''Trollz'' is an American animated television series created by Creator/DiCEntertainment and produced by Andy Heward in 2005, loosely based on the popular Troll dolls from the 1950s. The show revolves around [[FiveManBand five young Troll girls]], each with different personalities--Amethyst, a total sweetheart, Ruby, a willful leader, Sapphire, a studious brainiac, Topaz, a ditzy fashionista, and Onyx, a friendly goth.

While they're different, the "BFFL", AKA Best Friends For Life, are friends til the end. Together, they fight evil with ThePowerOfFriendship, try to impress cute boys, and [[WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld get their homework done]], all while learning about the magic in the world they live in.

Not to be confused with Creator/DreamWorks' ''WesternAnimation/{{Trolls}}'', a 2016 CGI movie also based on Troll dolls.
----
!!This show provides examples of:
* AbusivePrecursors: The trolls of Angermore used their magic for evil. They vanished one day, but their magic was sealed in powerful gemstones that became used in rings. Simon uses one of them as a power conduit.
* {{Adorkable}}: All of the BFFL except for Ruby and Onyx.
* AllJustADream: Happens in the beginning of the first episode as a FakeOutOpening. Amethyst has a dream that her friends didn't know her and ignored her altogether, like she wasn't there.
* AllThereInTheManual:
** Some of the backstory involving Simon is only found online. Besides destroying the old Trollz world by grabbing most of the magic and turning it evil, which is mentioned in the show, Simon also unleashed Black Amber, which nearly destroyed the planet but is never seen on the show.
** Aside from Amethyst's dog, Wa-Wa, the Trollz' pets are only seen on the website and in UK-only toys. [[note]]Ruby has a cat named Za-Za, Topaz has a bunny named La-La, Sapphire has a hamster named Ya-Ya, and Onyx has a lizard named Na-Na.[[/note]]
** Mr. Trollheimer's first name is Slate, which isn't mentioned in the show.
** The tie-in book ''All That Glitters'' reveals how each of the five facets is a tree genus that descended from five trees that made up the first Trollz habitat. The modern-day tree genera include rosalea, blumeria, vitronic, ebonthorn, and auroriana. Ebonthorn is also seen in other books.
* AllTrollsAreDifferent: These ones are cute and can cast magic.
* AlphaBitch: Coral and her friends [[GirlPosse Opal and Jade]]. They're cheerleaders, too.
* AlternativeForeignThemeSong: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCTBGAtgudo The Italian opening]] was different from the openings in other countries.
* AnAesop: Quite a few episodes had one, such as telling others when something's wrong or being yourself.
* AndIMustScream:
** [[spoiler:Zirconia was turned into a tree for 3,000 years and was conscious the whole time. When Simon tries to turn Onyx into a tree, he at first simply imprisons her within one. Eventually she'd become ''part'' of the tree, like what happened with Zirconia.]]
** [[spoiler:Spinell was turned into a dragon that couldn't speak for 3,000 years.]]
* AnimeHair: Everyone but Simon, Jasper, and Snarf has big, impossible hair, and Jasper did originally sport anime hair as well.
* {{Animesque}}: It's western animation but with speedlines, anime-style eyes, and other things.
* ArcVillain: Shale and Mica are antagonists for episodes 7 through 9.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever:
** The episode "Homecoming" has a dragon vs. a fifty-foot cat.
** A giant stone ogre appears in episode 9.
* AudienceSurrogate: Amethyst is this for the first few episodes, as she returns to Trollzopolis from summer vacation and learns the ways of magic when her gem gets its glow.
* BadassAdorable: The Trollz are cute high school girls with big hair, and save the world several times over.
* BalefulPolymorph: [[spoiler: Zirconia's transformation into a tree left her unable to move, talk, or use magic.]]
* BareYourMidriff: The girls' gems are attached to their bellybuttons, and are shown off almost all the time, with the exception of Sapphire.
* BeachEpisode: Three of them make up the last story arc, as the Trolls go on vacation to a tropical island.
* BeautyIsBad: Ruby can be pretty nasty at times, and Coral ''definitely'' is.
** Onyx advises Amethyst that the prettiest prefabricated spell beads can cast the nastiest spells.
* BeautyMark: Onyx has one on the right side of her face.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Make Amethyst or Topaz angry. We dare you.
* BigBad: Simon is the main villain who destroyed Trollzopolis 3000 years ago and intends to finish the job.
* BigNo:
** Done to exaggeration with Topaz as she dramatically jumps over a table to stop [[ItMakesSenseInContext Sapphire from eating a cucumber sandwich]]. Sadly, that wasn't the friend in danger.
** Also done by Onyx in the fourth episode when she notices her gem is dimming.
* BlindedByTheLight: Ogres don't like light, which comes in handy in episode 11 when Sapphire's feet magically glow thanks to a misfired spell.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: Topaz is the blonde, Onyx the brunette, and Ruby the redhead.
* BookEnds: Episode 2 has everyone saving Amethyst from falling into a pit. The last episode has them saving her from falling into [[spoiler: a volcano]].
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Happens when [[spoiler: everyone but Ruby eats Simon's magic cookies]].
* BrokenAesop: In the story arc where the girls turn evil, Ruby worries that her meanness has influenced them into becoming mean. Obsidian tells her that if she sets a bad example, she can change it by setting a good one. It seems okay until Ruby cleans up her act and it fails because Simon's magic was too strong.
* BroughtDownToNormal: Done in the arc where [[spoiler: the Trollz break the Sacred Altar, causing the magic to disappear]]. The next episode has them working to fix things.
* BrutalHonesty:
** Onyx and Ruby have this as character traits, never failing to voice their displeasure (or excitement) about something.
** In episode 9 the stone ogre ''hates'' liars and only accepts the truth, even when it's negative. She asks the trolls if she's ugly, to which Amethyst agrees, but when Mica lies and says she's gorgeous she flies into a rage and attacks him.
* ButtMonkey: Mr. Trollheimer and Snarf are often the subjects of comic mistreatment.
* CantGetAwayWithNuthin: In episode 8 the Trollz participate in an illegal Skoot race. In the next episode they're caught and punished with community service.
* CardCarryingVillain: Simon and Snarf are evil and proud of it. Simon attempted to seize power in the past by turning the good magic evil and grabbing most of it, and hates friendship and other happy things.
* CerebusSyndrome: The latter half of the show's a bit darker than the first, with story arcs about the two remaining Ancients, the girls accidentally causing magic to disappear, and Simon taking over Trollzopolis briefly via brainwashing 4 of the girls to become evil.
* TheCheerleader: Coral, Opal, and Jade. Coral gets extra mean points for being the ''head'' cheerleader.
* ChekhovMIA: While there were originally five Ancients, only three remain, with the other two being a mystery that gets resolved later on.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Both Topaz and [[spoiler: Zirconia]] come across as this.
* CoincidentalBroadcast: In the episode "Onyx's Gem". Justified that it was most likely magically assisted.
* CompilationMovie: All of the DVD releases are 3 episodes edited together as movies:
** ''Best Friends For Life'' has "Best Friends For Life", "Five Spells Trouble", and "First Day of School".
** ''Magic of the Five'' has "Onyx's Gem", "Topaz Possessed", and "The Big Test".
** ''Hair Over Heels'' has "Troll Fast Troll Furious", "The Great Race", and "Into The Woodz".
* CompressedHair: The trolls manage to fit all of that hair underneath their helmets.
* ConceptArt: Seen [[http://neil-googe.deviantart.com/art/trolls-fellas-49140157 here]] for the boy Trollz and [[http://neil-googe.deviantart.com/art/trollz-supporting-cast-49140335 here]] for the Trollz' mentor and villain.
* ConspicuousCG: Seen with Trollzopolis High School, which is CG in wide shots.
* ConvectionSchmonvection: ZigZagged. Amethyst is close to the center of an active volcano and comes out fine...though Ruby's hair doesn't, and is frizzed and burnt from being near it.
* CoolBike: The Skoots, which run on amber and float instead of hugging the ground. A tie-in book reveals that they originally used fossil fuels, but due to pollution switched to amber converters.
* CoolOldGuy[=/=]CoolOldLady: The Ancients are this.
* TheCorruption: On the website, Simon is said to have grabbed most of the Trollz' magic and turned it evil.
* CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: Amethyst remarks in "Onyx's Gem" that if they had just ''[[PoorCommunicationKills talked]]'' to each other about their gems fading, they could've gone to Obsidian instead of falling into a trap.
* CreepyChild: Simon is this at points.
* CreepyCrossdresser: Simon when possessing Topaz [[spoiler: and pretending to be Garnet]]. Snarf when he pretended to be Miss Tourmaline and a cute female poodle.
* CurbStompBattle: More like curb stomp football match between the Ogreville Dandelions and the Trollzopolis Trolls. The Trolls got stomped, somewhat literally.
* CurseCutShort: In one of the Valli Girls' background songs for the series, "The Power of Five", the lyrics go:
-->''It doesn't matter if you scream or what spell you cast / We're five strong girls and we're gonna kick your--''
* CursedWithAwesome: Being a [[spoiler: dragon]] for 3,000 years doesn't sound too bad, though Spinell didn't like it at all.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Many of the Trolls, including the main girls have hair that matches their eye colors.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Amethyst to an extent, and Topaz. Coal is a male example.
* CutShort: The show only lasted one short season.
* CuteWitch: The majority of Trolls, especially the main group.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Onyx likes gothic clothes and has morbid interests, but is a main hero.
* TheDarkSide: One of Simon's plans had Sapphire fall prey to this. Coaxed by a magic mirror, she grew narcissistic and power-hungry, deciding she didn't need her friends anymore. Though she did have regrets about it, and apologized once things were set right.
* DarkSkinnedRedhead: Ruby has bright red hair and Opal has light pink hair.
* DeadpanSnarker: Onyx. Also [[spoiler: Spinell]].
* DemonicPossession: Gremlin Possession, actually; Topaz suffers this when she loses her self-esteem.
* {{Descriptiveville}}: Trollzopolis is full of trolls, and neighboring town Ogreville is full of ogres.
* TheDragon: Snarf, though he's not a literal dragon.
** Simon also has a dragon who's a literal dragon, [[spoiler: until he changes him back to Spinell]].
* DreamingOfThingsToCome: At least one case for Onyx, when she was desperate to find her Ancient. Also [[spoiler: Zirconia]] seems to have had a few.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Onyx is reckless when driving her Skoot, which makes it hard when she decides to race Mica. Simon can't drive one at ''all''.
* DumbBlonde: Topaz has her moments.
* {{Egopolis}}: Pretty much every time Simon manages to take over Trollzopolis, he renames it after him. In fact, he has quite a few names on hand to choose from.
* ElementNumberFive:
** In the series, amber is the source of all magic and is generally treated as a fifth element.
** One of the tie-in books, ''All That Glitters'', is about the girls collecting five tree blossoms that represent the five facets of life. The fifth plant, auroriana, is rainbow-hued and protects against evil magic.
* EnhancedOnDVD: The [=DVDs=] have additional scenes after the televised episodes' endings, as well as extended end credits.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Seen when the Trollz are brainwashed to be evil. Unlike most female examples, they're ''less'' revealing, more like MIB suits. Given Simon's fashion sense it may be justified.
* EvilLaugh: Simon, Snarf, and Coral have them.
* ExactEavesdropping: Villainous example; Simon overhears Coral, Opal, and Jade talking about where the BFFL are headed for vacation.
* ExpositoryThemeTune: The theme tune describes how the girls use magic to fight evil, as well as their everyday activities.
* ExpressiveHair: It's mentioned in one of the episodes that sometimes when a Troll experiences emotion turmoil their hair goes floppy.
* ExtremeDoormat: Amethyst used to only do what her friends wanted to do, and a big part of the first episode is her realizing she can't be like that anymore.
* FalseInnocenceTrick: Simon uses this to escape the Shadow World, pretending to be a scared little boy who'd been trapped there.
* FamousAncestor: Apparently Ruby is a direct descendant of King Trollemagne the First. Although this doesn't have much effect on the story.
** There's a nice ContinuityNod with her last name, Trollman, being a watered-down version of Trollemange.
* FangsAreEvil: Simon, they tend to become more prominent when he's showing just why he was [[SealedEvilInACan locked away]] in the first place. Although they do come across as CuteLittleFangs at times.
* FashionShow: Topaz tries one of these after seeing Jasper looking at models; however, he thought they looked silly.
* FieryRedhead: Ruby has quite the temper and, overall, is hot-blooded.
** Coral, too, when agitated.
* FightingFromTheInside: Topaz does this while possessed by Simon. It doesn't work until her friends help out.
* FiveGirlBand
** TheLeader - Amethyst
** TheLancer - Ruby
** TheSmartGirl - Sapphire
** TheBigGirl - Topaz
** TheChick - Onyx
* FiveManBand: The boy Trollz have this, too.
** TheLeader - Coal
** TheLancer - Jasper
** TheSmartGuy - Alabaster
** TheBigGuy - Rock
** TheHeart - Flint
* {{Foreshadowing}}: In "The Tree and the Dragon" Obsidian saves the Trollz from the dragon by summoning musical instruments. Both the dragon and Onyx cover their ears, clearly disliking the music. [[spoiler:The girls and their Ancients have similar traits, and the dragon turns out to be Spinell, Onyx's Ancient]].
* ForgottenSuperweapon: Villainous example with Snarf. He went OneWingedAngel a grand total of four times in a 27-episode series, and two of those times were in the first two episodes he appeared in. The third time was in episode 11--for about 5 ''seconds'' of screen time. The fourth time was the last episode he appeared in, without even a TransformationSequence.
** Simon's staff was used in Episode 6 and never seen again, despite the fact that it amplified his magic.
* FourFingeredHands: Everyone has four fingers instead of five.
* FunnyAfro: Jasper used to have one until Amethyst's spell made his hair disappear.
* GenderRestrictedAbility: Only girl Trollz can use magic. Originally boys could too, until Simon got his hands on it.
* GettingCrapPastTheRadar:
** In one episode, Coal distracts Snarf by telling him that [[OpenFlyGag his fly's undone]]. After being tricked, Snarf realizes that he doesn't wear pants.
** In the same episode, the girls used this {{subverted rhyme|EveryOccasion}} when fighting Simon:
--> "Simon is crude and Simon is crass, turn this loser into a DONKEY!"
** On the website, Ruby asks in a Q&A "What the [[LastSecondWordSwap spell]] are braces?"
* TheGhost:
** Ruby mentions having a cat a few times, but it's never seen in-show.
** Onyx and Topaz mention having little brothers, but they're never seen either. (Sapphire is an only child, incidentally.)
* GirlinessUpgrade: Compare these to the Troll dolls they were based off of.
* GlamourFailure: Throughout the series, magically disguised people can be revealed by their reflections.
* GoodHairEvilHair: Normally, the girls' hair is curved. When they are upset [[spoiler: or turn evil]], it's all spiky.
* GrandFinale: The final story arc had the BFFL sealing Simon and Snarf away for 1,000 years, reaffirming their friendship, and ending with a Farewell Luau.
* GrandmaWhatMassiveHotnessYouHave: Mr. Trollheimer is quite good-looking compared to the rest of the Ancients. Sapphire even commented that he was cute.
* GreenAesop: The tie-in book "Oops, I Polluted Again" dealt with pollution caused by skoot smoke, Sapphire's attempts to solve it, and Simon's attempt to use it against Trollzopolis.
* GripingAboutGremlins: Simon plays this straight and averts this; he's skilled at building magical machines, but has no aptitude for modern-day technology.
* GrossUpCloseUp: Miss Tourmaline's hairy legs.
* GroundhogDayLoop: The tie-in video game, ''Hair Affair'', has this as the plot; the BFFL relive the same day over again until they can stop Simon from stealing their magic.
* HairReboot: All troll hair seems to have this quality.
* HairTodayGoneTomorrow: Jasper is seen with an afro at first. Then Amethyst's spell makes him lose his hair permanently. [[RuleOfCool He gets over it pretty quickly.]]
* TheHeart: Amethyst; her gem is even shaped like a heart.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: Shale and Mica]] turn good after Onyx and Sapphire risk their lives to save them.
* HufflepuffHouse: In ''All That Glitters'' four of the five facets have stated uses. Rosalea is used for potions, vitronic is used for energy and fighting off illness, ebonthorn is a powerful magic conductor, and auroriana protects against evil magic. Whatever function blumeria has isn't described.
* IdiosyncraticWipes: Hairspray covering the screen, a hairbrush brushing the scene away, lipstick covering the screen, a spell phone entering the screen, lightning cracking the screen, and a spell bead exploding.
* InNameOnly: This show was based on the classic troll dolls, though it and the accompanying toyline only have the big hair and belly button gems in common.
* InSeriesNickname: Trollhiti's volcano is unnamed, so Topaz names it "Mount Krakatrolla."
* IronicEcho: In the episode where Sapphire becomes proud and power-hungry, a MagicMirror is egging her on by telling her she's special. Later, when it's revealed to be Simon, he captures her. When she protests that he told her she was special, he says "You ARE special--the Blue Plate Special!" and calls in orcs to eat her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Ruby is frequently the source of initial conflict among the group, but she's also the most determined to help her friends if they're in trouble. A later story arc emphasizes this when she realizes her friends are acting mean like she does at times, so she vows to clean up her act.
* JiveTurkey: Jasper is fond of using slang, and got into hip-hop over summer break.
* KickTheDog: Simon frequently mistreats Snarf, even though the latter is unwaveringly loyal to him.
* KillerRabbit: Snarf normally appears as a red cute-looking puppy, but get him mad and he turns into a vicious, hulking ogre.
* LaughablyEvil: Simon is a 3000-year-old gremlin who destroyed Trollzopolis once and wields powerful magic, but he looks and acts like a 9-year-old boy and has no aptitude for modern technology. He's also quite proud of being evil, as is his sidekick Snarf.
* TheLeader: Ruby is the Trollz' self-proclaimed leader, even though Amethyst is the main heroine.
* TheLostWoods: The Haunted Woodz, complete with [[ManEatingPlant Troll-Eating Ferns]].
* MagicAIsMagicA:
** Spells vary depending on how you word them; Sapphire wanted to dance and be 'light on her feet', but made her feet glow when she rhymed with 'my feet feel light'. Spell beads can come in prefabricated form to cast specific spells, or blank for the user to create a spell on their own.
** Girl trolls need spell beads to cast magic. This was averted when they cast a beadless transformation spell that required five to be used effectively, and [[spoiler:when they were under Simon's control]].
** Only girl trolls can use magic. Originally everyone could until the BigBad grabbed most of it and turned it evil, minimizing magic as a result.
** The most powerful magic is done with five trolls from five different gem alignments.
** Magic is powered via amber, found in the Amber Caves.
* TheMagicGoesAway[=/=]TheMagicComesBack: This was the focus of an entire arc when the heroes accidentally cause magic to disappear.
* MagicMisfire: Happened a fair amount of times, usually with Ruby's spells.
* MagicalGirl: The Trollz are of the CuteWitch variety, using magic to make life less boring, though they also use it to fight against Simon when necessary.
* {{Magitek}}: Trollzopolis is like this now. Originally it was totally magic-based, with boy Trollz as well as girls being able to use magic. Then Simon came along...
** During the arc where the Sacred Altar is broken and [[spoiler:magic disappears]] it's shown that most of the Troll technology uses magic as a power source at some level. The results include mass blackouts and [[FromBadToWorse more]].
* ManaDrain: In the backstory, Simon grabbed a lot of the magic and turned it evil, taking it from male trolls and minimizing it for girl trolls. His abilities in the present day include magic-draining as well.
* ManipulativeBastard: Mica and his girlfriend Shale, who exploit Sapphire's crush on Mica and fake Shale breaking up with him to use her for their own means.
* MedievalStasis: Simon invokes this in the time travel arc, sending Trollzopolis to the Middle Ages with plans to make sure it stays that way.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: Being an Ancient means you get to either save the day or be captured. [[spoiler:Or, in Zirconia and Spinell's case, turned into a tree and dragon.]]
* MerchandiseDriven: The show was made to help sell Trollz dolls.
* MindControlEyes: When the girls turn evil, the shines disappear from their eyes.
* TheMindIsAPlaythingOfTheBody: Hinted at with the dragon, [[spoiler:who is actually Spinell]].
* TheMirrorShowsYourTrueSelf: Reflections show the true forms behind magical disguises. This also includes [[spoiler: reflections in water]].
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Snarf, at points. This can also be NightmareFuel.
* MugglesDoItBetter: The male Trollz' technical skills are greater than those of the females, on a whole. This became useful in the arc when magic disappeared.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: The school principal, Mr. Trollercrombie, is allergic to goldenrod and beasts from the realm of darkness which cause him to sneeze. Needless to say, when he starts sneezing you know something is going down.
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: In one episode Sapphire meets a friendly ogre named Sandstone, who teaches her how to swim.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Averted; Simon isn't exactly the kind of name you'd want to run from.
** Also averted with the football team the Ogreville Dandelions.
* NervesOfSteel:
** In the first episode, Ruby takes on who she thinks is an ogre with nothing but a tree branch.
** In "Field Trip" Ruby and Rock face the ghost dogs out in the open, using magic and torches to fend them off.
* NeverMessWithGranny: Amethyst's Grandma is normally doing things like baking cookies, but mess with her granddaughter or her friends and she'll come to the rescue. Obsidian and [[spoiler: Zirconia]], while not literal grandmothers, fit this trope as well.
* NeverSayDie: Averted and lampshaded.
-->'''Amethyst:''' Ruby was going to tell the boys that she's sorr--
-->'''Ruby:''' I thought we weren't going to say the s-word. Besides, I'm just apologizing to Rock!
-->'''Amethyst:''' But Rock almost ''died'' when--
-->'''Ruby:''' We weren't going to say the d-word either.
** In another episode, when the girls are brainwashed into becoming evil, Ruby comments that her best friends tried to kill her.
** Still another instance comes when [[spoiler: the Trollz break the magic altar, endangering the Ancients' lives]], and an angry Sapphire says "You don't want them to DIE, do you!?"
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: The girls let Simon and Snarf out of their prison, and spend much of the series trying to put them back there for good.
** In another episode, the girls and boys manage to break the Sacred Altar in the Amber Cavez, [[spoiler: causing magic to disappear and endangering the Ancients' lives.]]
* NoNonsenseNemesis: Simon is this once, though it doesn't work. When [[spoiler: his [[OurDragonsAreDifferent dragon]] betrays him and frees Onyx, the two fly away. Simon's response is to change the dragon back into his true form, the troll Spinell... while he and Onyx are still in the air.]]
* NonHumanHumanoidHybrid: [[AllThereInTheManual Snarf is said to be half ogre and half dog.]] Which leads to {{Squick}} about how he came about, he did mention having a mother once...
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Simon has his moments of this, particularly in the arc where he turned the girls evil.
* OldMaster: Of the Ancients, Obsidian and Mr. Trollheimer fit this the most, teaching the girls and preparing them to fight Simon.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Most of the Ancients look suitably old, except for Mr. Trollheimer who looks like he's in his thirties. Why this is so is never brought up.
* OneWingedAngel: Snarf can turn from a cute puppy into a snarling ogre-demon.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: Only one is seen, though it hates certain kinds of music, is afraid of cats, has painful fire-breathing sneezes, and [[spoiler: is really a transformed Troll]].
* ParentalAbandonment: Of the girls, we only see Amethyst's mom and grandma, Sapphire's mom, and Ruby's dad; the latter only appeared in one episode. Where Onyx and Topaz's parents are is never addressed. We never see the boys' parents at all, though Alabaster's very rich father is mentioned a few times.
* PetTheDog: In the arc where the town was sent back to the Middle Ages, Amethyst stood up for Coral, the AlphaBitch, when Simon threatened her. When things went back to the present Coral thanked her, even if she couldn't remember why.
* PlotMandatedFriendshipFailure: Simon often sets these up. Justified as their friendship is the key to defeating him.
* PowerGlows: Female Trollz' gems glow when they first gain their magic and cast spells. Since a Troll has her magic all her life, a gem fading or not glowing at all is a sign something's wrong.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: The Power of the Five runs off of this, and is often the key to defeating Simon.
* PowersInTheFirstEpisode: Amethyst's powers manifest after her friends' already have, and the first episode has spells cast by a single Troll. In the second episode they cast their first spell together, [[NiceJobBreakingItHero turning Coal into ice and opening the rift to unleash the Big Bad]].
* {{Precursors}}: Simon turning most of the magic evil scared the Trollz' ancestors enough to diminish what was left for girls and neutralize it for boys, reducing magic to a plaything. Obsidian feels the girls will bring a new era of magic to the Trollz.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Simon is over 3,000 years old. He looks and acts like a 9-year old.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Amethyst's dog Wa-Wa. It even has her hairstyle. The other girls have pets too, but aside from Ruby mentioning a cat a couple times, they were never brought up or seen on the show.
** The Trollzopolis school mascot, Puff. It's a cute kitty!
** Snarf, when he's in puppy form. [[MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily Most of the time.]]
* RockThemeNaming: The girls get gems while the boys get rocks and minerals. They even used obscure gems like tourmaline.
* SailorEarth: With the whole RockThemeNaming going on, there's a high potential for fan characters. A popular one is Emerald, as green isn't represented in the color spectrum the girls have.
* {{Scotireland}}: [[spoiler: Spinell]] has an accent like this.
* SecretLegacy: Amethyst's Grandma is an Ancient. Once, her Mom helped out too by giving her a magical, powerful necklace that her grandma used to wear.
* SealedEvilInACan: Simon and Snarf are this. The girls accidentally let them out.
* SealedGoodInACan: [[spoiler: Zirconia]] is more like Sealed Good in a [[spoiler: Tree]].
* ShoutOut: Amethyst's last name, van der Troll, is a reference to Amethyst van der Poll.
* SicklyGreenGlow: Simon's magic is a sickly green.
* SignatureSoundEffect: The school principal's arrival or exit is always accompanied by the sound of squeaky/squishy footsteps.
* {{Smurfing}}: This show is extremely guilty of this. Even molecules are known as trollicules.
* SpeciesSurname: Pretty much every Troll's surname has some form of the word troll in it.
* SpiritualSuccessor: It received one in ''WesternAnimation/SpacePOP'', which was produced by the same person that made ''Trollz''. The ''[=SpacePOP=]'' girls have similar archetypes and character designs to the Trollz characters, as do the villains, up to their pets resembling them.
* SpoiledBrat: Ruby's the most well-off of the girls and isn't afraid to flaunt her wealth at times.
** Coral, too, as befits an AlphaBitch.
* SpontaneousCrowdFormation:
** A crowd gathered to watch a MexicanStandoff between Sapphire and Shale; however, some of their spells hit the audience members.
** This also happens during Coral and Ruby's spelloff at Jasper's party.
* TheStinger: On the [=DVDs=] each episode has an extra scene added at the end.
* StockPunishment: In the Middle Ages arc, the girls were put in pillories. Among other things, ''croutons'' were thrown at them.
* StoryArc: Every three episodes are their own mini-arc.
* StylisticSuck: In one episode the Trollz see a 50s-style video about then-new technology, such as dishwashers.
-->'''Ruby:''' This movie was old when my grandparents were young!
* SuddenlyVoiced: Coral's friends, Opal and Jade, never had speaking lines until the first episode of the very last story arc.
* SugarApocalypse: The Trollz' way of life was destroyed in the past, as was their city. The world almost bit it, too, and some story arcs touch on this happening again if Simon isn't stopped.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Simon, a magical gremlin, has these.
* TagLine: "It's a hair thing!"
* TakenForGranite: In the second episode, the girls turn Coal into ice by mistake. Obsidian said that the spell would only wear off when he melted, so they had to reverse things quickly.
* TameHisAnger: Played with in the final episode, where the girls have all lost their tempers. Rather than losing their anger, they control and use their anger as a positive force.
* ThemeNaming: All the girls are named after gemstones. The boys are named after rocks and minerals.
* ThickLineAnimation: The animation is very thick-lined, especially in closeups.
* TrailOfBreadCrumbs: When Onyx and Topaz head into the Haunted Woodz, Onyx leaves a trail of wild jellybeans to find their way back. Unfortunately, Topaz ate most of them.
* TrainingMontage: The girls put Onyx through one to help her win the Skoot race.
* {{Tsundere}}: Ruby is this for Rock.
* UhOhEyes:
** When Simon's disguised as a Troll, his pupils are larger than real Trolls' are.
** Shale has noticeably different eyes than the other girls, though it's revealed that they're contact lenses. When she takes them off her eyes are normal.
* UncattyResemblance: All the Trollz' pets look like them to a degree, sharing hairstyles and presumably personalities.
* UseYourHead: [[spoiler: Rock defeats Simon this way by smashing his talisman against his head.]]
* UtilityMagic: Thanks to Simon stealing a lot of magic in the past, magic in the present-day Trollzopolis is mainly used for convenience and getting around. Most technology is magic-powered to some degree, including spell phones, watches, and Skoots.
* VirtualPaperDoll: Your Troll on the website.
* VoicesAreMental: Seen when Simon possesses Topaz.
* WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld: The Trollz sometimes have to balance world-saving with schoolwork.
* WeCanRuleTogether: The first time the BFFL and Simon face off, he offers this and even gives them a chance to discuss it among themselves. Naturally, they turn down the offer.
* WhamLine: In episode 4, the Trollz think Simon's a nice little boy and help free him from the Shadow World. Then Snarf catches up to them and approaches Simon.
-->'''Snarf, to Simon:''' Did Snarf do good, Master?
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: [[spoiler: Zirconia and Spinell]], despite having been introduced before the BroughtDownToNormal arc, are not mentioned among the possible Ancient casualties, as if those episodes were meant to be broadcast first. Their absence in the arc where the girls turn evil was HandWaved away by saying they were safely out of reach, but too weak to help.To make up for this, the BeachEpisode arc revolved around them a lot.
* WhenTreesAttack: In "The Big Test" Simon sends walking fir trees to capture Ruby.
* WizardsLiveLonger: Implied to be the case with the Ancients.
* WorldBuilding: This show has a detailed system of magic, several historical events are mentioned, and in one episode the wheres and whys of how girl trolls get their magic is explained. They even have a different calendar system.
* XanatosGambit / BatmanGambit: Simon pulls off one of these in the StoryArc where the girls turn evil. It relies on the likely outcome, but he also plans for the initial plan to fail. [[spoiler: He poses as a new girl in school and befriends them, at the same time ostracizing FieryRedhead Ruby. He and Snarf feed the other four girls cookies, which makes them brainwashed.]] However, that episode he's defeated, so that would be the end of it, right? [[spoiler: Wrong. In the next episode it's revealed that the cookies were time-delayed, and slowly turning the girls evil. He uses Ruby's fondness for pranks and occasional jerkish tendencies to make her think it's ''her'' fault they're acting rowdy, and Ruby doesn't realize his involvement until it's too late.]]
* XtremeKoolLetterz: Lots of things that end in 's' end with 'z', including the title of the show.
* YeOldeButcheredeEnglishe: Done in the arc where Simon turned back time to the Middle Ages. Instances of stuff ending in '-eth' abounded.
* YearOutsideHourInside: When the girls enter the Shadow World during the day, they were only there for a short time, but when they came back the mall was closed and it was late at night.
* YesMan: Shale's NumberTwo, Nikki, agrees with whatever she asks even if she has reservations about it.
* YouDontLookLikeYou: Some [[http://www.animaatjes.de/cliparts/cartoons/trollz/clipart_trollz_animaatjes-4.jpg clip art]] has Onyx's hair and eyes as blue, not purple.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: And green, and purple, and pink... Funnily enough, Ruby's fire-engine red color is dyed. Her natural color is brown.
