World Building: Chess World

Under construction.

Tropes Present In Chess World:

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade -The White paladins' blessed swords can cut through seemingly anything.
  • A Father to His Men - Most of the kings do this to some extent (with the Green King being a mother to her men, obviously) but none on quite the same level as the Black Prince Seraiah, who actually refers to his soldiers as "my child."
  • Arcadia - The Green Kingdom
  • Armchair Military - Averted in the kings, but many commanders within the various armies are this.
  • Attack Animal - The Blue Army's clockwork, the Black Army's specially bred soldiers, and (though treated more as allies then weapons) the Red Army's wyverns. The Blue Queen can qualify as well with her numerous cybernetics.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking - Most of the kings, but especially the Red, White, and Blue Kings. Also, all of the queens.
  • Battle Couple - Janan and Inanna, Joan and Urud, Maya and Mikhail...
  • Big Bad - The Anti-Paladins. While not involved in everything they are the one group every kingdom will work together against.
  • Bigger Stick - While there are Blue soldiers who try to better themselves physically the Kingdom's primary strategy is to let their advanced technology fight for them.
  • Blood Knight - Most of the Red Kingdom.
  • Boom Town - The Green Kingdom was built in twenty years. Perhaps justifiable thanks to the help of druids.
  • Cannon Fodder - The pawns, usually, but depending on the army involved this could include everyone.
  • Chessmaster - The kings.
  • Church Militant - The White Army, as well as the Anti-Paladins (though they're more Evil Cult Militants). Although technically atheist the Black Army regularly approaches this level of fanaticism.
  • Colonel Kilgore - The Red King
  • A Commander Is You -
    • Anti-Paladin - Guerilla/Technical
    • Black - Ranger/Loyal
      • Seraiah - Elitist/Loyal
    • Blue - Mario/Research
    • Green - Ranger/Diplomat
    • Red - Spammer/Brute Force
      • Janan - Ranger/Unit Specialist
    • White - Mario/Loyal
  • Conflicting Loyalty - One of the main causes of people defecting to the Green Kingdom.
  • Dangerous Deserter - The Green Kingdom are often mistaken for this, though they're not.
  • Dark Is Not Evil - The Black Kingdom, embodied by Seraiah, who is a very caring individual despite being the son of Lucifer.
  • The Dog Bites Back - The queen unit in Seraiah's faction, or more specifically what it did to their previous commander.
  • Doomsday Device - If the Blue King were to detonate all of the magic crystals under his Kingdom at once the resulting explosion would blanket half the planet in ash.
  • Eagle Squadron - A lot of the lesser kingdoms will do this. Additionally, the White Kingdom did this against the Blue for a while before openly declaring war.
  • Environmental Symbolism - Especially the Red and Black Kingdoms.
  • Forever War - Part of the founding principle behind the Red Army was that their king found war to be really, really fun and wanted to fight forever.
  • General Ripper - Many of the Kings, especially Red and Black. The Blue King comes close simply because as a machine he has no sense of morality; of course he also has no emotion meaning he can't enjoy killing either.
  • Green Rocks - The Blue Kingdom's magic crystals, even if they're not green. (They're light blue.)
  • Human Chess - The entire point.
  • Implausible Fencing Powers - The Blue King and Queen are more than capable of this. Justified due to their being a robot and a cyborg respectively.
  • Keystone Army - The king unit present in every army.
  • Kill It with Fire - The White Kingdom's preferred element is fire.
  • The Kingdom - Averted. Every major nation (except the Anti-Paladins) is called a kingdom, but many of them are large and not all are good.
  • Leave No Survivors - The Red King's revenge against his former kingdom.
  • The Lost Woods - The Green Kingdom
  • Magic: The Gathering - Aside from black the colors and their philosophies are pretty much intact. The creator of the concept tried to avoid this but failed.
  • The Medic - The Blue Bishops.
  • Medieval European Fantasy - Played straight and averted. While Chess World contains many aspects of Medieval Europe most of the kingdoms are based on other civilizations, none of which are European.
  • The Musketeer - Blue soldiers' spears can be used to fire energy bolts, making them effective short and long range weapons.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong - A lot of citizens of the Blue, White, and Black Kingdoms. Isaac in particular despises his kingdom, but will still fight to protect it because he believe the White Kingdom is worse.
  • Nebulous Evil Organization - The anti-paladins.
  • No One Gets Left Behind - The Black Army, especially Seraiah's unit. The Blue Army is a lesser example as, while Deep Blue considers most of his troops expendable, he will never allow the kingdom's technology to fall into enemy hands and will make them self-destruct first.
  • Normally, I Would Be Dead Now - The queen unit in Seraiah's faction. Subverted in that he is dead by the end of the fight, but keeps going anyway.
  • Officer and a Gentleman - Most white soldiers follow the laws of chivalry. Seraiah follows this trope as well.
  • One-Man Army - Most of the rooks are capable of this, as are the queens.
  • Our Vampires Are Different - Getting bit doesn't make you a vampire, but drinking vampire blood does.
  • Planet of Hats - Each of the kingdoms is based around a basic philosophical principle.
    • Black - Advancement of self and loyalty to the state.
    • Blue - Scientific advancement unhindered by morality.
    • Green - World peace and prosperity.
    • Red - Living life to the fullest.
    • White - Tradition and morality.
  • Poisoned Weapons - The Black Knights use poisoned claws.
  • Power Equals Rarity - Averted and played straight. Most powerful weapons are mass produced; every White paladin carries a blessed sword and energy blasters are so common in the Blue Army even the pawns have them. On the other hand, in most kingdoms the really powerful weapons are generally reserved for the kings and queens, to ensure they'll always be a step above their followers.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy - Most of the Red Kingdom.
  • Red Right Hand - Vampires look human except for their fangs and gold eyes with red sclera. Seraiah's eyes are black and red. Ironically the true villains of the series, the Anti-Paladins don't use this trope.
  • Schizo Tech - Most of the world is high fantasy/medieval, but then there's the Blue Kingdom's clockwork, and the Black Kingdom's genetic experiments.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism - The Blue Kingdom's clockwork do not actually have Self Destruct Mechanisms. Rather, the Blue King has direct control over every piece of magic crystal on the planet and can cause them to detonate with a single thought.
  • Sociopathic Soldier - Most of the Anti-Paladin forces either start as or become this.
  • State Sec - The Red Kingdom's Honor Guard, created to cull the Red Army of cowards, they're a collection of elite units led by half-immortal damphir.
  • Straight Gay - Isaac
  • Super Soldier - Pretty much every kingdom is obsessed with creating these.
  • Ascended Fanont - This was a vital part of developing the idea.
  • Sweet on Polly Oliver - Subverted. Isaac had a crush on Joan before discovering she was female, but there was nothing subconcious about it, since he's openly gay.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver - Joan, before it came out that she was female.
  • Swiss Army Weapon - The Blue Army's spears.
  • Thwarted Coup de Grāce - Happens in the Green Kingdom's history.
  • To Win Without Fighting - Averted and subverted.
    • Averted in the Red Kingdom's history: the Red King, betrayed and reanimated as a vampire, has his former king utterly at his mercy and every reason to spare him, but instead murders him and everyone else in the capitol city.
    • Subverted in the Black Kingdom's one and only conflict with the Blue Kingdom. After stealing some of the Blue Kingdom's magic crystals and trying to reverse engineer them they draw the wrath of the Blue Army. They prepare to fight back against them only to have the Blue King himself appear...and detonate all of the stolen crystals, turning the facility into a smoldering crater.
  • Treacherous Advisor - One of these led to the death and reanimation of the Red King.
  • Unsettling Gender-Reveal - When Isaac found out Joan was female.
  • Warrior Monk - The White Army paladins.
