YMMV / Bill Nye the Science Guy

  • Big Lipped Alligator Moments: The song parodies.
  • Critical Research Failure: One episode mentioned that it's true that storing batteries in a refrigerator increases their longevity.note
  • Ear Worm: The show's opening song.
    • "Bill Nye The Science Guy! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL!"
      • "Science rules."
      • "Inertia is a property of matter!"
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The fake ad for water sold in bottles as a sports drink. At the time, it was funny to imagine that anyone would do that. Now it's hilarious that they actually do — and it's a massive cash cow.
    • In the episode about gravity, Bill stands outside a movie theater that is ostensibly playing a film called "Gravity" (and there's silent film parody of people being affected by it). Come 2013...
    • The running gag in the "Dinosaurs" episode where they show old movie footage of dinosaurs and humans interacting to remind people that that NEVER happened with dinosaurs that aren't birds. As it turns out, Bill takes this quite seriously as he's recently made it his life's work to completely obliterate the theory of creationism (which claims the exact opposite).
    • One Season 4 episode is a countdown of his Top 11 best music videos — particularly amusing to Doug Walker fans, who made such countdowns part of his Signature Style. Why Top 11? In Bill's case, "Because it's a prime number."
  • Just Here for Godzilla: A lot of youngsters just tuned in for the entertaining skits, songs and wacky presentation, without much concern for the science being to blatantly taught to them. Further proof that this is one of the greatest examples of edutainment.
    • Adult Seattle residents watched this to see the Almost Live! cast members, as KING had cancelled the series at that point.
  • Memetic Badass: Bill Nye.
  • Memetic Mutation: Bill Nye the doubles guy!
  • Retroactive Recognition: The show's narrator, Pat Cashman, is better known as the announcer for Super Smash Bros. Brawl as well as the voice of Master Hand and Crazy Hand in that game.
  • Sacred Cow: Similar to Mr. Rogers, Bill Nye is one of the most beloved people around, especially on the internet. His recent staunch activism against anti-science groups has elevated him to near god-like status. Unfortunately, the premiere of Bill Nye Saves the World and some of the controversial topics it presented may have eroded this status quite a bit...
  • Unacceptable Targets: Going hand in hand with Sacred Cow above, ribbing the show and/or Bill himself rarely ended well. Nowadays he's lost this status among certain circles, but he is still highly regarded in a lot of places and it's best not to bring up the subject.
