* ActorAllusion: Malcolm's office is referred to as "The Lair of the White Worm" in Series 1. Creator/BramStoker's lesser known horror novel, ''Literature/TheLairOfTheWhiteWorm'', received [[Film/TheLairOfTheWhiteWorm a loose modern-day adaptation in 1988]] and starred--yep, you guessed it --Peter Capaldi.
** Terri is referred to as "Nurse Ratched" by Fergus and Adam at one point. Joanna Scanlan played a Nurse Ratched {{Expy}} in an episode of ''{{Series/Spaced}}'' which contained a WholePlotReference to ''OneFlewOverTheCuckoosNest''.
** Obviously not deliberate, but since Peter Capaldi was cast as the [[Series/DoctorWho Twelfth Doctor]], it's become extremely retroactively funny how often Malcolm's rants involve time travel and other science fiction tropes.
*** Even more coincidentally, in one of the DVD commentaries, the cast jokes about Capaldi someday being cast as the next Doctor.
* BeamMeUpScotty: Malcolm's first insult in the whole show is "He's as useless as a marzipan dildo", not "He's about as much use as a marzipan dildo".
* ButIPlayOneOnTV:
** Rebecca Front is baffled at how playing a fictional minister has brought her a flood of requests to appear on news shows [[http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/may/16/television-current-affairs-political-comedy as a political pundit]]. Similarly, Peter Capaldi was asked to interview Creator/AlastairCampbell in the style of Malcolm Tucker but had to refuse on the grounds that Malcolm is a fictional character and that he'd need backup from eight writers.
** Peter Capaldi gets fans stopping him the street with [[TooKinkyToTorture requests to tell them to fuck off]]: [[http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2009/oct/17/peter-capaldi-malcolm-tucker-tv "...and sometimes I mean it"]].
* CastingGag: Armando Iannucci admitted he cast Tom Hollander as Cal "The Fucker" Richards partly as an in-joke for fans who'd seen him playing Simon Foster in ''Film/InTheLoop''.
* TheDanza: Phil Smith is played by Will Smith.
** Sam Cassidy, played by Samantha Harrington.
* EnforcedMethodActing: For the enquiry episode, the cast were given no rehearsal or preparation before filming. Furthermore, there were no opportunities for the actors to talk to one another between re-shoots, and were kept separate from the "witnesses", like an actual enquiry.
* ForeignRemake: In 2006, ABC ordered a pilot for an American version of ''The Thick of It'' starring Oliver Platt. By most accounts it was terrible and consequently was never picked up. ''Series/{{Veep}}'' fared much better, though it's more of a SpiritualSuccessor than direct remake.
* LifeImitatesArt: [[http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/tvandradioblog/2010/apr/29/gordon-brown-bigotgate-thick-of-it Scarily often in UK politics]].
* PeripheryDemographic: Peter Capaldi plays the Doctor on TV in ''Series/DoctorWho'', and Alex Macqueen plays the Master on audio in AudioPlay/BigFinishDoctorWho. Since Doctor/Master is the most popular ''Doctor Who'' slash pairing, ''a lot'' of ''Series/DoctorWho'' slash fans have turned to ''The Thick of It'' to see both men getting all up in each other's faces.
* RoleEndingMisdemeanor: In 2005 Chris Langham was charged with downloading child pornography. Rather than make a full second series without him, the producers made two hour-long specials for which they [[PutOnABus put him on a bus]], leaving the door open for him to return if he was found not guilty. He was found guilty at his 2007 trial and served 15 weeks in prison, and his character Hugh Abbott disappeared from the show never to return.
