Trivia / The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack

Go To

  • Adored by the Network: In its first season, to the point that from the moment it premiered Cartoon Network started airing the show multiple times per day, every day of the week, despite that there was only one episode. The overexposure may have played a hand in CN later losing interest in the show.
  • Creator Backlash: The reason why a Laugh Track/"drawn in front of a live studio audience" bit is used in the episodes "Please Retire" and "Under the Sea Monster" is because Thurop Van Orman felt that they weren't the strongest of the episodes.
    • Whilst many of the crewmembers on Flapjack such as Patrick McHale and Pendleton Ward have spoken fondly about their time working on the series, others like Alex Hirsch and Ghostshrimp have been more openly critical; the former felt that the show's Depending on the Writer approach to storytelling and Off-Model animation made it unfocused and distracting, whilst the latter - a freelancer who was unfamiliar with the studio environment - found the work ethic in some of the staffmembers to be sloppy and unprofessional, and a poor reception to one of his pitches led to him being axed from the show.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: The Dock Hag is voiced by Daran Norris, Lady Nickelbottoms by Jeff Glen Bennett, and Dr. Barber's mother by Kevin Michael Richardson.
  • Descended Creator:
    • Thurop Van Orman voices the main character Flapjack.
    • Creative director J.G. Quintel appears as a live-action captain in the short "Captain and Toeneil", miming to Jeff Bennett's voice-over.
  • Executive Meddling: Due to the global economic crisis, the budget for the final season was slashed, hence why only six half-hours were produced. However, the rest of the funding went towards making the first season of Regular Show.
  • Invisible Advertising: Like most of the animated series left on Cartoon Network during the infamous CN Real era, this show was hardly advertised after its first season (outside of appearing in advertisements for the Har Har Tharsdays and Monday Nights blocks). There wasn't even an advertising of its Series Finale, not even as a new episode.
  • The Other Darrin: In the Brazilian dub, Flapjack was originally voiced by Gustavo Pereira, before later being voiced by Alexandre Moreno. Also combined with The Other Marty, as CN had Moreno redub the episodes with Pereira's voice, most likely for consistance.
  • Production Posse: Thurop recruited several of his former Camp Lazlo crewmates to work with him on Flapjack, including J.G. Quintel as creative director, Kent Osborne as head writer, voice actors Steve Little and Jeff Bennett, storyboard artists John Infantino and Mike Roth, and designer Paula Spence as art director.
  • Screwed by the Network: The show's timeslot changed several times over the course of its run, it rarely, if ever, got any reruns, and as mentioned on the main page, unless you subscribed to Thurop's DeviantArt account, you wouldn't've known when the Series Finale aired!
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Paul Reubens, aka Pee-Wee Herman, was originally supposed to voice Flapjack, but he never came to the recordings, so Thurop stepped in to record lines.
    • Bubbie was originally designed as a steampunk-ish whale submarine. This concept would later be reused in "Several Leagues Under the Sea" as the inventor's submarine.
    • The original show bible featured an unused character called Starshine Silvar, a mermaid who would have served as the sheriff of Stormalong's police force. However, she was somewhat retooled as the Skymaid in the episode "Gone Wishin'". It also featured a pair of sailors known as The Wise Crackers, whose only main appearance was in the first episode "Several Leagues Under the Sea".
