YMMV / A Dose of Buckley

Go To

  • Fandom Rivalry: There was a bit of discord when Drunken Peasants (a podcast co-hosted by The Amazing Atheist) aired an A Dose of Buckley video that ranted about stoners and people who were "addicted" to marijuana. TJ said (somewhat facetiously) that he doesn't want any of Buckley's subscribers, and that led to some problems since these ranty internet dudes tend to have overlapping fanbases. Buckley usually avoids E-Drama, so him becoming a DP character is unlikely, but he did write a snarky open letter to TJ, which TJ responded to with equal levels of snark on his Tumblr.
  • He Panned It, Now He Sucks!: He's gotten this a few times, particularly on his "Top 10 worst songs of [year]" lists. At the beginning of "The 10 Worst Songs of 2013", Buckley briefly laments how alternative rock "has went from this (plays clip of The Smashing Pumpkins) to this (plays a clip of "Breezeblocks")". Needless to say, this really didn't go well with alt-J fans. Especially when you consider Alt-J technically aren't even an alternative rock band in the traditional sense.
  • Heartwarming Moments: In his "Celebrities vs. Entitled Fans" video, he commented on the list of Berserk Buttons on his TV Tropes entry.
"Also...you watch way too much A Dose of Buckley. Outside is fun too (but seriously, great job)."
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In his "Ten Worst Songs of 2013," he listed YG's "My Nigga" as an honorable mention, noting how Lil Wayne must be jealous about how many times the N-word is said in the song. Lil Wayne would eventually be featured in a remix of the song, where he (unsurprisingly) says the N-word a lot.
    • In the "Target in Canada" rant, Buckley states that someone needs to figure out what to do with 100+ empty department store buildings, coming up with his own solution. Just nine months after that video was released, Target announced it would shutter all of its Canadian stores.
    • In 2009, he made "Sherlock Homo", which depicted Sherlock in a homosexual relationship with Watson. In 2010, there is a certain show partially known for its Ho Yay shippers.
    • In his first Baking with Buckley, he mocked a comment on his Occupy Wall Street video that referenced The Amazing Atheist. Three years later, The Amazing Atheist would make a video criticizing his 4/20 video.
    • In his video on Floyd Mayweather from 2012, he remarks that he wouldn't be surprised if nobody knew who he was because "Nobody cares about boxing anymore." Three years later, Mayweather would have a match against Manny Pacquiao that became one of the most-hyped sporting events of the year. (Mayweather won.)
    • In his Musical Autopsy on Beyonce's "7/11," he talks about how songs meant to inspire dance crazes are passe. A few months later, Silento's "Watch Me" would become one of the biggest hits of the summer, and ended up topping his year-end worst list.
    • In his "10 Worst Songs of 2014" list, while talking about the #1 spot "Hello Kitty" by Avril Lavigne, he mentions the song was co-written by her ex-boyfriend Chad Kroeger, and briefly shows a massive plea to them to never procreate, while saying that the product of them would be more horrific than if you held up a signed photo of a shirtless Niall to a hoard of Directioners. He was probably more than relieved when the two split just nine months after the video was made.
    • In his "10 Worst Songs of 2014" video, he makes fun of Mike Posner's 2013 song "On Top of the World" for incorrectly predicting that Posner would be huge again "this time next year." Buckley remarks "Try the climb again next year." One year later, Posner would release "I Took a Pill in Ibiza," which would go on to become his first top 10 hit in six years.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: His "Ten Worst Songs" videos have ten times the views of his regular rants.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • In his "autopsy" of Florida Georgia Line, the end is an extremely hateful rant against them and that music that plays in the background just make the whole thing pretty freaky.
    • The ending of his Christmas Song video adds Christmas bells to the background music which, combined with the rant about "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" somehow makes it even more ominous. What a great way to end 2013, huh? (Not counting a follow-up video to his video about Kim Kardashian, this is his last video of 2013)
    • While Buckley's anger is usually Played for Laughs, him getting angry over Mike Kogan telling people to "educate themselves with Urban Dictionary" in Scumbags of the Internet 4 sounds like he is genuinely angry.
    • We get a second dose of this when a writer for The Odyssey plagiarized his work (most notably his rants on Etsy, the Bruce Jenner incident and his Musical Autopsies of "7/11" and "Bitch Better Have My Money") and ends up being featured on Scumbags of the Internet #10 where Buckley shows us how pissed he is.
Buckley: And we know she watches my work so hi, Rachel! Thank you for becoming today's Scumbag of the Internet and actually doing one thing well. Showing us all that whatever we do in life, we'll always be better than you are.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Many of Buckley's rants deal with then-current topics. Sometimes, he deliberately invokes and lampshades this in his videos, often mentioning music acts popular at the time of release, usually prospective one hit wonders (e.g., OMI in "Twitter and Celebrity Worship", DNCE in "YouTube vs The Record Labels: Goliath vs Goliath", etc).
