Signal Firefly is an aspiring fanfiction writer who really only created this page to catalog tropes she's used in her own work. Her current obsessions include Metal Gear, World of Warcraft, Doctor Who and Homestuck. Most of her stories are centered around one of those series ( or some combination thereof). For better or for worse, however, most of it never makes it to the Internet. She also created the Groznyj Grad Living Novel trope page, and is absurdly proud of it.
Name is in no way related to Firefly, although she is a fan.
Characters
World of Warcraft characters
- Vian Sunweaver
- Blood Elf priest. Very, very gay, and more than a little promiscuous, but wholly devoted to the Light.
- Zhenya
- Troll death knight, formerly a warrior. More of a lover than a fighter both before and even after his death, and despite his death knight bloodlust is actually a really nice guy. He'll happily sleep with just about anyone and is one of Vian's best friends.
- Volenka Brightwater
- Undead rogue. Drowned herself after being infected with the plague to escape being raised by the Scourge. (It actually worked, sort of - the Forsaken found her first, and not until several years later. She takes great pride in the fact that she was never Scourge and never lost her free will.)
- Krelik
- Orc warlock.
- Natkata Swiftwind
- Tauren druid.
- Zarla
- Draenei shaman.
- Adamska
- Night Elf hunter (probably). A deliberately Flanderized version of Revolver Ocelot, he's a compulsive liar with a bit of an obsession with cats. And snakes.
- Enan
- Draenei death knight. Initially refusing to accept that he was no longer a paladin, it took a good smack upside the head from A'dal himself to get him off his knees and on the battlefield where he belonged. He's now Desperately Looking For A Purpose In...uh...Death.
- Devonny Locke
- Human priest.
- Kechalo Swiftwind
- Tauren shaman. Manager of What The Fel's cloth bank and Natkata's little brother.
- Pylene
- Goblin mage.
- Edward Silvestry
- Worgen rogue.
- Haldon Locke
- Human hunter. Devonny's older brother.
- Linnare Sunglade
- Blood Elf rogue.
- Nephriel
- Blood Elf paladin.
- Rafiki
- Troll shaman (of course).
- Anariel - A high elf priest and Vian's former teacher.
- Ardin - Anariel's current apprentice, who has a huge crush on Tirion Fordring.
- Adric - Vian's first love, killed by the Scourge in the invasion of Quel'Thalas. Eventually broke free of the Scourge with Sylvanas and her Dark Rangers.
- Tharian - Adric's boyfriend and one of the few male Dark Rangers.
- Vian's drakes:
- Mayagosa - Albino drake. Doesn't like to call attention to the fact that she belongs to the blue dragonflight, and so usually goes by the name Maya.
- Relarastrasz - Red drake. Hot-tempered and irritable much of the time, but a nice guy overall. Being in a relationship with Avidormu helps.
- Avidormu - Bronze drake. Bears a striking resemblance to a young David Tennant.
- Letharion - Black drake. Locked in a Masochism Tango of sorts with Darlindon - the kid just can't get enough.
Other people's World of Warcraft characters:
Metal Gear fan characters
- Ivan Raikov
- Older and Wiser, not to mention obscenely rich due to Volgin's surprisingly careful management of the Philosopher's Legacy. He's also Raiden's grandfather. (It's complicated.)
- Pavel Borozdin - Ivan's partner of 30 years, and way too normal for his own good. He also happens to be a moderately successful author and a fantastic cook.
- Vyacheslav Raikov - Ivan's favorite great-nephew (read: the gay one). A college sophomore and troper-grade nerd (though not actually a troper).
- Nikanor Malahov - The Ascended Extra boyfriend of an Ascended Extra with way more characterization than he has any right to. Also known as Vyacheslav's boyfriend.
Metal Gear extended verse:
- The Wellesley family - a wealthy upper-class family in Victorian London, extending through the 20th century and into the 21st and spreading over much of the world.
- Jeremiah/Lily Bonney, a male-to-female crossdressing prostitute
- David Charles Wellesley III, the head of the family in 1888, who rescues Lily from Jack the Ripper
- Rose Parker, an old friend of Jeremiah's mother
- UMich kids - students at the University of Michigan, where Nika spent his junior year.
- Tom Buchanan, a deaf paraplegic and Nika's closest friend in America
- Dave Buchanan, Tom's older brother. He and Tom are Lily and David Wellesley's great-great-great-grandsons.
- Natasha Valentine, Tom's best friend. A photophobic albino with a garlic allergy who is Actually Not A Vampire.
- Renée "Rae" LaPorte, a male-to-female Transsexual with dreams of being the next Beyoncé
Tropes:
Wo W Tropes
- Always Camp - Vian's father was a florist (and 100% straight).
- Adventurer Archaeologist - Haldon and Natkata.
- Anti Hero - Darlindon is a Type IV.
- Anything That Moves - Zhenya and Darlindon.
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny! - Most of the time Edward can keep his animal instincts in check, but if he sees a squirrel, all bets are off.
- Better as Friends - Zhenya and his first girlfriend grew up together, dated briefly as teenagers, but broke up when it got awkward. And they did stay friends afterward.
- Big Brother Instinct - Vian's two older children tease their little brother mercilessly about being "scrawny" (by orc standards; he's half blood elf), but if anyone else dares to pick on him... Haldon is also very protective of little sister Devonny, and even Zhenya has his moments.
- Bigger Is Better in Bed - Semi-inverted with Zhenya. On the one hand, he's on the small side for a troll. On the other hand, he's still a troll.
- Bi the Way - Zarla, arguably.
- Body Horror - Rise of the Silithid
(NSFW) was published in a book of short stories Vian unwittingly picked up in a Silvermoon bookshop. He had nightmares for weeks afterward.
- Canon Immigrant - Ardin originally appeared in The Sims 2 before eventually being incorporated into the main storyline.
- Character Development - Vian started out as an Expy of Raikov before developing a personality and backstory all his own.
- Child by Rape - Linnare, whose mother was raped by an Amani troll during the Second War.
- Chivalrous Pervert - Zhenya is somewhere between this and Handsome Lech.
- Daddy's Girl - Nephriel.
- Depraved Bisexual - Darlindon.
- Do Not Call Me Paul - Pylene's real name is Molly Propylene. Its only purpose is to rhyme with her twin sister's Punny Name, Polly.
Is it any wonder she hates it?
- Emo Teen - Letharion dresses like one, but averts the rest of the trope. Most of the time.
- Erotic Eating - Vian can eat a sausage suggestively without making men wince. Now that takes skill.
- Ethical Slut - Vian.
- Even The Lesbians Want Him/If It's You, It's Okay - Natkata will freely admit to being straight for Baine Bloodhoof.
- Everybody Has Lots of Sex - What The Fel has a (somewhat exaggerated) reputation for this.
- Fashion Dissonance - Just where did Letharion get blue jeans and Converse? Does it really matter?
- Femme Fatalons - Black drake Letharion has these in his otherwise weak and defenseless human form.
- Good Angel, Bad Angel - Vian can (and has) been described as Ivan Raikov's shoulder angel; Zhenya is Volgin's.
- Guyliner - Letharion, as part of his Emo Teen image.
- Honorary Uncle - Most members of What The Fel, once people start having kids.
- Hot for Preacher - A large part of what made Darlindon become obsessed with Vian was his apparent Incorruptible Pure Pureness. Whether it was a desire to simply be close to that or to corrupt it is anyone's guess.
- Huge Orc Tiny Elf - Vian and the majority of the men he's attracted to, most notably his eventual husband Broktan.
- The Immodest Orgasm - Vian. Merely embarrassing when he first realizes he's doing it; Squick-inducing when he finds out he inherited that particular habit from his grandmother.
- Tharian is even louder. Of course, he's a banshee. Adric likes 'em loud.
- Informed Deformity - Edward has a nasty scar on his left leg and walks with a limp in human form, both of which are impossible to convey in-game.
- Insistent Terminology - Linnare is a blood elf. Even though she looks just like a Darkspear troll. Totally an elf. Don't argue.
- Interspecies Romance - Vian and Broktan (A blood elf and an orc), Vian and Zhenya (a troll), and Zhenya and Volenka (undead human) are just a few examples.
- Keet - Enan had elements of this before he became a Death Knight. And it didn't stop then, either.
- Kissing In A Tree - Not quite the trope. Vian broke his arm as a teenager playing this one a bit too literally.
- Language of Love - Vian and draenei. Zhenya with just about anyone.
- The Masochism Tango - Darlindon and Letharion are caught up in one of these. Letharion insists he hates Darlindon and wants nothing to do with him (and he often means it), but he just keeps crawling back...
- Massive Numbered Siblings - Volenka is the third of seven children. New guildmate Pylene trumps that with eleven (including a twin sister).
- Mayfly December Romance - Vian and Broktan.
- Memento MacGuffin - Vian's bracelet, which belonged to his mother.
- Mentor Ship - Vian and his mentor Anariel.
- My Girl Is a Slut - Broktan is surprisingly comfortable with Vian's sexual history. That doesn't mean it's okay for Vian to sleep around after they're together, though.
- Nakama - What The Fel.
- Nonhuman Humanoid Hybrid - Vian's youngest son Dron is actually the half orc, half blood elf child of Darlindon and Krelik. Linnare is the child of a high elf and an Amani troll.
- Not Right in the Bed - In an Alternate Universe in which Vian is impersonated by a Darkfallen, Zhenya is the first to realize something's up... because the impostor is too quiet in bed.
- Omniglot - Vian is fluent in Thalassian, Darnassian, Orcish and Common. He eventually learns Gutterspeak as well.
- One Head Taller - non-romantic example in Vian and best friend Sereglin.
- Orifice Invasion - The reason Vian refuses to go to Silithus alone - see Body Horror above.
- Overprotective Dad - Though not actually a father, Haldon assumed this role after his father died when Devonny was just a baby.
- Platonic Life Partners - Vian and Sereglin. Sereglin's had a crush on Vian since she was a child, but has long since accepted that it's not going to happen; aside from the fact that he's gay, he thinks of her as a little sister.
- Promotion to Parent - Volenka, briefly, after her parents and older siblings were the first to die of the plague.
- Psychopathic Manchild - As a servant of the Lich King, Enan was driven by a desperate, childish desire to please his master. "Lookit all the Crusader skulls I got! Can we put them up on the fridge please please please?"
- Rescue Sex - Adamska fell off Nordrassil as a teenager and was rescued by a red dragon. Yes, believe it or not, Adamska actually did lose his virginity to a dragon.
- Right Through the Wall - Vian, generally overheard by Sereglin. Not that she was listening or anything.
- Romancing The Widow - To nobody's surprise, Zhenya was more or less planning to do this from the day Vian married Broktan. It's only practical when your best-friend-with-benefits marries someone he'll outlive by a few hundred years. Ivan and Pavel might also be an example.
- Sexy Priest - Vian.
- Sleeps with Everyone but You - There are a lot of people Vian will sleep with, but he does not count warlocks among them. Much to Darlindon's frustration.
- Sluttastic - Often used to describe Vian. Used in-universe by Letharion.
- Sticky Fingers - Lindon habitually filches jewelry and the like to "get a closer look". He can't help it - he just likes shiny things. And he always gives them back. (Okay, usually. ...Sometimes.)
- Straight Gay - Broktan.
- Team Chef - Sereglin. Vian eventually learned to cook as well, but she's still the best by a long shot.
- Transparent Closet - Letharion vehemently insists he likes women, but everyone knows he's not actually attracted to them. He just likes to use and manipulate them for the hell of it.
- Subordinate Excuse - Vian eventually ends up working directly for Thrall as his messenger/secretary/general-purpose gofer. Thrall, however, is by this point aware of Vian's crush on him and mostly just ignores it.
- Theme Naming - Zarla and her family are named after Metal Gear fanartists.
- Twincest - Polly and Pylene aren't really into each other (or girls, period), but they're perfectly willing to play it up for the sake of fanservice. Their older twin brothers, on the other hand, are the real deal.
- Uncanny Family Resemblance - Tharian and his cousin Linaren, whose mothers were identical twins.
- Unusual Euphemism - "Thalassian poetry".
- The Woobie - Vian gets this treatment a lot, mostly but not always in non-canon Alternate Universe scenarios specifically designed for that purpose. This includes the aforementioned Darkfallen incident and pretty much anything involving silithids.
- Yaoi Fangirl - Sereglin. As well as Firefly herself, but that should go without saying at this point.
Metal Gear Tropes
- Ascended Extra - Vyacheslav was just another one of Ivan's many relatives, until he turned out to be gay. Apparently that's all it takes to make a character more interesting.
- Afraid of Needles - Vyacheslav.
- All Gays are Promiscuous - Possibly. Vyacheslav went through a bit of a "slut" phase during his temporary break from Nika while the latter was in America for a year. Another possible explanation - he's a college student. They do that.
- On opposite ends of the spectrum, Justin is a shameless slut, while Adam is a virgin (by choice).
- Ambiguously Brown - Natasha's biological father was this, while her mother was a medium-dark-skinned European mix. Natasha would be ambiguously brown if she had any color at all.
- Asexuality - Natasha
- Bi the Way - Rae, though she tends to prefer men, and Dave, though he has no interest in actually having sex with a man, has a hard time resisting a strong, manly chest.
- Chick Magnet - Most (if not all) of Tom's friends are female or gay, and most of them are or have been attracted to him.
- Club Kid - Justin, although he at least has enough sense not to do drugs and to use protection.
- Deadpool - Tom's a big fan.
- Deep South - Where Rae grew up.
- Defictionalization - In a weird way, the Wellesleys themselves. They were originally fictional characters in a historical novel written by Pavel. Then Nika happened to meet some of their descendants. They were eventually retconned into actual historical figures, but it was kinda mind-screwy for a while.
- Different as Night and Day - Kevin is straight and doesn't put much effort into his appearance, while Justin is a bleach-blond Twink.
- Disabled Hottie - Tom. 7+ years in a manual wheelchair will do wonders for one's chest and arm muscles. The fact that he's also a dedicated swimmer doesn't hurt, either.
- Emo Teen - Rae (then known as Ray) used this as a crutch when she was still living as a boy, as it allowed her to have long hair and wear makeup and girly clothes while still being seen as male. That, and she had plenty of Angst to work with.
- Epileptic Trees - The story was originally conceived to explore the connection between Raiden and Raikov. It eventually snowballed to the point that Raikov became a minor character and Raiden was Demoted to Extra.
- Everything's Better with Chocolate - Nika's Trademark Favorite Food. Dave, tragically, is allergic.
- Experimented in College - Dave
- Fanfic Chop Suey - Two basic rules: author-like traits are spread out among various characters, and all are plausible in context (Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert are popular in Russia
; Firefly, probably less so.)
- Flying Under The Gaydar - Shockingly, Ivan's family had no idea he was gay until he came out in his late teens. No small amount of denial was undoubtedly involved. That, and it was The Fifties.
- The Glasses Gotta Go - Inverted: Dave's future wife Lydia originally wore contacts, until he convinced her she looked better in glasses.
- Goth - Natasha played this to the hilt in high school, milking her vampiric traits for all they were worth. Better not to mention it now.
- Grandma, What Massive Hotness You Have - Pavel, and (of course) Ivan.
- Hair of Gold - Lily.
- Homosexual Reproduction - Nika and Vyacheslav eventually have twins, using Vyacheslav's sperm and eggs donated by Nika's sister.
- Happily Adopted - Natasha and Adam
- Has Two Daddies - Natasha
- Hooker with a Heart of Gold - Lily, Rose, Lily's mother Mary, and Evangeline Lovett.
- If It's You, It's Okay - David fell in love with Lily as a woman (and had a habit of visiting prostitutes before he met her), but wasn't especially perturbed when he found out the truth. It's likely his interest in women is mainly aesthetic, rather than precisely anatomical. Bi the Way is also a possibility.
- Lipstick Lesbian - Mandy
- Loads and Loads of Characters - The Wellesley family. The ENTIRE family, from Lily and David's eleven children through to the present day.
- Nobody Over 50 Is Gay - Averted with Ivan and Pavel, who are in their late seventies.
- One Steve Limit - Averted with Ivan's family. Most of the names were taken from the same (very limited) source (specifically, school yearbooks), so there are a lot of repeats. The Wellesley family frequently reuses David and Lillian.
- Platonic Life Partners - Tom and Natasha.
- Please Dump Me - Ivan was afraid of falling for Pavel, so he tried everything he could think of to drive him away. It didn't work.
- Rescue Romance - David saves Lily from Jack the Ripper and, since she has nowhere else to go, takes her home with him.
- Same Face, Different Name - Pavel publishes most of his work under his own name, but writes gay-themed romance novels under the pen name Pyotr Martynov. (Necessary in his case as when he started writing, homosexuality was still illegal in Russia.)
- Self-Made Orphan - Rose's sister Violet, who killed their father after he raped Rose. (Their mother had died giving birth to Rose.)
- Straight Gay - Pavel and Vyacheslav.
- Supreme Chef - Pavel.
- Theme Naming - Ivan and Pavel are friends with another couple named Yuri and Pyotr Richardovich.
- The VJ Day Kiss - Although Tristan and Agatha (Lily and David's grandson, and Tom and Dave's great-grandparents) were not the couple photographed, they met in the same way.
- This Bed of Rose's - Evangeline Lovett takes Lily home with her for a few days, resulting in a child, Esther, who Lily and David later adopt.
- Transsexual - Rae, as previously mentioned. Conversely, Jeremiah/Lily is not trans; he still considers himself male, and lives as a woman only because he sees it as a safer and more practical alternative to being gay in 19th century England.
- The Twink - Justin
