A long, long time ago, a [[Videogame/EarthBound Gigyas-esque]] monster of some description crash-landed in a metorite on a polluted, dying alternate version of Earth, [[ApocalypseHow destroying what remained of its biosphere]] and shifting its geological activity into overdrive. The humans retreated to what would eventually become the floating islands while mass earthquakes and volcanoes reshaped the earth into a shape unrecognizable to us, even when the magma hardened. The creature that arrived with the meteor drew power from human evil, and took a form representing it- specifically, the perversion of nature, hence the purple grass- and began to take over the dead world. It created the monsters that spawn in corruption to protect itself, and began storing power in the shadow orbs to sustain itself. This explains why destroying them summons the Eater of Worlds.

My theory is that Terraria is set a good number of years after Dead Space. Very few humans are left, but technology had advanced so far before then that it even resembles magic. However, most of this has been forgotten and the world has been pushed into a dark age. Eaters Of Souls can fly because they have merged with some form of flying equipment, much like the Necromorphs [[spoiler: from the Valor had merged with the Stasis units.]] The Eater Of Worlds is either very old, or constructed from more bodies than most. The Corruption is buffed when the game enters Hard Mode because the Marker responsible for this has been sealed in the same place as everything else unlocked by the Wall Of Flesh. It is somewhere in space, however, so you can't destroy it and get rid of the Corruption that way.

This could also be why the Zapinator counts as a Space Gun by the Meteor Armor's logic; it works sort of like the Space Gun (running off mana and shooting energy bolts), but isn't a magic staff.

! The Blood Moon doesn't actually affect female npcs.

The Terrarian is a misogynistic UnreliableNarrator. The unusual dialogue is a projection of his own warped perspective. He sees the women behaving seemingly irrationally only because he is fearful and on edge due to the Blood Moon and swarming monsters. He doesn't project this onto the Party Girl because he sees her as uniquely silly and endearing.
Sacrificing the Guide makes it clear that he's willing to see other people merely for how they can aid his own goals, suggesting an overall lack of empathy (if he is not, as others here have suggested, an outright EldritchAbomination).

Added a WMG about the Zapinator

The Wall is said to be the world's "core and master," and defeating it unleashes the ancient sprites of Light and Dark. The Wall of Flesh isn't just a monster that's tied to the Guide; it IS the Guide's true form. Like you, he once conquered Terraria and became the world's "core and master". By reaching the Underworld and summoning it, you're claiming that you're ready to take over his position as the world's guardian and master, and in ancient tradition, the only way to prove that you're ready to rule is to beat him in a duel to the death. Of course, much like you, he can just respawn when he dies, content to assume the role of a simple guide as he leads you to grow into your new role. Perhaps some time in the distant future of the setting, when things have quieted down and the world has been tamed again, your character will lead a quiet, unassuming life as a wandering guide until the next prospective hero comes along.

[[WMG: The Zapinator(s) are broken attempts at modifying a toy into an actual ray-gun weapon, and could be the beta version of the Space Gun.]]

The weapon's projectiles, while acting normally when fired, veer and change unpredictably on contact. It's possible that the person who made the Zapinator(s) couldn't work out the kinks and threw them away, and thus they traded hands until traveling merchants got a hold of them to pass them down... for a hefty price. The Space Gun is a more successful attempt, losing the unpredictable properties and reducing the energy cost at a loss of damage.

This could also be why the Zapinator counts as a Space Gun by the Meteor Armor's logic; it works sort of like the Space Gun (running off mana and shooting energy bolts), but isn't a magic staff.

I figure the overworld is purgatory, it's initially fine, with only a few points of the facade breaking with the Corruption/Crimson, the deeper you go the closer to Hell you are, The Guide is your own personal Virgil, The reason that in Hardmode the corruption/crimson/hallow spreads is because you are killing Hells best demons, and the Devil is getting angrier, so he is slowly taking away your "safe" areas, he can't do it fully because obviously purgatory isn't his domain, but you do immoral things, such as killing the guide in your adventure, so he has a little leeway after that.

[[WMG: The Guide ''is'' the Wall Of Flesh, and your predecessor]]

There's no doubt that the Guide is connected very deeply to the Wall Of Flesh. Throwing the Voodoo Doll into the lava will summon it. However, there are some subtle clues that suggest something more is going on here. The Nurse will get frustrated by him constantly coming in with lava burns. The Tavernkeeper doesn't like to be near him, because he has dark vibes similar to some of the things from Etheria. He knows absolutely everything there is to know about the world - even things that should have been impossible for anybody to know about, given that they've been sealed away for a long, long time.

form according to this theory.

In the underworld, where the Guide's true form emerges, the fiendish inhabitants are aware of the Guide's true identity, and have created voodoo dolls in attempts to unleash the Guide's contained dark power. It never works. The reason they never actually try to kill the Guide is because of fears that it would unleash a hideous beast. Unfortunately, that's also the only way to unleash the light (Hallow) that is necessary to fight the dark (Corruption/Crimson). So when the time comes, the Guide explicitly tells the player the only known means of summoning his true form. When his human body is killed, his dormant Wall of Flesh form emerges in the Underworld, attacking the player to see if they're ready to handle the increased difficulty. When the player inevitably kills the Wall of Flesh thinking it's a major boss, what actually happened was that the true Guardian died. The Guide still exists as an entity, as his human body regenerated by then (read: he respawned), but he no longer has control over the balance of the world.

Collectively, this entity is a god with great power over the world, and he has a duty of protecting it. To do this, he took the form of a human and founded the Order of the Guides, which is there to preserve lore and knowledge. He knows everything there is about the Terraria world (including every crafting recipe). One day, he sensed that Cthulhu was beginning to prepare to return, so he decided to bring a hero onto a remote island with few people to get in the way of your heroics. This is where you come in. You suddenly pop into the world in the middle of nowhere with an assortment of basic tools necessary for survival, unaware that the friendly guy standing next to you and giving advice is actually trying to discreetly save the world.

TL;DR - The [[StargateVerse Ancients]] colonised another galaxy, woke the Corruption up, which spread to all the other planets in that galaxy, so they sent down the Player, while giving him/her amazing technology to help this. Originally, it was colonised by the [[StargateVerse Ancients]], millennia ago. All was fine, until they awakened the Corruption, which then spread to every planet in this galaxy using the Stargates, forcing the Ancients to retreat to their spaceships, destroy the Stargates on those worlds, and drop down the Shadow Orbs, which are really tracking devices for weapons that fire incredibly large meteorites at where the Shadow Orb was smashed. Unfortunately, like everything else the Ancients did, that went wrong, and the Shadow Orbs didn't give the proper targeting data. So they sent down the Player, to try and activate the Orbs, which would allow the Ancients to wreak flaming havoc with their weapons, occasionally sending down a piece of technology here and there, to help you out in your quest.
