Iron Woobie: Zero goes through oh so much abuse in battle and comes close to death many times.
Jerkass Woobie: Sigma and Hideto. You can't help but feel sorry for these two guys after you learn why they do what they do. Mari too...if the implications of her previous line of work is to be believed, then it's no wonder she turned to what she saw as a better position in life.
Neo Saiba, on the other hand, averts this by basically catapulting himself over the Moral Event Horizon from his first appearance onward. By the time you learn about his real intentions, you're just about ready to pound him into a bloody pulp anyway. It doesn't help that he came off as an arrogant prick, even back then.
