A spinoff brand of the Resident Evil franchise, Gun Survivor is a series of light gun games produced by Capcom between 2000 and 2003. Unlike traditional gun shooters, which are usually on-rail shooters as well, the Gun Survivor titles allows the player to explore the game's environment freely, making them much closer to first person shooters.A total of four entries in the Gun Survivor series were released:
Resident Evil: Survivor (PlayStation) — An investigator named Ark Thompson gets trapped on Sheena Island during a T-virus outbreak and must escape.
Resident Evil: Survivor 2 - Code: Veronica (Arcade, PlayStation 2) — A reinterpretation of the events of Code: Veronica, except modeled as an arcade-style shooter, with co-op play enabled with players controlling either Claire Redfield or Steve Burnside.
Dino Stalker (PlayStation 2) — The only installment that is not related to Resident Evil, Dino Stalker is actually a Dino Crisis spinoff. Mike Wired, an ace fighter pilot from World War II, is transported to hyperspace in order to fight against time-displaced dinosaurs.
Resident Evil: Dead Aim (PlayStation 2) — A government agent, Bruce McGivern, boards a luxury liner called the Spencer Rain, owned by Umbrella and itself another site of a T-virus outbreak. (Developed by Cavia.)
Due to the fact that Dead Aim supported Namco's GunCon light gun, Bruce and Fong Ling from Dead Aim both appear in Namco x Capcom as representatives of the Resident Evil franchise.note They still qualify for Unexpected Character.
The Dark Id refuses to take it seriously, but then again, he doesn't take the game as a whole seriously.
All Just a Dream: The ending of Survivor 2 reveals that the events of the game were part of a long dream Claire while she was napping on her trip to Antarctica in Code: Veronica.
Bag of Holding: Survivor is one of the few games in the franchise which gives you a limitless inventory.
The Beautiful People: During his tenure at Umbrella, Morpheus became obsessed with beauty, spending inordinate amounts of cash on surgery and treatment, and after getting scapegoated by Umbrella for causing the Raccoon City outbreak, finally flew off the handle, used whatever resources left behind by Umbrella, and began plotting an absolutely insane scheme to rid the world of "ugly people" and create a haven for those he considered beautiful in Africa.
Boom, Headshot: All three games avert this; shooting zombies anywhere on their body has the same effect regardless of weapon choice.
Chinese Girl: Fong Ling, a PLA agent investigating Morpheus' terrorist attacks.
Continuity Nod: The events of Sheena Island from the original Survivor are mentioned alongside Raccoon City and Rockfort Island in the opening prologue of Resident Evil 0.
Colon Cancer: The full Japanese title of Dead Aim is Gun Survivor 4: Biohazard: Heroes Never Die.
Emergency Weapon: Survivor and Survivor 2 both give the basic handgun(s) infinite ammunition, though they still need to be reloaded.
Even the Subtitler Is Stumped: Sort of. In Dead Aim, everyone is understandable, but the subtitles have a habit of deviating from what anyone is saying.
Expy: Dead Aim was based on a rejected proposal for Resident Evil 4, with Bruce McGivern and Fong Ling being obvious stand-ins for Leon S. Kennedy and Ada Wong.
Frickin' Laser Beams: The Charged Particle Rifle in Dead Aim, the only weapon that can damage Tyrant Morpheus.
Gas Mask Mooks: The Umbrella Trashsweeper unit and their leader, the UT Commander. Notably, the Trashsweepers appear to be regular humans... until you encounter them and they hoot, shriek, and move in a gorilla-like fashion.
Gender Bender: Morpheus Duvall after he becomes a Tyrant seriously looks like a female, to the point of growing breasts.
Light Gun Game: The GunCon support was removed in the North American version of the first game due to a backlash against light gun games and first person shooters by moral guardians as a result of the Columbine shooting at the time (it was still featured in the Japanese and European versions). Played straight with the rest of the series.
Long Title: Dead Aim's full Japanese title is Gun Survivor 4: Biohazard - Heroes Never Die.
