** Some of the dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures inhabit unrealistic biomes. All dinosaurs require some amount of grass in their exhibit, but in particular the ''Ankylosaurus'' and ''Triceratops'' live in a savannah and the ''Tyrannosaurus rex'' in a grassland, although grass didn't evolve until just before the end of the Cretaceous, and even then only in India. Likewise deciduous plants did not evolve until long after ''Apatosaurus'' and ''Plateosaurus'' had gone extinct, and the giant tortoise from Australia, ''Meiolania'', for some reason lives in a ''tundra'' when Pleistocene Australia was more of a swampy environment.

An example is the Hell Creek Formation's dinosaurs, with the aforementioned ''Tyrannosaurus'', ''Triceratops'', and ''Ankylosaurus'' in the first game scattered around to different biomes when they normally all lived together, and the second game likewise portraying ''Tyrannosaurus'' as a rainforest animal, ''Triceratops'' as a boreal forest animal, and ''Ankylosaurus'' as a wetlands animal.

** The "Scarce Asian Animals" scenario in ''Zoo Tycoon 2'' requires the adoption of 4 separate Asian species [[TimedMission within a year]], which is a fair challenge in the vanilla game. However, ''Extinct Animals'' adds three Asian species (the aurochs, ''Protarchaeopteryx'' and ''Velociraptor''), all which are obtainable from the Research Lab right from the start of the game, and those three plus the blue peafowl (a starting vanilla animal) immediately win the scenario.

** In ''Extinct Animals'', permanently unlocking the quagga for adoption requires releasing at least one of every extinct species (except the [[SecretCharacter killer penguin]]) into the wild within a single zoo. This would be a monumentally expensive and time-consuming thing to attempt in a campaign or challenge zoo, except this can also be done in sandbox mode, where the player has infinite money and can freely purchase any animal at any time.

The ''Apatosaurus'' is '''the''' largest terrestrial animal in the game (the later ''Marine Mania'' expansion pack added Sperm, Humpback and Bowhead whales which are '''the''' largest aquatic animals ingame), however it subverts this trope due to very lazy developer programming- due to its large size it's one of the 4 most dangerous animals (the others are ''T.rex'', ''Allosaurus'' and ''Spinosaurus'') in the prehistoric expansion pack and it requires the strongest electric fencing but if it does escape the game will have it chase around human guests and eat them as if it was a predatory carnivore animal instead.

* BraggingRightsReward: In the second game:
** Completing the final scenario unlocks a shiny gold panda statue for use in all modes. But it's very tiny and guests tend to not notice it. If you're looking to satisfy their amusement rating, you're probably skilled enough to amass fame for bigger and better decorations at this point.
** The ''Endangered Species'' expansion pack does give you a worthwhile reward though. The final scenario is tougher than that of the original game, but completing it unlocks the Conservation Breeding Center, which helps endangered and critically endangered species breed easier.

* ColourCodedEmotions: Your animals have colored emoticons appear over their head to indicate their mood at certain times.

* ContemporaryCaveman: In the second game's expansion pack ''Extinct Animals'', you can place glaciers in exhibits to make certain animals (namely Ice Age mammals such as mastodons and saber-toothed cats) feel more comfortable in the modern period. Occasionally, this glacier will contain a frozen caveman who will gradually thaw out and then wander around the zoo as if he were any other human guest. All the cavemen have ''Flintstones''-style names.

* CruelPlayerCharacterGod:
** Allows you to be cruel to both humans AND animals, satisfying all of your abusive needs. Create one of every animal and set them loose in a zoo (which has an electric fence around the entrance) full of guests. After they virtually kill all of the guests in the zoo, they start killing ''each other''. Last one left standing is the winner.
** The winning combo: setting the T-Rex (any dino, but the ShoutOut is only really funny with a T-Rex) loose. The dinosaur expansion pack allowed the big ones to rampage through buildings, reducing them to rubble. What happens when he smashes through the bathroom? [[Film/JurassicPark Exactly what you would think.]]

* DomesticatedDinosaurs:
** In the first game, the expansion pack ''Dinosaur Digs'' let you create a Jurassic Park of your own, though the expansion pack also included several Ice Age animals.
** ''Zoo Tycoon 2'' has the similar expansion ''Extinct Animals'', but with a wider variety of other extinct critters besides dinosaurs.
** Notably, however, the dinosaurs and prehistoric animals will escape their enclosures given the opportunity and attack or eat any helpless human they come across.
* DoofyDodo: The second game has dodo birds as one of the adoptable species when the ''Extinct Animals'' expansion pack has been installed. They aren't dumb per se, but they are very cheap and easy to exhibit.

* DyingTown: Both games feature a few Dying Zoo scenarios, where you essentially rebuild neglectful zoos from the ground up. Special mention goes to the "[[Film/JurassicPark Dinosaur Research Island]]'' scenario in the first game's "Dinosaur Digs" expansion, which is presented as your typical scenario, but later when you "return" to the island in a later scene where all the dinos have escaped and you have to capture the dinos and rebuild their exhibits.
* EarlyGameHell: Can be this, particularly when it comes to dealing with your zoo's guests. You start out with small buildings that can only serve one guest at a time. As your zoo gets more popular, crowds and lines form, resulting in your guests' needs rising and consequently, their happiness decreasing. Eventually, you unlock fancier buildings such as restaurants and large restrooms that have unlimited capacity and do a better job and satisfying your guests' needs.

* EatenAlive: If you have the ''Marine Mania'' or ''Dinosaur Digs'' expansion pack, you can put guests in with the sharks or the T-Rexes, where they will be eaten. Sometimes the T-Rexes escape and eat guests as well, but only the male guests. Also, if dinosaurs or any big cat of any kind escape, they eat their zookeepers and scientists.

* FiendishFish: In ''Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania'', female blue marlin are large and fierce enough to pose a threat to baby pilot whales and leatherback turtles.
* FirstPersonSnapshooter: Several of the Challenge mode quests and Campaigns for ''VideoGame/ZooTycoon 2'' require you to photograph things in your zoo, usually animals or guests doing particular things.

* FlushingToiletScreamingShower: A [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIaZPTcRjmQ commercial]] shows this happening to a woman. Thing is, though, the one flushing the toilet is an elephant.

* GentleGiantSauropod: The original ''VideoGame/ZooTycoon'' game has ''Apatosaurus'' and the prosauropod ''Plateosaurus'' as adoptable dinosaurs in the ''Dinosaur Digs'' expansion pack, with the latter being a DLC addon.

* GoofyFeatheredDinosaur: Implied in both ''Zoo Tycoon'' games. In the first game, the ''Caudipteryx'' is the only feathered dinosaur and the only one that doesn't require reinforced fencing for its exhibit which makes it the most harmless animal of the dinosaur expansion pack. In the second game, the ''Velociraptor'' (which played the RaptorAttack trope straight in the original) is more [[ShownTheirWork accurately]] depicted as chicken-sized and feathered making it a 1-star animal which is harmless alongside peacocks and gazelles. In contrast, larger dinosaurs which lack feathers (including the ''Utahraptor'', aside from a mohawk crest on the males' heads) are much more prone to and capable of escaping their enclosures and wreaking havoc in the zoo. Subverted with the ''Protarchaeopteryx'' in the second game, which is inaccurately depicted as a vicious predator since it reuses the secretary bird rigging and coding.
* GRatedSex: In ''Zoo Tycoon 2'': Animals simply adopt a snoozing posture simultaneously (even from across the exhibit) in order to mate, as if literally "sleeping together".

* HideYourChildren: Played with. Children in the ''VideoGame/ZooTycoon'' games, although never actually ''attacked'' by zoo animals, will run away in a panic if an escaped predator comes near them.
* HilarityInZoos: You can create this anytime you desire. The goal is normally to keep both animals and guests safe and happy but [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential the potential to let your animals wreak havoc]] is there. Especially when your animals include ''dinosaurs''.

* ImprobableInfantSurvival: It's only to be expected that ''Zoo Tycoon'' would honor this trope, being a family game. It's worth mentioning because of how blatantly the Infant Immortality rule is applied: if predators escape or a guest ends up in their enclosures, they'll leap on and attack adult guests, while completely ignoring children. Hence, a runaway lion or tyrannosaur will charge right past a dozen kids to pounce on a grown-up.

* IsometricProjection: The first game and its expansion packs only. The sequels are all in 3D instead.

* LivingStatue: Among the hidden animals in the ''Marine Mania'' expansion of the original game are mermaids. To obtain them, a mermaid statue needs to be purchased and placed inside an aquarium. It will then break apart to reveal an actual mermaid.

** The second game subverts this by ditching the geological period classification of the animals from the first game and the woolly mammoth has been replaced by a mastodon in the ''Extinct Animals'' expansion pack as the token Pleistocene elephant instead.

* MisplacedVegetation:

to:

* MisplacedVegetation: MetropolisLevel: City buildings including skyscrapers and other items (water towers, highway roads, oil trucks, utility poles, etc) appear in the background of some maps in both ''Zoo Tycoon'' games. These cannot be interacted with and only serve as visual decorations in contrast with the other generic wilderness, except if the player hacks the files and/or enters debug mode.
* MisplacedVegetation:

* MundaneFantastic: In the original ''Zoo Tycoon'', use of the right EasterEgg can let you purchase and display unicorns, mermaids, Loch Ness monsters, bigfeet and yeti alongside your mundane animals.

* NoAntagonist: Being a video game about building a zoo, it doesn't really have an antagonist to confront, though at times you could make an argument for the guests.

* PaleFemalesDarkMales: The first ''Zoo Tycoon'' features the unicorn, which can only be unlocked by naming an exhibit Xanadu. The females are the usual white seen in unicorns, while the males are black with orange manes and hooves. When bred, they produce foals that have black-and-white zebra stripes.
* PeopleZoo: This happens from time to time if poor design allows guests to fall into exhibits. If the animals in such exhibits aren't dangerous, the trapped guests won't panic or flee, but will walk around aimlessly and bitch about not being able to find a bathroom or other amenities.

* SavageSpinosaurs: Spinosaurus is portrayed in ''Dinosaur Digs'' as a highly aggressive animal that will repeatedly attack the electric fence required to contain it. A T. rex will make short work of it though.

to:

* SavageSpinosaurs: Spinosaurus ''Spinosaurus'' is portrayed an adoptable dinosaur in the original game with the installation of the ''Dinosaur Digs'' expansion pack, which was released around the same time as ''Film/JurassicParkIII''. While it also has been rendered outdated and inaccurate due to ScienceMarchesOn, it averts the SpinosaurusVersusTRex trope due to being coded to always lose when pitted against a highly ''T.rex'' (which is the most powerful animal in the game, only the ''Deinosuchus'' having a chance against it). However, it's still extremely aggressive animal that and will repeatedly attack the electric fence fences required to contain it. A T. rex will make short work of it though.it.

Added DiffLines:

* SeaMonster: Expansion packs for the original game allow you to raise and exhibit plesiosaurs and Loch Ness Monsters. Not together, though: they eat each other's eggs!
* SecondHourSuperpower: Similar to ''VideoGame/RollerCoasterTycoon'', this series gives you animals that are fairly easy to take care of at first, and whose requirements to be satisfied are easier to fulfill. A few have a big draw (such as the lion), but most of the big draw animals tend to be after you've placed a few exhibits with animals that are easier to satisfy first.

Added DiffLines:

* SnowySabertooths: The first game portrays its saber-toothed cats as being tundra-dwelling animals (in the adoption menu at least, because ingame they prefer elevated hills made of grey stone terrain with very little snow), whereas the second game portrays them as preferring boreal forests.
* SocialOrnithopod: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] with the three included ornithopods in the "Dinosaur Digs" expansion of the first game- "Camptosaurus", ''Iguanodon'' and ''Lambeosaurus''. While they do prefer being in groups, it's also listed as being in "small family groups" plus they can still lead a comfortable solitary life if the player wills it.

Added DiffLines:

* TemperCeratops: Both games have ''Triceratops'' and ''Styracosaurus'' as purchasable animals. While they aren't as dangerous as the carnivores, they also pose a threat for the zoo's human guests and require special enforced fencing. The first game's ''Triceratops'' however deserves a special mention- in the base game it's an EasterEgg animal that can be contained with elephant fencing but when the dinosaur expansion pack is installed the ''Triceratops'' will have its stats updated to make it match the other dinosaurs which makes it stronger and more aggressive. Curiously this also changes its ingame model, turning it from a larger vividly-colored orange (and [[https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/293997832199995393/834801544561426554/Zoo_Tycoon_2021-04-22_10_42_51_AM.png way better looking]]) version to a smaller dull-brown colored (and [[https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/293997832199995393/834801533383213116/Zoo_Tycoon_2021-04-22_10_41_57_AM.png less pleasant to look at]]) visual design.

Added DiffLines:

* ToughArmoredDinosaur: Both the original game as well as its sequel have ''Ankylosaurus'', ''Stegosaurus'' and ''Kentrosaurus'' when the prehistoric animals expansion pack has been installed. They are dangerous to human guests and regular zoo animals however due to lazy programming they are also very easy prey for any carnivorous predatory dinosaur such as a ''T.rex'' or a ''Velociraptor'' which instantly kill and eat them if they are placed in the same exhibit.

Added DiffLines:

* UnitsNotToScale: The series mostly averts this. The animals are up to scale in comparison to the people and trees. The buildings are also relatively large so that it doesn't really look out of place when a guest enters it.

Added DiffLines:

* ZebrasAreJustStripedHorses: The first game inverts this trope. For some reason the developers made [[SecretCharacter unicorns]] "bark" like zebras instead of neighing. But oddly enough, the later added Przewalski wild horses do make accurate sounds.
