  • Award Snub: Despite the acclaim it received (including a special citation as Roger Ebert's favorite film of 2000), the movie failed to receive a Best Picture or Director nomination. Particularly notable as it still managed to win an Academy Award for its Screenplay over Erin Brockovich and Gladiator, which were both actual Best Picture nominees that year (and in the case of the latter, the eventual winner).
  • Awesome Music: All of the music, but the scene where everyone on the bus sings along to "Tiny Dancer" is particularly riveting.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Philip Seymour Hoffman playing Lester Bangs. Both men died of drug overdoses.
  • Memetic Mutation: "I AM A GOLDEN GOD!"
  • Retroactive Recognition:
  • Values Dissonance:
    • While Penny is barely conscious from a drug overdose, William quips about how many men she's been with before kissing her in what's portrayed as a heartwarming moment in a Coming of Age Story. This would not go down well today.
    • Similarly, three of the Band-Aids playfully forcing William to engage in sexual acts to "deflower" him of his virginity status is treated as a fun, positive experience for him. Seeing as though William makes it very clear that he's far below the age of consent during the events of the film, seeing three grown adults essentially commit statutory rape on him is more than a little uncomfortable to watch in the modern day.
