* AllAnimationIsDisney: This is not helped by the fact that ''An American Tail'' and its sequels were regular showings on Creator/DisneyChannel and Creator/ToonDisney, or the fantastic AwardBaitSong similar to the ones that Disney became so well-known for in subsequent years. The closest thing to it being Disney is that many of the animators once worked there.
* AnimationAgeGhetto: ''Series/SiskelAndEbert'''s complaint about the movie was that it was too dark and depressing for children to handle. They said much the same thing about every Creator/DonBluth movie though. The box office money it made shows that kids and adults were watching it anyway.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** "Somewhere Out There". Enough said.
** Music/JamesHorner's orchestration sets the tone of the film (and the first sequel; see below) quite nicely. In some places, it's hard to believe it was written for an animated film.

* FirstInstallmentWins: Though there was a stretch during the nineties where ''Fievel Goes West'' was equally well-known, due to being a decent film with a simple genre hook, and also a spin-off series to keep it in kids' minds. Since then it's slipped back below the original in terms of popularity.
* FriendlyFandoms: Fans of this movie are generally on good terms with fans of ''Disney/TheGreatMouseDetective'' even though they were DuelingMovies. The popular Olivia/Fievel CrossoverShip is probably a testament to that. Fans of this movie are also part of the greater Bluth fandom and generally get along with fans of other Bluth movies, too.
* GeniusBonus:
** When Tiger tearfully mentions that he lost his family, which consisted of 5 brothers, 10 sisters, and 3 fathers. A mother cat's litter can be fathered by more than one tomcat.
** The Irish mouse specifically notes that the cat that killed his love was a calico. In other words, she was killed by a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_and_Tans Black and Tan]].
** Warren's Shakespeare quote just before he sells Fievel to a sweatshop, "Oh pardon me thou bleeding piece of Earth, that I am meek and gentle with these butchers..." comes from ''Theatre/JuliusCaesar'', specifically Antony's lament over Caesar's dead body after he was betrayed by Brutus. Meaning it was a clue that Warren was about to betray Fievel.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: Universal Studios at least seems to be under this impression for the series as a whole, making a lot of merchandise and home video releases exclusively available in Europe and not America, in a weird inverted example of NoExportForYou. DVD releases of the short-lived spinoff series ''Fievel's American Tails'', as well as an odd Playstation 2 video game adaptation of the first film, were only released in Europe. The first film did do extremely well overseas, so perhaps there is reasoning behind this.
* HarsherInHindsight: Try to watch this movie the same way after watching Creator/DonBluth being interviewed by Creator/DougWalker, where he admits the film was heavily inspired by his rarely seeing his numerous siblings anymore, as well as how his marriage to his work, while he isn't ashamed of it, forced him to forego any kind of family of his own.
* IconicCharacterForgottenTitle:
** The movie is sometimes mistakenly called "Fievel" - that the sequel ''does'' have Fievel's name in the title likely doesn't help.
** Interestingly, in most other countries Fievel's name ''is'' in the title. Take Germany's ''Feivel Der Mauswanderer'' (Fievel The Mouse Wanderer), Spain's ''Fievel Y El Nuevo Mundo'' or French's ''Fievel et le Nouveau Monde'' (Fievel And The New World), for instance.
* MisaimedMarketing: Infamously, if unintentionally (one would hope), done by UsefulNotes/McDonalds. One of their special promotions tied into the film's winter release was a special offer involving Fievel... '''Christmas''' stockings, despite Fievel being obviously Jewish. The Anti-Defamation League was not pleased.

** Fievel looking like he's having a seizure right before a huge tidal wave sweeps him out to sea.
** Any time Fievel ScreamsLikeALittleGirl. Which happens ''frequently'', unfortunately.
** All of Creator/DonBluth's animation trademarks are present here. Most of all; Papa rarely ever closes his mouth.
* NarmCharm: Fievel and Tanya singing "Somewhere Out There", with their little mouse voices cracking when they hit the high notes. To some it might be annoying, but to others, [[{{Squee}} it's so cuuute!]]
** Some [[TastesLikeDiabetes find it annoying]] ''[[TastesLikeDiabetes because]]'' [[TastesLikeDiabetes it's so cute]]!
* OneSceneWonder: Moe. He's onscreen for less than a minute and has only two lines, but his appearance makes a pretty effective and memorable JumpScare and he's regarded as one of the scariest characters in the whole movie.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: Tony has a female voice actress and is a rare male example of FurryFemaleMane, so it's inevitable that there'd be a little ViewerGenderConfusion for some. Though them having such blatant LesYay with Bridget would be pretty unheard of in an animated movie ''today'', let alone in 1986.
* TheWoobie: Fievel. Your mileage probably won't vary much.
** JerkassWoobie: The three orphan bullies, if you stop and think about it.
[[AC:Fievel Goes West and Fievel's American Tails]]
* AngstWhatAngst: Fievel's parents really don't seem sad or concerned enough when Fievel falls off the train, and when they get to Green River, they're more concerned about where they're going to be living than the whereabouts of their son. And when Fievel is reunited with them, they're happy, but they don't make a big deal out of it, as if it were some daily occurrence.
** Though, once they get to Green River, one of the first things Papa says is "Fievel will come! He's a Mousekewitz!" on the assumption that Fievel is still alive and will show up in Green River sooner or later. After all, if Fievel survived getting thrown into the Atlantic Ocean, he can survive walking through a desert. In any case, Papa assumes correctly.
** It's kind of an EnforcedTrope; the writers seemed to want to avoid any and all angst and pathos in ''Fievel Goes West'' and keep things LighterAndSofter in order to distance it from the first movie (which is probably why Tanya gets tomatoes thrown at her for singing "Somewhere Out There"). Not to mention we saw plenty of Fievel's family mourning him in the first film already and it might have been redundant.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The whole soundtrack to ''Fievel Goes West'' is great, with Music/JamesHorner returning to nail the Western feel and Cathy Cavadini's singing often being considered the highlight. "Dreams to Dream" stands out as an AwardBaitSong easily on par with "Somewhere Out There", if not superior.
* AssPull: Fievel somehow turning his cap inside out into a cowboy hat, and back again [[BookEnds at the ending]]. Awesome as it is, it is never alluded to in the first film and just serves the plot and tone of the sequel.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment:
** Fievel gets sent away from the Indian mice, bouncing on a tumbleweed. While this happens, he is bouncing all the way back to the town while random critters sing the theme from ''Rawhide''.
** Tiger dancing to "Puttin' on the Ritz" with a skeleton. Funny as hell, yes, but whaa--?
* BrokenBase:
** Opinions are nearly evenly divided on whether ''Fievel Goes West'', with its DenserAndWackier tone, was impressively an EvenBetterSequel or [[{{Sequelitis}} an embarrassment to all the first movie stood for]]. The fact that, unlike other Bluth films, ''An American Tail'' ended with a SequelHook and was actually intended to have a sequel did help swing opinions in its favor when it was announced.
** Fans have debated the canon status of this film for quite some time. The third movie seems to imply that it was AllJustADream, but it's vague enough that it can be interpreted as a mere shout-out.
** A third group of fans also see it as non-canon, not because of the dream but because Creator/DonBluth was not involved. However, while Bluth was responsible for the first movie's gloomier atmosphere, he did not have a lot of creative input, most of which went to Spielberg and writer David Kirschner, who ''did'' return for the sequel. In the grand scheme of things, Bluth's role was expendable.
** The Tanya/Waul fan pairing, which people either love or loathe.
* DracoInLeatherPants: Cat R. Waul to his fangirls, especially the ones who ship him with Tanya.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Tanya seems to be way more popular among the fandom than Fievel himself, as is Cat R. Waul. For the latter, being voiced by Creator/JohnCleese helps.
* HarsherInHindsight: Wylie Burp walking off into the sunset at the end. [[AuthorExistenceFailure This was Jimmy Stewart's final role.]] He didn't die for a few years after the film came out, but still ...
* IdiotPlot: Cat R. Waul being the BigBad of the TV series means almost every episode requires every character except Fievel to fall for his latest scheme.
* MemeticMolester: From ''Fievel's American Tails'', there's Dr. Travis T. Hippocrates, a traveling doctor who encourages Fievel to give strange candy to everyone in Green River (which ends up giving everyone hiccups, and he sells them a placebo "cure"). Fievel doesn't think twice about taking candy from a stranger. Later on when Fievel refuses to be a part of his scheme anymore, he grabs Fievel by the shoulders very suggestively and says "Fievel, my boy, I'm afraid ''that'' was the wrong answer.", and the scene fades to black.
** It's also not hard to see Cat R. Waul as one too considering the creepy undertones between him and Tanya (a [[VagueAge supposedly]] teenage girl even if you factor in ValuesDissonance).
* MemeticMutation: "The ''Laaaaaaaaazy'' Eye!"
* TheProblemWithLicensedGames: The ''Fievel Goes West'' game for the UsefulNotes/SuperNintendoEntertainmentSystem wasn't too bad of a side-scroller, but it wasn't too impressive either. In the early 2000's Fievel even got a game on the UsefulNotes/GameBoyAdvance, ''An American Tail: Fievel's Gold Rush'', which seemed to take place after ''Fievel Goes West'' and played a lot like the Super Nintendo game (odd given that Universal had spent so much effort trying to convince everyone that the movie never happened). This trope is played far more straight with the random ''An American Tail'' game that came out for the UsefulNotes/PlayStation2 [[NoExportForYou in Europe]] (which actually plays disturbingly a lot like VideoGame/{{Superman 64}}). The PC game that follows the first two films is another major offender, being targeted towards younger audiences but having insanely hard puzzles that would stump the target audience in addition to featuring 2D sprites being meshed with poorly rendered stills from the movies.
* SequelDisplacement: When it first came out and for a few years after, though it's slowly gone away.
* TakeThatScrappy: Tanya's first scene in the movie has her begin to sing 'Somewhere Out There'. People throw produce at her to make her stop.
** Despite having been a popular song, you get the feeling the creators of the sequel ''kinda'' hate it, and maybe even hate the first film in general. It's treated as this trope despite neither Tanya nor the song having been hated by most of the audience; only detractors who hated how popular the song got would be amused by the scene. To put it in a modern perspective, picture something like this happening to someone singing "Let It Go" in the sequel to ''Disney/{{Frozen}}''.
* UncannyValley: The stone mountain in Tiger's shape that leads the mouse tribe to think he's their god. At one point a shadow comes over it and makes the stone looks like it has a face, which looks far more nightmarish than it has any right to be.
* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: Whatever your opinion of the film itself, it boasts some absolutely beautiful and fluid animation for a Don Bluth sequel made without Bluth's involvement.


[[AC: The Direct-to-Video Sequels]]
* {{Anvilicious}}: ''The Treasure of Manhattan Island'' and its constant reminders that the Europeans did some pretty awful things to the Native Americans. Granted, SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped, but it tends to go a little out of its way to do so at times.
* BizarroEpisode: The fourth movie, ''The Mystery of the Night Monster'', really doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the series. While the third movie at least made a few allusions to the first movie, the fourth one is just kind of all by itself canonically. At worst it seems like a recycled plot for a ''WesternAnimation/ScoobyDoo'' movie.
** It was created at the same time Universal was producing two "spooky" themed ''WesternAnimation/AlvinAndTheChipmunks'' DirectToVideo movies, so it would seem ''The Mystery of the Night Monster'' was part of some spooky phase their animation studio was going through.
* ContestedSequel: Though most fans agree that both films don't stand up to the first two movies, there is still disagreement over which of the direct-to-video movies is better than the other. Judging by forums, the third is much preferred over the fourth, but Rotten Tomatoes would beg to differ (where ''The Mystery of the Night Monster'' inexplicably managed to get a higher percentage rating than ''Fievel Goes West'').
* EnsembleDarkhorse: One of Madame Mousey's henchcats, nicknamed "Twitch", seems to have a small following on Website/DeviantArt.
** Madame Mousey herself, and to a lesser extent Nellie Brie, both also have a strangely sizable amount of fan work devoted to them.
* {{Fanon}}: There are fan theories which link the direct to video sequels to ''Fievel Goes West'', and several different explanations for why Bridget didn't appear in the 3rd or 4th movies but is seen with Tony in the second (which would have to have happened after the third and fourth movie chronologically for them all to be canon).
* FanonDiscontinuity: For a lot of fans (especially if they really liked ''Fievel Goes West'', due to the third film proclaiming it to be AllJustADream) insist these movies never happened. On the other hand, the third film is remembered by fans of Creator/TMSEntertainment at least. Meanwhile, the above {{Fanon}} is usually followed with the understanding that the creators of the third movie ''probably'' wanted to RetCon ''Fievel Goes West''. It's just more fun for fans to disregard that and try to make sense of the jumbled continuity themselves.
* OnlyTheCreatorDoesItRight: Tends to be the opinion of most fans when it comes to the direct-to-video sequels (as well as those who dislike ''Fievel Goes West'' due to Bluth's lack of involvement). Then again, compared to other Bluth sequels, they could have been a lot worse.
* TastesLikeDiabetes: Some of the moments with the mice children throughout.
** The song ''Who will'' in ''Night Monster'', which is perhaps the most sickeningly saccarine song in the entire series.
*** Tony's singing also counts as {{Narm}}.
* ToyShip: Fievel and Cholena have a few ShipTease moments together, more than she and Tony do (their duet, "Anywhere in Your Dreams", being the example that stands out the most). For the most part they're the FanPreferredCouple of the film (also helped by fans who [[ShipMates prefer Tony staying with Bridget]]).
