Americans Hate Tingle: Italy seems to be the only place where Romain Duris didn't earn praise for his role as Cinquanta (everywhere else he was deemed an Ensemble Dark Horse), as his Italian accent was deemed unconvincing.
Awesome Music: Daniel Pemberton's score is absolutely terrific, bouncing between being operatic to experimental. The most notable highlight being the track "J. Paul Getty".
Dancing Bear: The film gained a lot of notoriety around its release simply because a significant portion of the film had to be reshot mere weeks before release given the decision to recast Kevin Spacey's role after his history of sexual misconduct came to light, which many people thought made the film remarkable irrespective of its quality.
Draco in Leather Pants: A few reviews noted that Christopher Plummer is so unavoidably charming that you find yourself thinking he has a good point about not paying the ransom and making all his relatives into targets.
Ensemble Dark Horse: Romain Duris earned praise for his role as Cinquanta, thanks to his charismatic performance and surprisingly nuanced realtionship he has with Paul.
Memetic Badass: Whenever an actor in an upcoming movie was suddenly hit with accusations of sexual misconduct, people would point to Christopher Plummer and say he should take over the part.
Memetic Mutation:
- When Spacey was still scheduled to play Getty, many remarked on the similarity of the make-up used to make him appear an old man to that of make-up used on Guy Pearce in Scott's previous film Prometheus.
- Plummer's recasting of Spacey within weeks of the film's release led to jokes about him retroactively replacing Spacey in every film the latter had ever done or indeed the films of any other celebrity caught in a sexual abuse/harassment scandal. Deadpool 2 got in on it with a fourth-wall-breaking news report saying Christopher Plummer had turned down a role in the film, in light of T.J. Miller's own problems.
Overshadowed by Controversy:
- Pretty much every conversation about or reference to the film is guaranteed to mention the replacement of Kevin Spacey, and by extension Spacey's own sexual misdeeds.
- While Michelle Williams and a number of other cast members agreed to do the reshoots for minimal wages, Mark Wahlberg got a huge pay increase for the reshoots and refused to allow Christopher Plummer's casting until he was paid. This proved to be highly controversial, and Ridley Scott, who had no idea, was furious when the story broke. Wahlberg subsequently announced he would be giving it all to Time's Up, a charity that protects women from harassers.
Questionable Casting:
- Many were initially confused by Spacey's casting as J. Paul Getty and decried the unconvincing make-up used to make him appear Getty's age. However, it is widely agreed that Christopher Plummer, Spacey's replacement, is a much better fit for the role than he would have been.^note
- There was some backlash to Mark Wahlberg. While most people found his performance fine, some felt his casting as Fletcher Chase a little out of place in comparison to everyone else.
Special Effect Failure: While the reshoots with Plummer are otherwise rather seamlessly edited into the film, the flashback scene of Getty meeting with the Saudis in the desert contains a rather noticeable green-screen effect around the parts of the frame which Plummer has been spliced into. This is due to how, back when Spacey was on board, the scene was shot on location and was rather expensive, so when Spacey was replaced with Plummer, shooting the scene on location again was unaffordable, requiring the green-screen.^note
Squick: When Paul gets his ear cut off. Prepare to cringe, big time.
They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Gail's children besides Paul have very few scenes, most of which are at the beginning of the movie. Giving them more screen time could have added to the drama of getting Paul back, and to Gail's parental worries.
