Signal Firefly is an avid World of Warcraft player and character creator. This page catalogues tropes used in roleplay by the WoW guilds What the Fel and its Alliance sister guild Outer Heaven.

    Canon Tropes
  • Adventurer Archaeologist - Natkata and Haldon.
  • Anything That Moves - Zhenya and Darlindon.
  • Asexuality - Sereglin, her boyfriend Rowan, Volenka, Adamska, and Silvestry are all on the spectrum.
  • Bigger Is Better in Bed - Tallak isn't literally Thor, but he does have many traits one might associate with the God of Thunder. Vian is well above average, to Darlindon's frustration. (He doesn't use it to its full potential, is the general complaint. Comparisons to peacocks have been made.)
    • Played with (ahem) with Zhenya. He's on the small side for a troll, but that's still bigger than most. (Zhenya and Tallak are close to the same size.)
  • Can't Hold His Liquor - Zhenya manages to combine this with Never Gets Drunk due to his unusual physiology - while he doesn't experience any of the "fun" effects of alcohol, he can't keep down more than a few drinks. Whether the necromancers intended this or not, he/we may never know.
  • Character Development - Vian started out as an Expy of Ivan Raikov before developing a personality and backstory all his own.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu? - When Tirion Fordring incapacitated the Lich King in the Cathedral of Darkness, Vian slapped him in the face before escaping. This briefly made him something of a hero among the free undead.
  • Everybody Has Lots of Sex - What The Fel has a (somewhat exaggerated) reputation for this.
  • Formally-Named Pet - Lorel has a corgi named Lady Elizabeth Corgnelius; Vian has a Siamese cat named Mr. Bigglesworth. It may be noted that Lady Elizabeth's name is meant rather tongue-in-cheek (he usually just calls her Lizzie), while Mr. Bigglesworth was named by his previous owner.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel - Vian can be described as Ivan Raikov's shoulder angel; Zhenya is Volgin's. Zhenya has Vian (as an angel) and Darlindon (as a demon) tattooed on either side of his collarbone.
  • High-Class Call Girl - Mirienne and Gadreel were Black Temple courtesans before training as Demon Hunters. Pylene’s boyfriend Daniel is an escort.
  • Honorary Uncle - Most members of What The Fel to their guildies’ kids.
  • The Immodest Orgasm - Vian. Merely embarrassing when he first realizes he's doing it; Squick-inducing when he finds out he inherited that particular habit from his grandmother.
  • Interspecies Romance - All over the place.
  • It's Personal with the Dragon - Zhenya and Sereglin were never sure exactly what happened to Vian after Theramore, but they knew it was Malkorok that did it.
  • Like Brother and Sister - The other reason Vian never reciprocated Sereglin’s crush.
  • Love Epiphany - Vian and Zhenya were supposed to be Friends with Benefits. Vian didn't realize he'd fallen in love until he got serious with someone else. Fortunately, Tallak didn't mind sharing.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings - Volenka is the third of seven children. Pylene is one of eleven, including a twin sister, Polly.
  • Memento MacGuffin - Vian’s bracelet, which belonged to his mother.
  • Nonhuman Humanoid Hybrid - Linnare is the child of a high elf and an Amani troll. Helunir’s two youngest, Jormy and Anor’el, are half-Vrykul and half-dryad, respectively.
  • Omniglot - Vian speaks Thalassian, Darnassian, Common, Orcish, and Gutterspeak with varying degrees of fluency.
  • One Head Taller - Vian and Sereglin are a non-romantic example.
  • Panthera Awesome - Adamska has nearly a dozen big cats. One, Ivan, is a snow leopard large enough to ride.
  • Platonic Life-Partners - Silvestry grew so close to Jogu the Drunk during his time in Pandaria that he took Jogu with him when he returned to Stormwind. They now share a little house on the lake and have adopted a child together.
  • Polyamory - Helunir is in an open relationship with Sif, Fandral, Hogun, and his wife Sigyn. Vian is in a semi-closed relationship with Tallak and Zhenya.
  • Psychopathic Manchild - Enan, prior to Light’s Hope. Tends to resurface when he’s fighting demons, Scourge, or anything he can kill guilt-free.
  • Stealth Pun - Adamska's last name, Moonshadow, comes from a song by Cat Stevens.
  • Too Kinky to Torture - Gadreel was put forward for demon hunter training largely because the Shivarra matrons could not find his pain threshold.
  • True Companions
  • Unusual Euphemism - "Thalassian poetry".
  • The Woobie - Vian gets this treatment a lot, though mostly in AUs, rarely in canon. Things got dark in Mists of Pandaria, though.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst - To be fair, it's inevitable in a polycule with women named Sif and Sigyn. Helunir's not the only one who's done it.

    Human AU
  • Adaptation Name Change - Many characters have had their names changed (Vian to Ivan, Letharion to Levi) or been given surnames where they had none (Zarla Irievniy-Moon).
  • Gay Guy Seeks Popular Jock - Avi and Reilly, though they’re both bisexual, and Gender Flipped with Maya (also bi) and her cheerleader girlfriend.
  • Happily Adopted - Linnare, in contrast to her elf counterpart.
  • High School AU - For the dragon kids. The adults are still adults.
  • Sue Donym - Reilly Strauss, Maya Costa, Brock Tanner.
