"And here... we... go again..."

Battle Kid 2: Mountain of Torment is an NES game made by Sivak Games, as the sequel to Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril. Like the last game, Battle Kid 2 is an honest I Wanna Be the Guy, minus the Platform Hell. Like the first game, every death is your fault, not the game's. It uses a ten-character password system (unless you're on Hard or harder), has the same Metroidvania gameplay of the first Battle Kid, and boasts "over 650 rooms, 25 enemy types, 13 boss battles, 42 music tracks, and more bonus features this time around."

The plot picks up almost exactly where the first game left off. After One-Hit-Point Wonder Kid Hero Timmy infiltrates the Fortress of Il'Akab, he finally manages to destroy the supermech. Although a majority of the ones behind it got away, Timmy does manage to capture one of them, Chester Donovan, and bring them back to Disch Corp, where Timmy's friend Dr. Tina Byers administers a Truth Serum that slowly drives Chet to madness, and he finally talks, revealing the contingency plan he had mentioned back at the Fortress. It is discovered that the other two people behind the supermech, Helga Kraftie and Ivan Mekanovich, are building a mega cannon at the Shoh'Mec Mountains, which Timmy must stop again.

This game provides examples of:

  • Animal Mecha: Lobsterbot (the fourth boss).
  • Anti-Frustration Features
    • You no longer have to kill yourself to get your password and (on harder difficulties) remaining continues.
    • You can access the terminal any time now. Press Select while paused.
    • There is now a map you can obtain after defeating the second boss.
  • Ascended Glitch: The final moonwalking Chrome Drone came from a glitch where Sivak accidentally reversed their display code. Sivak, thinking it was funny, fixed it and then left an option to have the Chrome Drones moonwalk.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Big Timmy, the final part of the sixth boss.
  • Bad Ending: There's two of them. With no Orrexium shards, The Bad Guy Wins and blows up Timmy's city. If you have at least one shard but not all seven, Timmy makes the core go unstable, obliterating himself and the rest of the mountain base. Both bad endings result in a Nonstandard Game Over.
  • Bag of Spilling: Timmy only kept his High Jump and Infinite O2 upgrades from the first game. Also happens in-game to Timmy, where a fake save point on the battleship steals all of Timmy's items and now he must reobtain them. At least you get to keep the Damage Amp if you found it back at the mountain base.
  • Bald of Evil: Ivan Mekanovich.
  • Big Bad: Again, Ivan.
  • Big "NO!": Timmy gives one as the completed mega-cannon blows up Timmy's city in the worst ending.
  • Boss Rush: An extra, timed challenge accessed via a password.
  • Bonus Dungeon: There are three of them, each accessed via a password given upon beating certain difficulties. All of them have bosses.
  • Black Bead Eyes: Timmy during gameplay. Also Ivan and Helga have this trope during battle.
  • But Thou Must!: You have to obtain the map in order to leave the room. Otherwise Dr. B will just keep annoying you to "check out that computer."
  • Checkpoint Starvation: There is only one working checkpoint per special stage. The checkpoint before that does something funny instead of saving your game.
  • Clone Army: The Doppelganger Constructor boss in the power station.
  • Continuity Nod
    • Timmy's line at the beginning of the mountain base tips off to the first game.
    • A room in the first area references the first game also, in which there are two Eye Snipers and a glass block.
  • Double Jump: A powerup obtained after beating the fifth boss. Later on in the game you'll even obtain a Triple Jump.
  • Down the Drain: The third main area out of seven, which is a sewer.
  • Easy-Mode Mockery: Easy Mode gives you three hit points instead of just one, and turns your suit bright pink.
  • Expy: Timmy is still The Kid without his cape.
  • Everything Is Trying to Kill You
  • Fake Difficulty: Averted. As a matter of fact, it's somewhat easier than the first game.
  • Fanfare: Plays after beating any boss.
  • Final Death Mode: Unfair difficulty.
  • Flip-Screen Scrolling: There is not a single screen in the entire game that does not flip screens.
  • Game Over: Prepare to be seeing this very often.
  • Guide Dang It!: There is almost no information on where the Orrexium shard in the mountain base is. The only hint is rather vague.
  • Hammerspace: Where else is Timmy supposed to put seven Orrexium shards?
  • Harder Than Hard: "Normal" gives you one hit point, infinite continues, and passwords to pick up where you left off. However, the harder difficulties give you limited continues, and no passwords, right up to Unfair, where you only get one life. You still die in one hit.
  • Haunted House: Or rather, a haunted shrine. Fourth area of seven in the game.
  • He Knows About Timed Hits: Dr. B tells you in order to activate the comm unit that she gives you before the Noob Cave, to press Select while paused.
  • Humongous Mecha: Any of the Ivan Mekanovich battles.
  • In-Series Nickname: Helga frequently calls Timmy "Rotznase," which can be translated to "snot-nosed kid" in German.
  • Invincible Minor Mook: The Razor Drones.
  • Kid Hero: Timmy.
  • Kill It with Fire: Ivan's second mech tries to do this to you.
  • Kill It with Ice: Ivan's first mech tries to do this to you.
  • Load-Bearing Boss: After beating the final boss you have two minutes to get out of the battleship, because apparently you destroyed the battleship's reactor.
  • Magical Mystery Doors: The Orrexium puzzle in the haunted shrine. The right path is found through simple math (that uses letters for some reason).
  • Metroidvania: The whole game has many Metroidvania elements. One big open level for you to go through, items for you to find and can't advance without, lots and lots of backtracking, and of course teleporters to get you around.
  • Multiple Endings: There are three endings in Battle Kid 2, depending on how many Orrexium shards you have.
  • My Name Is ???: Helga until she is named in the cutscene after the Noob Cave.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: One of the bad endings, where Timmy makes the mega cannon's core go unstable.
  • Noob Cave: There is an intro stage in the game that takes place in a warehouse complex.
  • One-Hit-Point Wonder: Unless you're on Easy difficulty then you get three hit points.
  • Oh, Crap!: Ivan and Helga's reactions when Timmy damages/destroys the mega-cannon's power core.
    • Also occurs with Ivan when you beat him in battle.
  • Palette Swap: The bosses in special stages 1 and 2.
  • Platform Hell: Averted. It is indeed very hard, but it doesn't troll the player every two seconds.
  • Plot Coupon: The Orrexium shards. Also qualifies as a Mineral MacGuffin. You need them to blow up the mega cannon's core and get to the final area.
  • Point of No Return: Entering the battleship after obtaining the seven shards of Orrexium. Also another one after beating the second Ivan fight.
  • Previously on…: The introduction cutscene starts off with "In the last adventure..." and shows Timmy destroying the Supermech back at the Fortress of Peril and arresting the Big Bad of that game, Chester Donovan.
  • Pun: The Gneiss Golem (first main boss) and Gnasty Golem (Special Stage 1 boss).
  • Retraux: Exaggerated by the fact that it's an NES game compiled and released in 2012.
  • Recurring Boss: Helga Kraftie and Ivan Mekanovich.
  • Respawning Enemies: Enemies will always respawn when you return to a room.
  • Rock Monster: The first boss, the Gneiss Golem. Also the Gnasty Golem in Special Stage 1.
  • Sequel Hook: Helga is seen safe and sound after Timmy escapes the battleship in the good ending, where she goes through a monologue that eventually ends with her threatening Timmy.
  • Shout-Out:
    • If you fail the "Simon Says" Mini-Game in the glacial caverns, you get frozen today.
    • Special Stage 3's fake checkpoint is a Rick Roll, complete with a "Never Gonna Save Your Game" message.
  • Sound Test: Accessed by a password.
  • Slippy-Slidey Ice World: The glacial caverns. Also certain parts of the cave system have ice sections.
  • Spikes of Doom: There's plenty of them, though it tends to use Spike Balls of Doom instead.
  • Stationary Boss: A majority of them.
  • Super-Deformed: Most of the characters, outside of cutscenes.
  • Super Not-Drowning Skills: Timmy doesn't seem to have an Oxygen Meter this time around, so maybe his Bag of Spilling decided to keep the Infinite O2 powerup.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: If you didn't collect any of the Orrexium shards, Helga and Ivan blow up your city with the completed mega cannon.
  • Timed Mission: In a sense, the first battle with Ivan. Take too long and his ice walls will kill you. Also, escaping the battleship. You have 2 minutes to do this. Thankfully, this is very easy to do, to the point you have be trying to fail.
  • Very Definitely Final Dungeon: The battleship that you must go through after beating all six guardians and getting all the Macguffins.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: The first two boss fights in the mountain base are relatively easy for Battle Kid bosses, but when you get to the first Ivan fight, he will likely catch you off guard the first few times, with his walls of ice that will eventually freeze you to death if you take too long, AND being a multitasking boss since you have to deal with the ice ghost too.
  • Walk, Don't Swim: Underwater physics involve higher jumping.
  • Wall Jump: An item obtained very early in the game, right before the Absurdly-Spacious Sewer.
  • Warmup Boss: The first fight with Helga Kraftie.
  • Zerg Rush: The first portion of the Doppelganger Constructor.
