Time: [[TheFuture Eve of the 22nd century]]. Place: The city of Mega Primus, built built over the ruins of UsefulNotes/{{Toronto}}. [[VideoGame/XComTerrorFromTheDeep The last battle of T'leth]] severely damaged the ecological balance of Earth. As a result, several [[SmallSecludedWorld walled cities]] have been erected to maintain the population, with Mega Primus being the first. Aliens are at it yet again, this time appearing through [[HellGate inter-dimensional portals]] in a bid to take over. So it's up to you to use your resources as X-Commander to make sure that Mega Primus is safe.

* DarkerAndEdgier: The game moves away from a present-day setting in favor of a cyberpunk dystopia. The aliens are also much more grotesque in appearance.

* EvilerThanThou: The aliens are revealed to have enslaved the surviving Sectoids as livestock, which is worse than the discrimination the Sectoid Hybrids endure in Mega-Primus. Saving these Sectoids will greatly improve your relationship with the Mutant Alliance.

Saving these Sectoids will greatly improve your relationship with the Mutant Alliance. [[spoiler: However, the aliens have a more sympathetic goal than in the two previous games, trying to find a new home because their new original dimension was wrecked by a supernova.]]

* FridgeHorror: It is entirely possible that X-COM was responsible for the third game.
