YMMV / Attack on Titan (2015)

  • Complete Monster: Commander Kubal is the true identity of the Colossal Titan. A ruthless military man who fears the loss of his power and privilege should humanity expand beyond the walls, Kubal is the one who murdered Grisha Yeager and his wife, but not before stealing and taking his titan serum. Transforming later into the Colossal Titan, Kubal shatters the outermost wall to allow the titans to kill countless civilians and condemn others to poverty, disease and starvation when life in the next wall is unsustainable for the poor. When a mission comes to reclaim the lost territory, Kubal attempts to sabotage it and get the entire Survey Corps killed before trying to have Eren Yeager executed when he discovers he's Grisha's son who can also transform. A ruthless thug dedicated to preserving his power and comfort, Kubal demonstrates that he is more vile than any mindless Titan.
  • Friendly Fandoms: While the films have largely been disowned by the manga's fandom, a number of Godzilla fans have taken a liking to them due to their usage of practical rubber suit effects and Toho's involvement being Fanfic Fuel for crossovers.
  • Narm: Jean's demise with Eren screaming his name can come off as unintentionally comedic.
  • Nausea Fuel: Seeing the inside of Titan's stomach for one with most of the bodies decomposing. Likewise the Shaky Cam of the fights might not sit well with people who have motion sickness.
  • Replacement Scrappy: How fans view Shikishima, who they view as a poor replacement for Breakout Character Levi, with a mix of Reiner.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: Although the production started before the manga's anime adaptation anime aired on television, fans consider this the Japanese equivalent of The Last Airbender, another live-action bastardization of a beloved animated property.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Many characters being Adapted Out, along with the second movie completely diverting from the manga, were sour spots for fans.
    • Ironically several plot developments and facts in the movie would be included in the manga in the years following the movie's release, most notably the wall civilization being an isolated society in a more technologically developed world, Titans were humans prior to their transformation, Hange being the commander of the Survey Corps and Eren's long-lost brother being a titan shifter and a villain. It's highly likely the author of the series slipped these in as foreshadowing on whats to come since, at the time, it was a ways off before they were revealed. Nearly comes off as Hilarous In Hindsight from a certain point of view.
