"Are you ready, kids?"A Nickelodeon Animated Series about a highly energetic sea sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea. Absorbent and yellow and porous is he. And if nautical nonsense be something you- ok, you probably get it.SpongeBob SquarePants is about the eponymous sea sponge, who is shaped like a kitchen sponge, is extremely optimistic, and has the tendency of annoying most who he comes in contact with. Most except his best bud Patrick Star, a starfish who lives under a rock in more ways than one. The two seem to spend as much time as possible inadvertently bothering their neighbour Squidward Tentacles, who is, unfortunately for him, mistaken by them as the third part of their Power Trio.Spongebob works at the local Krusty Krab restaurant (which is actually a crab pot), which serves Krabby Patties, and is owned by his greedy boss Mr. Eugene Krabs. He's a crab. Rivalling the restaurant is The Chum Bucket, owned by Plankton, who goes to desperate lengths in order to steal the success of the Krabby Patty formula. But, Failure Is the Only Option. There's also Spongebob's pet snail, Gary, who communicates with cat-like 'Meows', and his Texas-accented spunky squirrel friend, Sandy Cheeks, who lives in an underwater dome and ventures forth wearing a bubble-helmet diving suit. Oh and Larry the Lobster, Mrs. Puff, and Pearl... Remember them? The show, first broadcast in 1999, proved to be a HUGE success with both kids and adults. Kids liking the bright colours and silly characters, and adults enjoying its writing, wit, and long list of Parental Bonuses and Getting Crap Past The Radar. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie came out in 2004, and a second movie is to be released in late 2014. It should be noted that after the release of the first movie, series creator Stephen Hillenburg stepped down from his position as the showrunner due to the intention of ending the series with a movie finale, but some Executive Meddling occurred, and Nickelodeon quickly uncancelled the show. Seasons 4-present are being run under the supervision of Paul Tibbitt, which many long term fans consider to be a step down. There have also been multiple video game adaptations of the show; with many at the quality you would expect, and a few that are surprisingly good. The show is in a constant state of underwater bizarreness, frequently using the Rule of Funny (apparently a wood fire is possible underwater as long as you don't point it out). Funnily enough, creator Stephen Hillenburg has a degree in marine biology. Supposedly, he created a show about a sponge because he was really fed up with Small Taxonomy Pools.See Also:
