YMMV / Delta Force: Black Hawk Down

Go To

  • Broken Base: The change to fast gameplay and semi-linear levels led to a divide in the base with the classic fans frustrated with the final product but was loved (or at least liked) by newcomers.
  • Critical Dissonance: While most gaming sites gave the game fives and sixes, most people that played the game remember it fondly for its multiplayer mode and fast gameplay.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • The RPG-equipped soldiers during ground missions, as they mostly spawn on roofs or alongside other soldiers and the game expects you to kill them before they fire their first shot or you are dead.
    • The stationary machine gunners become this if you don't use the map to spot their positions or they will surprise you and kill you in a second.
  • Difficulty Spike:
    • The endgame missions comprising the Battle of Mogadishu are a significant step up in difficulty compared to the early-to-midgame missions. Mogadishu Mile, the final normal mission, is particularly tough with no health or ammo refills until the very end, a long gauntlet of snipers and RPG militia (who are much more accurate than they were in the rest of the game), with an Escort Mission at the beginning and end.
    • The expansion is known for this as all of its missions last from 15 to 30 minutes, the enemy placement is less forgiving and you're never allowed more than five saves.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Two of your squadmates are named Mother and Preacher.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: The mission editor, while appreciated, was primitive even by 2004 standards and complex to use.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Even by its time, it was considered this by FPS fans.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Before and after its release, many reviewers and players agreed that the game was going to be and turned BETTER than the last two games Land Warrior and Task Force Dagger.
  • That One Level: Attempted Arrest in Team Sabre, simply put, the mission is a buggy mess, with the time limit to rescue the pilot never being the same length twice, sometimes you'll get more than enough time, othertimes you can barely leave the village before he's killed, the recommended strategy is to exploit a section in the mission where most of the "you have left the mission zone" scripting is turned off (Just before picking up the documents to trigger the helicopter.) and run ahead to kill most of the enemies so you can just run through that section with the knife out to run faster and save time. (You can even have the mission fail to spawn the helicopter in the first place, softlocking you after picking up the documents.)
