''Kirby's Return to Dream Land'' (''Hoshi no Kirby Wii'' in Japan, and ''Kirby's Adventure Wii'' in PAL territories) is a game in the ''Franchise/{{Kirby}}'' series for the UsefulNotes/{{Wii}}, developed by Creator/HALLaboratory and published by Creator/{{Nintendo}}. While initially believed to be the cancelled [[UsefulNotes/NintendoGameCube GameCube]] title, ''Return to Dream Land'', is, in fact, [[http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wii/kirby-dream-land/0/0 the fourth attempt at making a home console game]] since ''VideoGame/KirbyAirRide''.

A trailer for the game was released on January 28, 2011, revealing new abilities, including enhanced versions of various powers that can each use [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBros Final Smash-like]] [[LimitBreak attacks]]. See the first trailer [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDOZzcobfrU here.]]

On June 7, 2011, Nintendo released a second trailer of the game at E3, which shows off more features that the game contains, such as more new abilities, and co-op multiplayer alongside Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Waddle Dee[[note]]aka Bandana Waddle Dee or [[FanNickname Bandana Dee]], the Waddle Dee from the "Megaton Punch" sub-game of ''VideoGame/KirbySuperStar'' and "Revenge of the King" in ''Ultra''[[/note]]. Also, the plot of the game is revealed: while greedy King Dedede and Waddle Dee are chasing Kirby for his cake, a gateway suddenly opens up in the sky, and a ship known as the ''Lor Starcutter'' emerges. It crashes, and Kirby, Dedede, Waddle Dee, and Meta Knight (who happened to be in the area) must help Magolor, the ship's captain, recover its parts and get it working again. See that trailer [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPx8-9TGFhI here]].

The game was released in North America on October 24, 2011, Japan on October 27, 2011, Europe on November 25, 2011, and Australia on December 2, 2011.
----
!!Tropes used in this game:
* TwoAndAHalfD: The first game since ''[[VideoGame/Kirby64TheCrystalShards Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards]]'' to contain 2D gameplay among 3D graphics. Unlike in ''Kirby 64'', however, there are no bends or curves in Kirby's path.
* AddedAlliterativeAppeal: All the levels but the last one, [[spoiler:Another Dimension]].
** This game is also notable for standardizing [[SpellMyNameWithAnS [=PopStar=]/Pop Star]] as "Planet Popstar".
* AdvancingWallOfDoom: The Sphere Doomer areas have you outrunning what seems to be a ''[[UnrealisticBlackHole black hole]]''.
* AlternateWorldMap: Halcandra, Magolor's home planet becomes accessible after you assemble all of his ship parts.
* AmazingTechnicolorBattlefield: Where you fight [[spoiler:Magolor's]] final forms.
* AmericanKirbyIsHardcore: After a brief break in the trend with ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros. Brawl'', ''[[VideoGame/KirbySuperStar Super Star Ultra]]'', and ''[[VideoGame/KirbysEpicYarn Epic Yarn]]'', Kirby once again dons angry eyebrows for North American releases.
* AnotherDimension: The portal that Kirby opens with a Super Ability leads to that place where you fight the Sphere Doomers for Energy Spheres, and later, [[spoiler:Magolor after defeating Landia. It's literally named "Another Dimension"]]. Magolor's homeworld of Halcandra is also situated in a different dimension to Planet Popstar.
* AscendedExtra: The bandana-wearing Waddle Dee, a minor character from ''Super Star Ultra'', is now a playable character.
* ArtifactOfDoom: [[spoiler:The flavor text of [[FinalBoss Magolor Soul]] implies that the [[CoolCrown Master Crown]] itself is sentient and evil, and takes over Magolor's body to channel its power. The Crown also wiggles about in all of Magolor's boss fights, implying that it's manipulating Magolor already. And it looks really creepy doing so. It also changes shape for each of Magolor's forms.]]
* BackgroundMusicOverride: The theme song to the super abilities are programmed to do this almost every time you obtain one, which is more obvious when you hack the game to use them within areas where they can't normally be used within (like [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2TH_oH2PsM the True Arena]], for example).
* BadassMustache: Mr. Dooter EX gains a mustache to go along with his higher difficulty.
* BarehandedBladeBlock: [[spoiler:After you break all of Magolor's protections with Ultra Sword, he'll attempt to block it with his hands. [[ButtonMashing Mash buttons]] or shake the Wiimote against his attempt, and Kirby then proceeds to slash him over and over before doing one final, truly gigantic slash.]]
* BatmanGambit: [[spoiler:Magolor gets Kirby, King Dedede, Waddle Dee, and Meta Knight to defeat the dragon Landia and take the Master Crown that it guards so he can rule the universe.]]
* {{BFS}}: The Ultra Sword ability, as seen in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YXN_0R_8WY this E3 2011 trailer.]]
** And it gets [[UpToEleven even bigger]] when Kirby delivers the final blow to [[spoiler:Magolor's]] first form.
*** To [[spoiler:Grand Doomer]], too.
* BigBad: [[spoiler:Magolor, tricking Kirby and co. to defeat Landia and grab the Master Crown.]]
* BigfootSasquatchAndYeti: Goriath appears to be a Yeti.
* BladeOnAStick: Bandana Waddle Dee wields one to attack with, and Kirby can get one if he acquires the Spear ability.
* BlackoutBasement: Several areas have you traverse through a dark room, with lit candles to help you out ([[ImprobableWeapon not only as a light source]]). Some abilities (such as Fire or Spark) can help you see in the dark, too.
* BlowYouAway: Tornado Kirby.
* BonusBoss: [[spoiler:Galacta Knight makes a reappearance in the True Arena. To a lesser extent, HR-D3 can only be fought in the Extra mode and The True Arena, not in the normal story mode or the Arena.]]
* BossRemix: The Super Ability theme is remixed into something more upbeat when used in the Grand Doomer battle and at the end of Stage 7-3.
* BossRush: Two of them. There's The Arena, which is a rush through all bosses in main mode, and The True Arena, which is a rush through all bosses in the Extra mode ([[spoiler:plus a fight against Galacta Knight]]). There's also the last level of Dangerous Dinner, the final segment of which is multiple copies of every miniboss in the game -- which you face after getting the Ultra Sword ability for a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown. The last level of Nutty Noon, on the other hand, is a tower filled with minibosses from the game (no Sphere Doomers, though), much like ''VideoGame/KirbysAdventure''. The tower holds Gigant Edge, Moundo, Water Galboros, and Dubior, if you're going through the main entrance. The hidden entrance contains Water Galboros, King Doo, Dubior, Kibble Blade, Gigant Edge, Bonkers, and Moundo.
* BubblyClouds: Nutty Noon, the fifth and final world in Planet Popstar.
* ButThouMust: The very first Energy Sphere is just floating in a wide open room, but you can't proceed in the level without collecting it. It also applies in the Extra mode.
* TheCameo: One of Stone's forms is a statue of three of the "[[FanNickname Dark Matter Trilogy]]" Animal Friends: Rick, Coo, and Kine.
** Stone in general is chock full of cameos. Wham Bam Rock from ''Super Star'', the Dragoon from ''Air Ride'', Meta Knight and Galacta Knight's wings and masks, the HAL Laboratory logo, Kirby's original 8-bit sprite, and a few others.
** The UFO enemy appears to reward Kirby during end-of-level bonus games, despite UFO being absent from the game.
** The UFO and Kaboola, the blimp boss from ''VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand'', appear in the background as bonus point targets in the Scope Shot mini-game.
* CanonForeigner: The Water ability, which made its debut in ''Anime/KirbyRightBackAtYa'' as OfficialFanSubmittedContent.
* ChestMonster: In a variant, when you encounter Energy Spheres in a PocketDimension, they will turn into a Sphere Doomer that you have to fight as a mini-boss. Once they're beaten, you can obtain the spheres. The fight with Grand Doomer also starts with you obtaining the sphere containing the mast, complete with the "item get" fanfare... which promptly gets halted as Grand Doomer appears and engulfs the sphere, starting the fight.
* CoolCrown: [[spoiler:The Master Crown that Magolor wants to rule the universe with. He says that it is a source of infinite power.]]
* ColorCodedMultiplayer: If having your multiplayer partners as characters with predetermined abilities just isn't your thing, then [[http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6087/6076607109_67cc9b26ce_o.jpg here you go.]]
* ContinuityNod: [[spoiler:Oh, BOY, where do we start with HR-D3? It refers to two bosses form earlier in the series: the HR-H/E, the boss of Shiver Star in ''Kirby 64'' (hence the HR part), and Mecha Dedede at the end of ''Kirby's Dream Course'' (hence the D3 part). This boss also appeared at the end of the second stage of the ''Kirby Mass Attack'' sub-game Kirby Quest. All of its attacks in its first form are modified versions of HR-H's attacks, [[FridgeBrilliance which makes sense considering Dedede helped Kirby in that game]]. Also, the way it TurnsRed is in itself a nod: while other bosses in the game Turn Red at 50-60% health remaining, HR-D3 has two full health bars, much like many of the bosses from ''Kirby 64''. On top of all this, HR-D3 is a recolor of the Dedede mech that appeared in the cancelled GCN ''Kirby'' game.]]
** Some of the levels in Onion Ocean use Kine's theme from ''VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand2'' as background music.
** ''Loads'', mostly to ''VideoGame/KirbySuperStar'' and its remake. In this installment of the series, the developers have referenced nearly ''everything'' VideoGame/{{Kirby}}-related. Now has its [[ContinuityNod/KirbysReturnToDreamLand own page]].
* CoolSword: [[{{BFS}} Ultra Sword]] takes it UpToEleven; although Kirby can use other objects aswell.
* CutSong: Subverted. The cancelled ''Kirby GCN''[='s=] trailer music can be heard in the game as The Arena theme.
* DarkReprise: [[spoiler:Magolor Soul]]'s battle theme, C-R-O-W-N-E-D, is one giant dark medley containing Nightmare's theme, Green Greens, the main theme, and [[spoiler:Magolor's theme]].
* TheDayTheMusicLied: A pretty obvious one in Nutty Noon's boss stage. You pick your powerup, go to where the boss should be, and...the end-of-level music is playing? But we haven't beaten anything yet? And there's the item we're supposed to get... When you pick it up, the usual ItemGet [[LettingTheAirOutOfTheBand music goes sour]], and [[spoiler:the prize turns into Grand Doomer]].
* DifficultySpike: Both worlds of [[spoiler:Halcandra.]]
* DiscOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler:Grand Doomer ''and'' Landia]].
* DiscOneFinalDungeon: Nutty Noon. Did you ''really'' think you were done with the game? [[spoiler:We still haven't even visited Halcandra yet!]]
* DiscOneNuke: In stage 1-4, if you get to the very end of the first room and touch [[InvisibleWall the rightmost boundary]] then go back, you'll find that a section of the stage has sunk down, revealing a hidden door. Behind it is one of the game's [[EasterEgg two HAL rooms]], with this one harboring four Copy Essences[[note]]Hammer, Fighter, Ninja, and Wing[[/note]] of advanced abilities that aren't supposed to show up until more than halfway through the game.
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler:While Magolor's survival was much up to debate, ''Kirby's Dream Collection'' confirms that he survived and made a HeelFaceTurn.]]
* DisneyVillainDeath: This happens to Goriath, complete with him [[GravityIsAHarshMistress looking down before he falls]].
* DropTheHammer: The Grand Hammer Super Ability takes it UpToEleven.
* DubNameChange: Magolor is referred to as "Mahoroa" in the Japanese release, which is pronounced similar to ''mahoroba'' (meaning wonderful place). The change was made to translate his MeaningfulName into the English language ("''mahou''" also meaning magic, which the "Mag" part of his English name also references).
* DummiedOut: There are various unused data in the game, including early versions of used music or different music altogether. There's also data for two unused Super Abilities, Super Spark and Super Cutter, the former with only a single texture. The latter has been speculated to be unused because it would have been too similar to the Ultra Sword.
* EasterEgg: The "HAL Rooms" are back, again accessible in obscure ways.
** Also, if the player shakes the Wii Remote right before the opening video plays, a different colored Kirby will appear during the opening cinematic and on the title screen.
* EdibleThemeNaming: Just like in ''VideoGame/KirbysAdventure'' and ''VideoGame/KirbyAndTheAmazingMirror'', each of the worlds are named after food (with the exception of the eighth level). [[note]] They are: Cookie Country, Raisin Ruins, Onion Ocean, White Wafers, Nutty Noon, Egg Engines and Dangerous Dinner. [[/note]]
* EldritchAbomination: The Sphere Doomers have this vibe to them. They live in AnotherDimension eating energy spheres, and that's we all know about them. [[spoiler:Magolor's second OneWingedAngel definitely counts]].
* EnemyMine: King Dedede ([[VideoGame/Kirby64TheCrystalShards again]]), Meta Knight ([[VideoGame/KirbyAndTheAmazingMirror again]]), and [[SixthRanger Waddle Dee]] are helping Kirby on his quest.
* EnergyBall: Flare Beam Kirby, who can create an orb of energy that can be remotely controlled.
* EternalEngine: Egg Engines, the sixth world and first world in Halcandra.
* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: Abilities that make use of weapons can often let Kirby [[SpinAttack spin them]]. In particular, the Sword can now perform a [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda Spin Attack]] and the spear can be spun around like a helicopter blade, making Kirby fly upward and hit enemies in the way.
* EvilAllAlong: [[spoiler:Magolor, who executed a BatmanGambit to get Kirby and the crew to beat Landia and take the Master Crown so he could take over the universe.]]
* EvilMakeover: [[spoiler:The Lor Starcutter gets one when Magolor powers it up to face Kirby and the others while riding on Landia.]]
* {{Expy}}: [[spoiler:Magolor, plot-wise, of [[VideoGame/KirbySuperStar Marx]]. Like Marx, Magolor tricks Kirby into fulfilling his evil plan and betrays him in the end. He also shares a few attacks with Marx, like the black hole and the huge laser.]]
** This is cemented [[spoiler:in EX mode, where Magolor's second form is called Magolor '''Soul.''']]
** [[spoiler:Magolor's EX version even uses Marx's briar attack, alongside the aforementioned laser and black hole moves. In all of his forms, Magolor resembles a jester, too, just like Marx.]]
*** [[spoiler:Magolor]] seems to reference other ''Kirby'' baddies too, though. [[spoiler:His first transformation bears a slight resemblance to [[VideoGame/KirbyAndTheAmazingMirror Dark Mind's]] first and [[VideoGame/KirbysAdventure Nightmare's]] second form, and his shadow ball attacks have as much variety and BulletHell characteristics as Dark Mind's star barrages. Magolor Soul's screen flip technique also comes from Dark Mind's bag of tricks. The spire move, before upgrading to briar thorns, as well as the Sphere Doomer summons are shout-outs to respectively Drawcia Sorceress's [[note]]from ''Kirby Canvas Curse''[[/note]] spire attack and Para-Sorceress summons. Finally, the eye that appears in Magolor Soul's mouth gives him more than a passing resemblance to Dark Matter.]]
* ExtremeOmnivore: Kirby was already a BigEater, but now he can inhale other players, even (for the [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBros second time]]) ''King Dedede'', to spit out more powerful stars.
* FeatherFlechettes: Wing Kirby.
* FireIceLightning: The elemental variations of Sphere Doomers represent Fire, Spark, and Ice.
** The three elemental Super Abilities are Monster Flame, Flare Beam, and Snow Bowl.
** Four Copy Abilities would qualify: Fire, Ice, Spark, and Beam.
* FloatingLimbs: Magolor [[spoiler:(in all of his forms)]].
* FourTemperamentEnsemble
** Kirby is sanguine.
** King Dedede is choleric.
** Meta Knight is melancholic.
** Bandanna Waddle Dee is phlegmatic.
* FriendlyEnemy: [[spoiler:In the secret Kirby Master video, Magolor, Galacta Knight, and Marx are inexplicably among the audience enjoying a very special Kirby Dance.]]
* FunWithAcronyms: If you take the first letters of each level [[note]](Cookie Country, Raisin Ruins, Onion Ocean, White Wafers, Nutty Noon, Egg Engines, and Dangerous Dinner)[[/note]], you get [[spoiler:"Crowned," which foreshadows Magolor's possession of the Master Crown. This is alluded to in the way that the game shows the alliterative letter in bold. The soundtrack points it out too: The TrueFinalBoss's theme is called C-R-O-W-N-E-D.]]
* GiantWaistRibbon: Grand Hammer gives Kirby a rainbow-colored one.
* GoldenSuperMode: When Goriath, the boss of White Wafers, TurnsRed, his hair stands up and glows yellow. This looks [[Manga/DragonBall familiar...]]
* GoombaStomp: This game allows Kirby to control a giant cleat to perform this trope on enemies. It's highly reminiscent of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3''[='s=] [[InconsistentDub Kuribo/Goomba's Shoe]].
* GreaterScopeVillain: [[spoiler:It's implied that the Master Crown that Magolor wanted so badly is this, as it is said that the Crown possesses Magolor's lifeless shell in order to create Magolor Soul.]]
* GreenHillZone: Cookie Country, the first world in Planet Popstar.
* GreenThumb: The new Leaf Kirby lets him attack with swirling leaves and hide himself in a pile of leaves. Like TAC's guard in ''Videogame/KirbySuperStar'', attacks pass through Kirby without harming him in that state.
* HailfirePeaks: Nutty Noon appears to be BubblyClouds mixed with FloatingContinent.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Landia gives you a ride during the UnexpectedShmupLevel]], [[SubvertedTrope though it was really]] GoodAllAlong.
* HiddenDepths: If you talk to Magolor after all the Energy Spheres are collected, he reveals to you that he acquired the Lor Starcutter by excavating it from the volcano where Landia lives, and that the ship is said to have a mind of its own, making it on par with legendary weapons like Kirby's Star Rod and Meta Knight's sword Galaxia.
** He also reveals that he was told everything he knew about Kirby by a friend, long before they even met. Some fans have theorized that said friend is Marx, Ribbon, or someone else entirely. [[spoiler:Maybe even Galacta Knight.]]
** [[spoiler:In the Extra mode, he outright tells you that Landia guards a crown that allows the wearer to rule the universe, and that Landia will not part with it easily, and that therefore you should defeat Landia post-haste, [[MostDefinitelyNotAVillain with a cheerful expression that could not possibly be sinister in any way.]] Of course, this is before the second time you fight him as the final boss, so nothing is truly spoiled.]]
** Furthermore, if you have all the Energy Spheres in EX Mode, Magolor gives more information. He adds that the Lor Starcutter was made by the same people who built the clockwork suns (most likely a reference to NOVA from ''Milky Way Wishes''). He also mentions that some enemies Kirby fought before came from the world where he comes from.
*** And on top of that, Magolor states that the Lor Starcutter, "the clockwork suns," and the [[spoiler:Master Crown]] were created by the use of an incredible power.
* HubLevel: Returning from ''Kirby's Adventure'', though this time they're accessed through a world map. The ''Lor Starcutter'' is designed similarly, though it's more of a sandbox in that you can check in on Magolor and use the Energy Spheres you've collected throughout the game to get abilities for convenience, enter challenge rooms, or play {{Mini Game}}s.
* HumanSnowball: Snow Bowl Kirby, who can turn into a giant snowball to mow down enemies.
* HumongousMecha: [[spoiler:When compared to Kirby, HR-D3, who is only fought on the Extra mode as phase 2/3 of the Egg Engine Boss.]]
** Your objective is to shoot these down in the Scope Shot MiniGame.
* InfinityPlusOneSword: The Super Abilities.
* InfinityMinusOneSword: The GameBreaker Copy Abilities, such as [[BlowYouAway Tornado]] and [[ShockAndAwe Spark]].
* InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons: Monster Flame Kirby, who can summon a dragon WreathedInFlames to destroy trees. [[spoiler:Landia also qualifies.]]
* InstantFlightJustAddSpinning: Waddle Dee can use his spear for this effect by spinning it rapidly above him, using it to hover for a little time. Kirby can do the same if he has the Spear copy ability.
* InterfaceScrew: White Sphere Doomer [=EXs=] and [[spoiler:Magolor EX/Soul]] have the ability to flip the screen upside-down during battle.
* InterfaceSpoiler: "Gee, I beat Stage 5-5 and I DON'T have all the Energy Spheres yet?"
** Also the fact that the overworld screen specifically has a spot reserved telling you you're on Planet Popstar. Pretty much a given considering Magolor even said he'd take you to visit his planet after fixing the ship.
* JawDrop: King Dedede's reaction to the final boss going OneWingedAngel.
* KingMook: Several of the minibosses are these, for example, King Doo (a large, yellow Waddle Doo), Water Galboros (a large Water Galbo), and Kibble Blade (a Sir Kibble with a more knight-like helmet).
** And later, the boss of Nutty Noon is the "Grand Doomer," a giant Sphere Doomer guarding the last Lor part.
* LegacyBossBattle: [[spoiler:Galacta Knight from ''VideoGame/KirbySuperStarUltra'']] appears as an extra boss in [[BossRush the True Arena]]. In this game, he cannot be fought anywhere else.
* LethalLavaLand: Dangerous Dinner, the seventh world and final world in Halcandra.
* LetsPlay: By LetsPlay/{{medibot}}, going solo [[spoiler:until midway into the first level, where he is joined by [=MyNameIsKaz=] and even later into the level, LetsPlay/{{pokecapn}}.]]
** There's also one done by LetsPlay/TheRunawayGuys, and another done by LetsPlay/BrainScratchCommentaries.
* LettingTheAirOutOfTheBand: Did you really think you were gonna get the Lor Starcutter's mast without a fight?
* LimitBreak: Large, glowing enemies, which when consumed will give Kirby larger, more destructive versions of their normal powers (i.e. Sword becomes Ultra Sword, Fire becomes Monster Flame). Ultra Sword Kirby cuts massive ropes with his {{BFS}}, Monster Flame can use a [[InstantAwesomeJustAddDragon dragon]] to burn down trees, Snow Bowl literally [[BowledOver bowls over]] obstacles on his path, Flare Beam destroys blocks and activates switches around Kirby, and Grand Hammer drives down giant pegs and [[ShockwaveStomp generate massive shockwaves.]]
* TheManBehindTheMan: [[spoiler:Magolor to Landia. Or the Master Crown to Magolor, if it's sentient.]]
* MakeMyMonsterGrow: Whispy, Mr. Dooter, and Fatty Puffer grow in size when they [[TurnsRed turn red]].
* MakingASplash: Water Kirby, who's actually a CanonImmigrant from the [[Anime/KirbyRightBackAtYa anime]]. It lets him slide on fire blocks and lava, surf through enemies, hit enemies up with a water geyser, float while firing a water stream downward and [[EverythingsBetterWithRainbows attack with damaging rainbows]]. Oh, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking improves your underwater bubble shooter.]]
* MarathonBoss: [[spoiler:Metal General EX, an already tough fight that's extended to four stages when he reveals the HR-D3 mech; thankfully, it checkpoints at HR-D3.]]
* {{Medley}}: The first miniboss theme (this one is used for miniboss battles [[spoiler:on Planet Popstar]]) is a medley of the Egg Catcher and Boss/Arena themes from ''Kirby's Adventure''. The second one (this one is used for miniboss battles [[spoiler:on Halcandra]]) is based on the miniboss theme from ''Kirby 64'', which was also previously used for battles with the Meta-Knights in ''Nightmare in Dream Land''.
** The music used for [[spoiler:the Item Challenge and secret HAL rooms]] is a medley of various versions of Green Greens.
** [[spoiler:The final boss theme, C-R-O-W-N-E-D. You can hear Nightmare's theme, Green Greens, the game's main theme, and Magolor's theme.]]
* {{Mordor}}: [[spoiler:Apparently, Halcandra is this.]]
* MultiStageBattle: Goriath did this by smashing the snowy floor after you hit him enough. It turns from snow to icy to both, etc.
* NewGamePlus: Beating the game once unlocks Extra mode (a throwback to the original ''Kirby's Dream Land''), where your LifeMeter is reduced by a third, the enemies now come in various sizes, [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros2 Phanto]]-esque foes are now added to ''every'' area with a key, and the bosses are harder. [[spoiler:Also, Magolor's OneWingedAngel form is now more powerful than ever, especially when you finally encounter Magolor Soul. And before that, Metal General EX summons HR-D3, the robot from the cancelled [=GameCube=] game and the Kirby Quest subgame from ''Mass Attack'', becoming a three-form Sequential Boss.]]
* NiceHat: A staple in the ''Kirby'' series. Bomb, Stone, and Ninja abilities have brand new hats, the Fighter, Ice, and Mike abilities have extra features added to their hats, and the Crash ability has now gained a hat.
* NintendoHard
** [[http://www.kirbysrainbowresort.net/multimedia/pictures/returntodreamland/npower6.jpg The Copy Ability Challenge Rooms]] are as well if you want to get the best score (though just beating them for the sake of getting the file selection screen to display 100% after the game is completed isn't nearly as hard). They can take a decent amount of tries to get a gold medal. Then you learn [[RankInflation there's a medal better than gold...]]
*** Let's not even get started on the [[HarderThanHard Item Challenge]].
** There are also the PocketDimension challenges in some levels that qualify, which have an AdvancingWallOfDoom, and the farther you get in the game, the more additional obstacles you have to avoid and the faster the wall advances.
** In fact, the entire Extra mode is NintendoHard. At least the boss fights are. The constant Sphere Doomer battles that you need to do [[OneHundredPercentCompletion to get all the Energy Spheres]] get on your nerves when they're all the EX version. And there's also Metal General, who literally TurnsRed, [[spoiler:and then does it again figuratively, ''[[{{Determinator}} TWICE.]]'' Metal General EX would probably be too difficult for most people if you had to fight him ''and'' his other two forms without dying.]]
* NoOSHACompliance: The EternalEngine levels of Egg Engines are dangerous enough to give the factory level of ''Kirby 64'' a run for its money.
* NoticeThis: Objects that can be destroyed with a Super Ability are marked with glowing stars. The enemies that give the abilities themselves glow brightly and the first time per level they spawn, the camera zooms in on them.
* OneHitKill: The super abilities are programmed to do this to whomever they're used against. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2TH_oH2PsM Including the game's main bosses as well, apparently]].
* OneWingedAngel: [[spoiler:Magolor, once he picks up the Master Crown, and again after being defeated once with an Ultra Sword]].
** [[spoiler:Metal General EX summoning HR-D3. And then when Metal General decides to directly fight you with the Humongous Mecha.]]
* OnlySaneMan: Meta Knight's reactions to Kirby and Dedede at the title screen suggest this.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: The Monster Flame ability, as seen in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQPkJ_CwWw0 this trailer.]]
** Also, [[spoiler:Landia, the four-headed dragon who attacked Magolor. It can split into four smaller one-headed dragons.]]
* OutrunTheFireball: You have to outrun an [[UnrealisticBlackHole EXPANDING BLACK HOLE]] in the {{pocket dimension}}s.
* PalmtreePanic: Onion Ocean, the third world in Planet Popstar.
* PaperFanOfDoom: Ultra Sword becomes a large fan on rare occasions.
* PlotCoupons: The five parts of the Lor Starcutter, obtained after defeating each level's boss, and the Energy Spheres, many missing in each level. There are 120 in all.
* PocketDimension: There appears to be many of them throughout the game, where a good portion of the [[PlotCoupon Energy Spheres]] can be found. [[spoiler:The final battle against Magolor also takes place here.]]
* PowerCopying: Of course, after the noticeable lack of the move in ''VideoGame/KirbysEpicYarn''. The new ones are Leaf, Spear, Water and Whip. The game also introduces Super Abilities, a more powerful version of the regular abilities that Kirby can use to wreck everything on his path and solve big puzzles. [[spoiler:Magolor's second form imitates the [[LimitBreak Super Abilities]] in the fight against him.]]
* PowerUpMount: In Co-op, anyone can be this to each other. You can even stack up all four characters to create a giant totem pole.
* RecurringRiff: Several, including the file select/Lor Starcutter theme, the music from the ''GCN Kirby'' trailer, the Recurring Riff from ''VideoGame/KirbySuperStar'', and the menu music.
* RegretfulTraitor: [[spoiler:Magolor is heavily implied to be this. The description of his [[OneWingedAngel soul form is]] "A sad shell possessed by the limitless power of the [[ArtifactOfDoom Master Crown]], no more than a manifestation of the crown itself". In ''Dream Collection'' he actually makes peace with Kirby.]]
* {{Retraux}}:
** The BGM for the Item Challenge is a retro-style remix of Green Greens, sounding very similar to the arrangement used in ''Super Star''.
** Some BGM are new songs in the style of ''Dream Land 3'' and ''The Crystal Shards''.
** In terms of gameplay, the entire game may qualify.
* RubberbandAI: The AdvancingWallOfDoom mentioned above will always be ''just'' offscreen, slowly coming into view, no matter how much you think you've distanced yourself from it. But if you are close enough to it, it clearly slows down, and it gets exponentially faster the further away you are from it.
** You can actually make the wall reel back by spitting stars at it. This is practically essential to know in later parts of the NewGamePlus, where the wall is faster.
* SadBattleMusic: Used for Landia, HR-D3, and [[spoiler:Galacta Knight's first phase]].
* SarcasticClapping: [[spoiler:Magolor, complete with stock "bravo," right before he picks up the Master Crown and goes OneWingedAngel.]]
* SceneryPorn: True to ''Kirby'' form, the backgrounds of this game are vivid, detailed, and colorful. From a bird's eye view of Dreamland to outer space itself, Kirby series delivers on this trope.
** The backgrounds in the "Looming Darkness" sections shown after you defeat the Sphere Doomers are ''hauntingly'' beautiful.
* ScoringPoints: Present in the challenge rooms.
* SeanConneryIsAboutToShootYou: You can tell AmericanKirbyIsHardcore when he has his {{BFS}} aimed right in the face of anyone looking at the (American) cover.
* SequentialBoss: The only bosses who don't simply have one two part health bar are the Grand Doomer (though the second part of the battle is not played in the Arena and he just explodes), [[spoiler:Magolor, and HR-D3. The last is even worse if you're playing the Extra mode instead of The True Arena, as you have to fight it immediately after Metal General EX.]]
* ShamuFu: Ultra Sword might occasionally pull out a giant tuna for its attack.
* ShiftingSandLand: Raisin Ruins, the second world in Planet Popstar.
* ShoutOut:
** [[Franchise/IndianaJones Whip Kirby wears a fedora]]. Just to drive the point home, the first level in which you obtain the Whip has you [[IndyEscape outrunning rolling boulders.]]
** Not only does Sword Kirby regain the SwordBeam [[Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda at full health]], it now has a chargeable SpinAttack! In this game, the Spin Attack hits targets more than once instead of a single time that simply does more damage at once like in its inspiration series, often making it useful for shaving off enemies' health, especially for enemies that are more durable. He also [[http://www.everybodyplays.co.uk/images/screenshots/852/Wii_KirbyWii_5_scrn05_e3large.jpg looks like Link]].
** The shoe powerup: invincible, can walk on spikes, and only available in certain parts of the game. [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3 Sound familiar?]]
** Just in case HAL Labs didn't make Fighter's fireball move a direct shout-out to [[Franchise/StreetFighter a certain fighting game]] obvious enough, one of the inputs to perform an instant powered-up version of the standard fireball is [[EnergyBall down, forward, 1 button]].
** Meta Knight keeps his Shuttle Loop and jab attack from ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl''. (HAL had a part in working on Brawl too)
** Also from ''Brawl'', both the Hammer ability and Dedede have a downwards drilling attack that comes from Dedede's down-air in ''Brawl''.
** The Needle Ability gives you a new rolling wheel attack resembling ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog'''s Spin Attack.
** One of the snow levels features multiple cannons (somewhat standard ''Kirby'' fare), although one cannon path features [[VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry a trail of banana bunches]].
** [[spoiler:Halcandra]] is a combination of the names of HAL Laboratory[[note]]who is sometimes known as "Halken," a shortened version of their literal Japanese name, "HAL Kenkyuujo"[[/note]], the company that made this game, and the alien name for Mars in Creator/CSLewis' ''Literature/TheSpaceTrilogy'' "Candra" means planet in Old Solar, and Malacandra is the Old Solar name for Mars.
** Goriath's [[Manga/DragonBall hair turns gold and stands up]] when he TurnsRed. And if that's not enough, he's got KamehameHadouken attacks, too! And when Goriath EX [[TurnsRed goes Super Saiyan]], he gets a Spirit Bomb.
** The Grand Doomer's second phase has a method of attack that is remarkably similar to [[VideoGame/KirbyCanvasCurse a particular shrieking ball of paint...]]
** The opening segment of the UnexpectedShmupLevel bears more than a passing resemblance to the first Gradius game, in terms of level design and enemy patterns.
** Magolor's Lor Starcutter's mast, during its battle in Final Dimension, has a picture of the [[MarioAndLuigiBowsersInsideStory Dark Star]] on its sail. The EX version has a picture of the Dark Star X.
* SlidingScaleOfVisualsVersusDialogue: The FullMotionVideo cutscenes have no dialogue... except for when [[spoiler:Magolor reveals his actual role in the plot]].
* SlippySlideyIceWorld: White Wafers, the fourth world in Planet Popstar.
* SnotBubble: One of Sleep's moves allows you to do this, waking Kirby up quickly and destroying nearby enemies who comes across it.
* SpeakingSimlish: WordOfGod states Magolor essentially speaks "Magolorese" throughout the game and that the subtitles that appear everytime he speaks provide translations to what he says. Indeed, it's actually possible to hear his voice in-game when he does so (except during a certain cutscene). It's mostly unintelligible aside from a few words like Kirby's name.
* StealthPun: Sometimes Kirby's Ultra Sword ability has him use a fish as a weapon. Get it? Swordfish.
** In the first level of Nutty Noon, the two main powerups Kirby can find in the first area are Whip and Wing. Whip gives Kirby a cowboy hat, while Wing gives him a feathered headdress that looks vaguely Native American. So Kirby's playing Cowboys and Indians. ...Get it?
* SticksToTheBack: Whenever someone with a weapon needs to use both their hands or play the goal game, they resort to this.
* StormOfBlades: [[spoiler:Galacta Knight can create one after he TurnsRed.]]
* SuperTitle64Advance: Both the Japanese title and the European one has "Wii" on it.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Since Meta Knight is an ally and playable character for this game, Metal General is made as a substitute for a "knight" boss fight, although he ends up having pretty distinct attacks. [[spoiler:Galacta Knight also appears as a more proper substitute.]]
* TeleportSpam: The Grand Doomer, Ice Sphere Doomers, and [[spoiler:Magolor's OneWingedAngel forms]] all do this.
* ThemeMusicPowerUp: [[spoiler:Galacta Knight's fight starts out with Landia's boss theme, but when his health drops by roughly half, his theme from ''VideoGame/KirbySuperStar Ultra'' starts up and he [[TurnsRed fights more seriously]]]].
** Whenever Kirby gets a Super Ability. Even moreso when against the Grand Doomer and all the minibosses in 7-3. [[spoiler:Averted when fighting Magolor, whose own boss theme continues playing until Kirby wins the BladeLock, at which point the music stops. This was probably because multiple Super Abilities had to be used and switching between the Super Ability theme and Magolor's boss theme would get repetitive.]]
* TieredByName: Almost all of the bosses and minibosses that appear in Extra mode have "EX" added to their names, in addition to looking more menancing than their Main mode counterparts.
* TotallyRadical: Magolor's speech. [[spoiler:Pre-EvilPlan reveal.]]
** "The Lor is a beast!"
* TransformationIsAFreeAction: Bosses cannot be hurt when they're in the middle of [[TurnsRed turning red]] when their health bars drop by half. Their health bars glow to signify that they're temporarily invincible.
** The action freezes while Kirby does his elaborate Super Ability transformations.
* TrueFinalBoss: [[spoiler:Magolor Soul.]]
* TurnsRed: Every boss does this when their health bars fall by half.
** Mr. Dooter EX and Fatty Puffer EX are both mainly recolored red (from light blue and purple, respectively).
** Also, the last series of bosses from Landia EX onwards (including [[spoiler:Galacta Knight]]) turn red when their health hits about 60%.
* UnexpectedShmupLevel: [[RecurringElement In]] ''[[RecurringElement Kirby]]'' [[RecurringElement tradition.]] [[spoiler:After Magolor goes OneWingedAngel, Kirby and the gang each ride on a part of Landia into another dimension where this trope takes place.]]
** The tradition is played with a bit, though. [[spoiler:Most ''Kirby'' games take the mystical item that Kirby was assembling over the course of the game, and use it against the final boss, who's usually a OneWingedAngel version of the penultimate boss. This time, you ride the penultimate boss, who's revealed to have been heroic the entire time, and the item you've been assembling the whole game ends up being turned against you as the Shmup stage boss battle.]]
* UnskilledButStrong: Super Abilities don't have much techniques compared to their regular counterparts, but they're all very strong, as they're meant to destroy giant obstacles.
* VillainousHarlequin: [[spoiler:Magolor's OneWingedAngel forms, even going as far as to give him a juggling attack and various uses of magical symbols.]]
* WakeUpCallBoss: Goriath is when the game starts getting harder. Unlike other bosses, he moves fast and attacks quickly; notably it's rare for him to actually be on the ground. He also gets some pretty powerful attacks after he TurnsRed, and the platform (as he crushes them one after another) becomes more uneven over time.
* WallOfWeapons: Ultra Sword pulls out an assortment of large swords and sharp objects to cut with, like a standard ''Kirby'' sword, Meta Knight's Galaxia sword, a scimitar/cutlass, a butcher's knife, and a kendo sword. If you're lucky, there's also a giant paper fan. And [[StealthPun a fish]].
* WalkingSpoiler: [[spoiler:Magolor is pretty hard to talk about without spoiling [[TreacherousAdvisor his true motives.]]]]
* WarmUpBoss: Whispy Woods, naturally.
* WeCannotGoOnWithoutYou: If anyone else dies, they can come back anytime if there's an extra life available. If Player 1 Kirby dies, then everyone must start over.
* WhipItGood: Whip Kirby, a new ability for this game. Aside from having mid-ranged attacks, the whip also lets Kirby grab enemies and then [[GrievousHarmWithABody throw them to a direction]] [[ThrowTheMookAtThem to hit other enemies.]]
* YeOldeButcheredeEnglishe: From Meta Knight's pause screen description:
-->"The masked knight cometh!"
