YMMV / Aura of the Azure

  • Crossover Shipping: Given the nature of this fic, there is a few examples of this.
    • Jaune and Noel were predicted by viewers and proven right during the Dance. While other viewers might have been upset or angry that it wasn't the traditional Jaune and Pyrrha setup, trvn actually took time to build up their relationship and make it feel natural and fluid.
    • Yang and Ragna is one that viewers have theorized will be the case when trvn confirmed he was going to pair Ragna with someone. Both characters have great chemistry within the story, both are the first one each other meets when arriving at Beacon and both trust each other enough to reveal their tragic pasts and mistakes. Given the events of Chapter 54 however, it's possible that this won't happened and even if it does, it will take a very long time given that Yang no doubt probably hates Ragna right now. The ship has no doubt crashed and burned due to how Makoto and Yang have now hooked up.
  • I Knew It!: The reviews predicted and hoped that Jaune and Noel would end up together.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Jin's a cold, aloof asshole, but with how much of a Big Brother Bully Ragna was when they were kids, being derided for his weak crybaby personality, and the elder sibling he idolized showing no sympathy to him after he was almost killed, why else would he turn out the way he did? He then finds out his brother provoked a bunch of criminals who are threatening his family's lives and now agrees to help his brother despite their grudge. Then things go downhill when he arrives too late, sees his brother go berserk and has to then fight him in order to protect the lives of everyone at the stadium.
    • Ragna's more than a bit of a jackass who feels horrible about what he did to his brother, but knows that nothing he can do will ever take it back. Then everything goes completely downhill for him when he tries to confront Cinder. He has his family's life threatened, finds out that Ozpin has been lying to him and the public, and then Terumi and Cinder completely ruin his life by making him go berserk and attack and kill innocent, all while he is aware and incapable of stopping his actions, which leads to him killing Penny, being branded as The Antichrist by everyone, and now appears to be slowly losing his friends' trust. It's no wonder people think he'll descend into becoming the cynical and violent "Grim Reaper" from canon.
    • Nu, of the Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds variety thanks to the horrible experiments done to her by the Murakumo labs. The scientists who experimented on her ignored her pleads of help in pursuit of harnessing her power, then when alone has vision of Ragna who she becomes convinced will save her from the scientists. It gets to the point where she is driven mad by the experiments and now wants to destroy the world for making her suffer. When Ragna finally sees all of her memories, he immediately stops fighting her and tries to help her before Cinder arrives.
    • Yang, originally qualifying as just a Woobie, has promoted to this. While it's true that she has abandonment issues, feels betrayed by Ragna and lost her arm to Nu, it doesn't help that Yang is clearly descending into darkness and has become so damaged by what Ragna did that she may or may not ever truly recover for a long time.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Terumi finally crosses this line and shows us he's now a player in the game by making Ragna go berserk and attack innocent civilians and his friends as part of his and Cinder's plan to frame Ragna for everything and turn the whole world against him. If that's not enough, in this story Ragna is the one that kills Penny, completely against his will, to which Ruby has a Heroic BSoD after activating her Silver Eyes for the first time....which are completely useless against this berserk Ragna. Not only is this version of the events at the Vytal Festival more dark than in canon, but also appears to set up Ragna possibly becoming "The Grim Reaper" that he known for in the games.
    • If threatening his family wasn't enough, Cinder using her broadcast to make the whole world believe Ragna is the Black Beast reborn fully solidifies how far she has gone with her heinousness. Because of this, Ragna is now public enemy number one and nearly everyone wants him dead.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: We are supposed to sympathize with Blake due to being a victim of racism by humans and that she clearly had a rough childhood, but the way she acts aggressive and venomous towards people who call out the White Fang's actions and tries to justify it shows that she can be just as bad. Her attitude towards their attempted investigation and Makoto's scolding is to whine and deflect the blame to others (Such as blaming the amount of people in their investigation despite the fact that they could have all died if Ragna, Jin and Jubei hadn't hold off Azrael as well as ignoring the fact that their actions led to collateral damage). Blake is also shown to be just as racist towards humans as they are to faunas, pointing out their crimes and mistakes but not her own species' wrongdoings. To further prove this point, Makoto is the perfect example of a faunas who was a victim of racism like Blake, but instead chose to befriend humans and give them the benefit of the doubt, never raising her fist against them and doesn't hide her heritage. While her talk with Makoto has made her think in a more positive manner, there is no evidence yet to suggest her views have changed. trvn has acknowledged this as a problem and that he intends to be more cautious in regards to writing for Blake in the future.
