Because, ''really!'' [[spoiler: Mutant albino cannibals? Earth disappearing? An insane flight crewman setting himself up as God-tyrant? Getting stuck in hypersleep for nine centuries?]] That's got to seem like the most insane drivel the folks who slept through all the shipboard insanity have ever heard! Everyone's going to assume those two got head injuries during their pods' ejection and not listen to a word they say.

* The events of Event Horizon directly led to the creation of ODS/pandorum. We see that pandorum causes hallucinations similar to what the crew sees in Event Horizon, and it's implied that the 'evil' inhabiting the Event Horizon is everywhere, not just confined to the gravity drive. It's possible that the Event Horizon was salvaged and melted down so the metal could be reused. In that case, ships like the Eden and the Elysium were made with remnants of the Event Horizon. This would mean that the pandorum experienced by their crews is actually a result of the evil still possessing the metal.

** Possibly the strongest evidence that Earth really is gone, or at least has gone through some ''really'' drastic changes? [[spoiler: It's been nine centuries since ''Elysium'' set out for Tanis, the nearest habitable planet, and yet nobody ''else'' from Earth has settled there. (Assuming all of those 1213 humans came out of the cryopods, that is.)]]

** Maybe the actual message was "You're all that's ''best'' of us", only the well-meant message got garbled in the worst possible way in transmission. Sort of like how "One small step for a man" lost a word in transit.

It's known that pandorum is exacerbated by psychological trauma. Both ''Eden'' and ''Elysium'' were undone when members of their flight crews went crazy from this disorder. If anti-space extremists who didn't want humanity to leave Earth could set up a fake transmission, they could send each ship a phony message suggesting Earth had been destroyed, putting enormous emotional stress on their flight crews and triggering pandorum as an explosive-free alternative to setting off a bomb on board. They also tampered with the computers on both ships while the vessels were under construction, inserting viral commands that were triggered by the "You're the last of us" transmission, blinding the ships' sensors to Earth's continued existence.

Misstatement correction

*** Unreliable source, indeed! The previous post is absolutely correct: Earth is never stated to be destroyed. The wording of the message is ambiguous, as is its source. Assuming it's coming from some kind of mission control on Earth, "you're the last of us" can have a ''lot'' of possible meanings, from the purely figurative (the nation/faction/organization is about to be absorbed) to the purely literal (all other humans will be dead shortly) to anywhere in between. It can also be an overstatement, that while humans as a species may not be done for, that there will be no further support or information from Earth because they simply won't be able to provide any for some reason (global resource depletion, CME, etc). At the range the ship is implied to be at, the inability to detect an object the size of Earth with what would have to be fairly small sensors is hardly conclusive.

*** Or it was sent by another colony ship that departed ''after'' the ''Elysium'' did, and that realized they weren't going to make it. Hence, "you're the last of us" meant "you're the last colonists headed for Tanis", not "you're the last humans".

*** No, all we know (by the word of a lunatic) is that the sensors could no longer detect it.

\n** Mutation didn't happened to adult organism, but to their children and grandchildren. Also, I think that hunters sleeping in a core room, probably for generations, might have some effects too - radiation anyone? Maybe too weak for noticeable effect during one lifetime, but after hundreds of years of exposure, who knows...

Elysium launched in 2174, and Shepard was born in 2154 in both universes. Elysium's Shepard had no team or resources to draw on, so it was all he could do to survive as long as he did.
