The reason Big John was in that town is because he killed Bad Bad Leroy Brown
See, the rumor was he sent a Lousiana feller' to the promised land in a fight over a cajun queen, but that's just a rumor, it never came from him. Truth is, he used to live in Chicago, married to a girl named Dorothy. Dorothy caught Leeroy's eye, and they got into a fight.
There aren't many folks who could beat the piss out of Leeroy, 6'4" and built like King Kong, but Big John's 6'6" and 245 lbs. Big John had to skip town on account of Leeroy's mob connections, and ended up in a small mining town.
