- Base-Breaking Character: Kate. Some love her creativity, determination, knowledge and chemistry with Matt. Others find her impetuous and bratty who just has to get her way, whether or not the situation treats these as flaws.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Nadira, for those who not involved in the Ship-to-Ship Combat with Nadira/Matt and Kate/Matt. Mysterious, beautiful, and yet also a pretty complex character.
- Ho Yay: When a Love Square ensues in Skybreaker, Matt and Kate are very understanding about how attractive their respective rivals Hal and Nadira are.
