Trivia / The Nutty Professor

  • AFI's 100 Years… 100 Laughs: #99
  • Acting for Two: In the original, Jerry Lewis plays the lead, which is sort of two separate characters who happen to share a body that changes a little between the two of them.
    • In the 1996 film, Eddie Murphy plays the lead. He also plays the alternate persona. And a white celebrity fitness instructor... And his entire family (barring one child).
  • Career Resurrection: The 1996 remake was Eddie Murphy's comeback after years of decline.
  • The Danza: Stella Stevens as Stella Purdy in the original film.
  • Dawson Casting: Med Flory, who played the belligerent football player/student in the 1963 film, was old enough to be a recently-retired NFL player at the time the film was made. He was 36.
  • Disowned Adaptation: Jerry Lewis was supportive of Eddie Murphy's remake until he saw how much Toilet Humor there was. However, he would change his mind about it by 2009.
  • Reality Subtext: Siskel and Ebert noted that the film came off a bit like an apology from Murphy for much of his recent work, with Buddy Love being the typical unsympathetic character he'd spent a lot of time playing, while Professor Klump is a more likable character that people want to see more of.
  • Self-Adaptation: As of 2012, comedian Jerry Lewis has brought his original version of The Nutty Professor to Broadway; as well, as managing a CGI-animated sequel/remake to the original, produced exclusively for DVD.
  • Throw It In: Much of the dialogue between Eddie Murphy and Dave Chappelle was improvised.
