YMMV / Dead Fantasy

Go To

  • Awesomeness Withdrawal: It has been said that the only remotely bad thing about the series is the wait between episodes, which just keep getting longer and longer as the series gets... uh, awesomer and awesomer. However, Monty's tragic death means that the awesomeness has definitely ended.
  • Broken Base: DOA fans vs. FF fans. It gets nasty. Trust us on this. Nevermind that Monty repeatedly said it was never about who wins or loses, or who was better.
    • Episode 3 was the biggest sore point of the divide, as it was the fight that came closest to having a definitive conclusion, by having Hitomi curbstomp Tifa with her own Materia.
    • Perhaps the most divisive issue is the fact Monty took Artistic License with several characters, by endowing them with powers and abilities they don't possess in their respective canons - with Rinoa, Hitomi, the Kasumi X clones, and Kairi being the worst offenders.
      • Some fans are fine with it and simply chalk it up to Monty either invoking Rule of Cool, or feel he's trying to balance things out by making the presence of those characters feasible.
      • Purists, on the other hand, feel he's simply making those characters more powerful than they should be, to help them fight characters they'd otherwise stand no chance against. While other characters are being misrepresented.
    • The outcome of Dead Fantasy III was hotly debated (and continues to be, years later).
      • The main bulk of the issue is/was: was it a victory for Hitomi? DOA fans feel it goes without saying, given she literally beat the materia out of Tifa and used them to turn the tables on her. Whereas FF fans point out the fact that Tifa was conscious and still able to fight (despite her injuries), as evidenced by her performance in part V.
      • The other part of the problem lies in the fact that the fight was interrupted by Hayate. DOA fans feel it doesn't matter, since part V marked the beginning of a new episode; regardless of the fact that it takes place only moments after part III. The FF side feels it does matter, since the match was still in progress.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • Rinoa's godlike power in Episode II. It actually makes sense, as in-game her Angel Wing limit really does amp up her magical power to absurd levels.
    • The Kasumi X clones' teleportation in part 4, which enabled them to make mincemeat of Yuna's Aeon's in virtually no time flat.
    • Kairi's transformation into Namine, who may as well be Nu-13 instead, and all the powers that come with it (see the Super Mode entry on her character sheet).
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The series involves Final Fantasy characters fighting characters owned by Team Ninja. Fast forward to 2015, and Team Ninja is developing a Final Fantasy fighting game.
    • One for fans of Sentinels of the Multiverse: Tifa is losing to the ninjas due to their sheer numbers until she gets the jack handle, which lets her easily strike multiple enemies at once. Mr. Fixer's card the jack handle makes it so his strikes hit every enemy target, very good for taking down large amounts of small enemies.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: Garage Jack vs Ninjas. Twang!
