographic: It was designed as a parody of competitive fighting games. That said, it's also popular among competitive fighting game players due to being what a fighting game is meant to be (TabletopGame/{{chess}} with reflexes) without the need to learn enormous combos to even be decent.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: Adding further to shout-out parallels between Kick and ''Series/TheFreshPrinceOfBelAir'' is an entire stage filled with them. It's a basketball court, and the music that plays is an almost-but-not-quite a version of the show's famed intro song.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: As of late, there has been a growing Hatedom for the game, saying that it has become a joke that now takes itself too seriously. People have also said that this game would have been better if it were just Dive and Kick.
** One of the loading screen tips lampshades this fact.
-->''"I liked this game better when Dive and Kick were the only two characters."''
** The drastic changes made to The Baz and S-Kill in ''Addition Edition'' were...controversial to say the least.
