• Spiritual Successor: 25 years later, HBO released Chernobyl, another international production about a Ignored Expert having to solve a crisis while dealing with government denialism in The '80s USSR. Chernobyl's creator Craig Mazin also cited Citizen X as an inspiration when deciding to not use Fake Russian accents, which the movie does.
• Stoic Woobie: The young cop at the rural train station who failed to spot Chikatilo returning from the forest; Burakov initially chews him out but then asks the cop how long he's been on duty without a break. It turns out to have been days.
• The Woobie: Burakov, who despite being generally stoical, cries more than once.
