** Whitley in season 4. The audience is supposed to root for Whitley when she sets out to get Dwayne because the show wants you to believe that they're "meant to be". However, proudly setting out to destroy a perfectly healthy relationship simply because she thinks she deserves Dwayne more is flat out villain behavior.

Ship tease, suspiciously similar substitute, and took a level in jerkass belong on the main page not YMMV

* ShipTease: If you have been watching this entire series from Season 2 onward, you can't help but notice those (not-so) subtle clues of something blossoming between Dwayne and Whitley; some might argue the series was setting this up even when Dwayne still had eyes for Denise in Season 1.

* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Freddie and Kim have quite a few personality traits that remind viewers of Denise/Maggie and Millie, respectively.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Dwayne and Ron started out as couple of goofy, somewhat weird, but all-around nice guys and while they pretty much remain decent throughout the entire series, 3 seasons in sees Dwayne treating Whitley far worse than he ever would have treated Denise Huxtable, even after they become an OfficialCouple, while Ron becomes a {{Casanova}} and [[AllMenArePerverts pervert]] with only minimal CharacterDevelopment in the final two seasons.

* BizarroEpisode: The two-part episode "The Getaway" is incredibly farcical to the point that it plays like an episode ''Series/ThreesCompany'' complete with cartoonish thugs, a drugs mix-up, and Dwayne and Ron dressing up as women.

** Though they claim that they didn't get together until the '90s, Darryl M. Bell (who played "Ron") met his future significant other Tempestt Bledsoe when she was 15 and he was 25 when she guest-starred as her ''Cosby Show'' character Vanessa. With grooming in Hollywood such a hot topic, it's a little hard to watch said episode considering Ron salivates over Vanessa and her friend even after Dwayne warns him that they look way too young.

* MyRealDaddy: Debbie Allen was brought in as the Showrunner starting with the second season and it is universally agreed that the show [[GrowingTheBeard Grew the Beard]] after she took over. This became especially apparent years later after the accusations of sexual assault and later arrest of Bill Cosby led to many attributing the true success of this series to Allen. Tellingly, while ''The Cosby Show'' got pulled from syndication and streaming, ''A Different World'' is still wildly available.

Non-YMMV tropes.

* CompositeCharacter: Freddie combines Denise's free-spirited worldliness and lackadaisical nature with Maggie's gabbiness, feminism, and more serious attitude towards academics and social/political matters. Ironically, she's bi-racial and joined the cast almost immediately after both Lisa Bonet and Marisa Tomei left.
** She also inherits both Maggie's and Denise's dorm mate (Jaleesa) and their antagonistic relationship with Whitley.

* LaserGuidedKarma: A romantic example. Whitley kisses Dwayne while he's still dating Kinu (among her other attempts to split them apart) and this leads to them breaking up. Much later, Dwayne goes on a dinner date with another girl after he and Whitley have a falling out, leading to her calling off their engagement and eventually becoming engaged to Byron. And then she cheats on Byron by sleeping with Dwayne, which, in part, leads to her calling off her wedding to Byron and marrying Dwayne immediately after instead.

* ContractualPurity: Lisa Bonet. She was written out of the show due to her pregnancy. At first, Debbie Allen wanted to include it, but Bill Cosby stated unequivocally that while Lisa Bonet could be pregnant, Denise Huxtable would ''not'' be pregnant out of wedlock. Cue her dropping out, moving back home and taking a year off ''both'' shows while exploring the jungle.
