Visual Novel: Mashiro-iro Symphony

Kagami Academy and Yuijo Girls' Academy are merging thanks to financial troubles in their district. It's at this point that we meet Shingo Uryuu and his little sister, among the students from Kagami joining in the merger. While searching for his sister, Shingo runs into Airi Sena. Little does he know that she's attending Yuijo, and against the merger. Now, Shingo will meet new classmates and have new adventures, and maybe fall in love.

Mashiro-iro Symphony, originally a Visual Novel by Palette, was adapted into a Fall 2011 Twelve Episode Anime by Manglobe and is currently being simulcast.

Viewers living in the US may watch the show legally at Crunchyroll.

Tropes in Mashiro-iro Symphony include:

  • Accidental Pervert: Shingo, more than a few times.
  • A-Cup Angst: Played With, Sana asks Ange to give her one of her meido uniforms. Ange replies that the outfit might be loose and baggy around certain areas and Sana's not amused.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Miu's mother. You have no idea.
  • Animated Adaptation / The Anime of the Game
  • Averted Trope: This anime seems fond of averting tropes at the last second.
  • Balanced Harem: All the heroines gets their fair focus of screentime and balanced focus. However, the focus shifts more and more towards Miu as the anime goes on, and she ends up being the winner.
    • Except Sakuno. She had the first half of the first episode and that's about it.
  • Beautiful Dreamer: Miu falls asleep on Shingo's shoulder after he tells her that Sana doesn't care much for him.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Shingo and Miu are a happy couple, and are implied after the credits in the final episode to have opened a restaurant together. Everyone else, especially Sana and Airi, are still dealing with the pain of unrequited love.
  • Bromantic Foil: Hayata is this to Shingo. Justified that he has an Arranged Marriage.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Ange, who says her mother is from England.
  • Caught in the Rain: Airi and Shingo
  • Caught the Heart on His Sleeve: Episode 6
  • Childhood Friends: Airi and Sana
  • Childish Button: Try to take out Ange's maid headdress, and she becomes a Cry Cute.
    • In the afterstory in drama CD she can maintain sanity in this situation longer.
  • Christmas Cake: Machi-sensei, who gets teased about it by the school principal in episode 10.
  • Class Representative: Both Airi and Shingo are elected in the second episode.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Sana towards Miu during the first few times she saw the latter and Shingo together.
  • Club Stub: The Nuko Club, which cares for injured animals, originally consists of only Miu and Sana. It's not until halfway through the series that it reaches six members and becomes an officially recognized club.
  • Color-Coded Characters: All of the girls have different hair colors to make it easier to tell them apart visually.
  • Cooking Duel: Sakuno vs. Ange over Shingo; followed by a back-washing duel.
    • Sana, when the Nuko Club releases a squirrel they had cared for.
  • Cry Cute: Sana in episode 10, after overhearing Shingo's Love Confession to Miu, which immediately stopped her chances of a relationship with him.
  • Cute Kitten: The two abandoned kittens discovered by Sana.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: At school, Airi's slowly opening up to the new coed student body. Outside of it, she was already a pretty nice person.
  • Does Not Like Men: Machi-sensei is frightened, though she is working to get over it.
    • Airi, in the school initially.
    • Sana, as well
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Sana tends to hit Shingo a lot, usually anytime she suspects he's thinking about Miu in perverted ways, or even simply spending time alone with her.
  • Dynamic Entry: Played with in episode 8. Sana is seen opening the door when she hears Shingo and Miu in the clubroom alone. However, when the next shot is shown, Shingo is turning around, just in time to get a kick in the face, invoking this trope.
  • Elaborate University High
  • Friend to All Living Things: Miu and she has the scars to prove it.
  • The Glomp: Sana does one to Miu in episode 3.
  • Hair Decorations: Every single one of the heroines.
  • Head Pet: Pannya enjoys sitting on Miu's head or shoulder.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Both Sana and Airi towards Shingo in the anime. To be fair, they did kind of "friend-zone" themselves with the way they act towards him, whereas Miu was nice to him every time they interacted, and had a set goal that he thought was good.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Sakuno is the tallest female character, despite being the youngest.
  • Indirect Kiss: Discussed when Miu offers Shingo the can of hot chocolate she took a sip from.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Both Sana and Airi in the anime towards Shingo.
  • Lens Flare Censor: A few times, special mention goes to episode 9 where the censor appears WAY before it happen.
  • Love Confession: Shingo does one in episode 10, to Miu. She at first thought he liked Sana, but he reassures her that he only wants to be with her.
  • Little Sister Heroine: Sakuno
  • Lonely Together: The declaration of every one of the main girls by the end of episode 11. Though some people already were pairing up Airi and Sana because of Sana's breakdown and Airi's help a few days prior.
    • In the same situation in game, only Airi and Sana are affected.
  • Love Epiphany: Airi starts to develop one at the end of episode 4.
  • Love Hurts: In the anime, both Sana and Airi seem very unhappy when they begin to realize Shingo likes Miu.
  • Luminescent Blush: Pretty much every main character at one point or another.
  • Meido: Ange, the "wandering maid" as she calls herself. Her mother is also one, according to drama CD.
  • Miko: Yutsuki Onomiya, exclusive to the PSP version of the game. She has a cameo near the end of the last episode of the anime.
  • Moment Killer: Pannya does one in episode 10 after Shingo and Miu hug each other during a Relationship Upgrade. However, it begins to rain heavily, and he notices the door is open with no one there. Its likely Sana overheard and saw them confessing their love for each other, and then quietly left to sob by the swing she liked to sit on at the park.
  • Nice Guy And Girl: Shingo, Ange and Miu
  • No Sense of Direction: Sakuno gets lost in the first episode.
  • Pinky Swear: Episode 9, between Shingo and Miu to curb the latter's tendencies of not relying on anyone else.
  • Pre Meeting: Sakuno and Shingo run into Airi before the inevitable meetup at the first day of school.
  • Returning The Handkerchief: Inverted between Sana and Shingo.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Pannya and others of her kind.
  • Running Gag: Machi-sensei is still single despite of being in late 20s.
  • Second Year Protagonist: Shingo
  • Secret Keeper: Shingo, Miu, Sakuno, and Ange promise this to Airi after they find out she's actually living by herself and is just barely scraping by, despite her persona at school.
  • Sensei-Chan: Machi-sensei
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Shingo, when rumors spread that he and Sana are dating.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ange
Ange: "It's also a maid's job to secretly help nurture Master's love."
    • Sakuno as well, particularly in episode 10. She drags Ange out of the clubroom to give Shingo and Miu some alone time. Hilariously, Ange is clueless as to why the two of them are sweeping a place that she's already swept, and when asked for a reason why, Sakuno's only response is "It's a secret."
  • Ship Sinking: In the anime, both Sana and Airi increasingly notice how close Shingo and Miu are getting as the series goes on. Neither one of them seems very happy about it either, although Sana attempts to put up some slight resistance to it at first. By episode 10 however, after witnessing Shingo's Love Confession to Miu, and her accepting it, she realizes that any chance either her or Airi had with him just went up in smoke.
  • The Stoic: Sakuno.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Towards the end of episode 9.
  • Student Council President: Shingo's Bromantic Foil Hayata is this to Kagami, inexplicably.
  • Team Pet: Pannya, the stray cat Miu found at the school.
  • The Tease: Miu's mother, who Shingo first meets in episode 9. She seems young enough that he mistook her for Miu's older sister, and jokingly flirts with him, much to Miu's chagrin.
  • Third-Person Person: Ange
  • Third-Option Love Interest: Miu
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In the anime, Sana is initially friendly to the boys in the school in contrast to Airi, who was quite opposed to them being in there. However, once Shingo starts spending more time with Miu, she suddenly stops being so nice towards him and instead becomes somewhat hostile and standoffish. This behavior inadvertently causes him to grow closer to Miu emotionally, as the latter never acts hostile to him like Sana and Airi.
  • Transfer Student Uniforms: Students from Kagami wear a blue uniform, in contrast to the white one worn by the Yuijo girls.
  • Trauma Swing: How Airi finds Sana after the Indirect Kiss incident, and again when Sana realizes that Miu is the one Shingo has feelings for.
  • Tsundere: Airi and Sana.
  • Twelve Episode Anime
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Sakuno; Ange has green hair.
    • Yutsuki has purple hair. See Miko above.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Miu and Airi in their school uniforms.
