YMMV / Broforce

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Deon Van Heerden has put together a badass soundtrack that would not be out of place in an epic action flick, with such gems as "This Ends Now", "End of the Line", "Liberty or Death", "An Unbreakable Force", "Alpha Xenomorph" and especially "No Sympathy for the Devil".
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The suicide mook cutscene. It comes out of nowhere, bears no relevance to the (admittedly thin) plot, and is never referenced again. It is hilarious, though.
  • Demonic Spiders: The attack dogs! Not only can they smell you from a long distance, but they will always charge your position in the worst way possible. And to make matters worse, they can eat dead enemies and allies to become even bigger and more durable!
    • And then there are the xenomorphs who are bigger, faster, agile and stronger than the dogs in every way.
    • Hellhounds. Found obviously in Hell, they are almost the exact same thing as the standard attack dog... But a if a single hellhound manages to eat a corpse, it can spawn a whole pack of their kind. If you don't dispose of them fast, prepare to be Zerg Rush'd.
    • Don't even get us started on the Buzzsaw Traps, who fire massive bouncing saws at you at high speed. These things will turn almost everything into piles of rubble and gore and they will almost always be placed in very tight and dangerous spots.
    • In hell, there are flying skulls reminiscent of Lost Souls from Doom. They fly, they are fast, they explode, they charge at you relentlessly, and come in large numbers. You're better off running for cover than trying to fight them.
  • Ending Fatigue: The final level of the full game, Hell, is as long as 3 to 4 regular levels combined, with multiple boss and final boss fights. For people who played the beta, it's probably a large, welcome amount of new content. But for new players playing the full game from beginning to end, it may seem like the final level is abnormally long for no particular reason.
  • Game-Breaker: The Brominator can utterly bulldoze most bosses. Just get him into firing position, turn on his invincibility, and watch their health bar just disappear.
    • Brode can absolutely rip through levels at lightning speed thanks to his powerful dash moves and spammable sword swipes. He can also tear through certain bosses, and his high mobility means he can survive a lot longer than his melee counterparts.
  • Game-Breaking Bug: In the PS4 version, there's a glitch which makes your Bro stop doing anything sometime after you spawn for 2 seconds. In some levels, no big deal once you compensate. In levels like escaping the Deathfield... good luck. Thankfully, this has been fixed.
    • In all versions, if you destroy the entire pillar below the Heart of the Hive and it falls offscreen, it doesn’t count as the heart being destroyed, so you’re going to have to restart.
  • Goddamned Bats:
    • The Riot Shield Mooks. They are unarmed and they pose no threat whatsoever when found on their lonesome, but their shields are almost impervious to bullets, so any enemy located behind them will be able to shoot you with impunity unless you take them out or maneuver around them.
    • The Scout mooks. They're unarmed, but will run around alerting all other nearby enemies of your presence. They also activate any alarms they encounter, which keep summoning reinforcements until deactivated or destroyed.
    • Mook Generals. Much like Scout Mooks, they have no weapons, but if they're alerted to your presence, they'll call for reinforcements non-stop until they're killed.
  • Good Bad Bugs: There are pigs in certain levels that serve little purpose other than being cannon fodder. A bug, however, allows the player to ride a pig through the air by standing on it and knifing it repeatedly. The devs liked the bug and left it in. This is even given a nod in the ending, as one of the bros escapes the explosion emanating from Super Satan by riding away on a pig.
    • If a character dies via spikes and is resurrected using Broniversal Soldier's special, they will gain infinite jumps, leading to entire levels being skippable by flying over them.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Broden's inclusion, in light of how many other action stars spoofed by this game would later appear in Mortal Kombat as Guest Fighters.
  • I Am Not Shazam: A few Bros are named after the movies they appeared in, like Bro Hard and Brommando.
  • Low-Tier Letdown: When Cherry Broling was first introduced she was widely considered the worst character in the game. She was awkward to move around and could only shoot downwards, which, while gives her a ton of height, also had it's own difficulty in controlling her trajectory. Even with her ability to shoot forward later added as well as shooting fast, Cherry is limited by her slow speed (she has to hobble around) and her whole shtick of raining Death from Above ultimately limits her in the levels where you need to go really fast or are stuck in tight caves. Outside of those situations, she performs rather well, and could be considered Rescued from the Scrappy Heap.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: Dirty Brorry's .44 Magnum makes a very satisfying sound when fired. Which makes sense, as it's the exact sound used in the films for Harry's Magnum.
  • Narm: Many players will crack up when those Binocular mooks run around spouting "DERKA!"Note
    • Bro Heart. "FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM!!"
  • Porting Disaster: The PS4 port often runs around 20-25 fps, sometimes dipping into the tens. Combined with the above-mentioned bug, it's safe to say that the PS4 version isn't exactly "polished."
  • Scrappy Mechanic: The Character Select Forcing that occurs every time you save a bro makes the game a lot more difficult than it should be. A lot of the later bros are specialists who only work in specific environments compared to the early games' more generalist bros. This means you can be playing a bro great for the situation and be forced to switch off of them in order to gain an extra life, which you need in a game as tough as this.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: The game is already Nintendo Hard as is, but if you want to make it even more challenging, you can try and complete the campaign or custom maps WITHOUT rescuing POWs. This way, you'll only have one life and will have to adapt to whichever character the game gives you.
    • If you want to push this up to eleven, you can try this in Ironbro mode. No, you won't complete the game with only one life/character unless you are some kind of Broforce God, but it's fun to try and see how far you can get.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: It's a better Expendables game than the actual Expendables game.
    • No Problem with Licensed Games: The tie in game Expendabros shows what a nigh-perfect mix this is; the only way it can get better is if it had one-liners.
    • And the Alien stages are the best Contra recreation.
    • Whenever you're playing as Indiana Brones, you're pretty much playing Spelunky. Bonus points for the four Muscle Temples added in Forever being close to them.
    • This game also may or may not be a video game adaptation of Megaforce. Seriously, read the movie's description on this site and see how similar it is to this game's summary. To top it off, the title "Broforce" does sound like the movie's title being run through this game's naming filter.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The level end theme sounds quite similar to Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers' opening theme (specifically, the second verse of the intro riff).
  • Tear Jerker: Subjective, of course, but the ending where the President is killed is surprisingly effective. The crowd reacts in shock, the bros go to jail, and the music even takes a dark turn. Plus, the visuals imply Rambro only did this due to PTSD; understandable given the events of the game.
  • That One Boss: The Megacockter became this in the Broforce Forever update, as, in the new redone version of its stage, the game got rid of all the hostages, forcing you to destroy it with just one life.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The inclusion of a boss based on GR-13 makes one wonder why they didn’t make bosses based on the antagonists of the other movies the Bros were based on.
