* CreatorBacklash: Creator/ChristopherLee was not happy with the second movie. When he landed a role in ''Film/Gremlins2TheNewBatch'', Lee actually apologized to Creator/JoeDante.
* DawsonCasting: Robert Picardo was 28 when he played the "kid" Eddie, though it is unclear just how old Eddie actually is.
* DuelingMovies: Set against ''Film/AnAmericanWerewolfInLondon''. Hilariously, though it probably wasn't intentional, the two movies' examples of lycanthropy are entirely different. In ''Howling'', the change is by choice regardless of the moon or time of day, the resulting werewolf is chiefly a biped, the user still has control over themselves; and the only way to kill them is with silver. In ''American Werewolf in London'', the change is involuntarily invoked by the full moon, the werewolf walks on all fours, the user has no control over themselves; and regular weapons can kill them.
* FranchiseKiller: ''Howling VII: New Moon Rising'' effectively killed the franchise for sixteen years until 2011 when the series was rebooted.
* NoBudget: Though the exact budget of ''New Moon Rising'' isn't known, clues to just how minimal it was are the fact that it was shot on video, and only had four actual actors (one of whom was also the writer-producer-director-editor-accountant, and another of whom was returning from ''IV'') with all the other actors being just random townsfolk playing themselves. In addition, about a quarter of the film is stock footage from ''IV'' and ''V'', and another big chunk is {{Padding}} consisting of line dancing and people sitting around drinking. Then there's the copious level of SpecialEffectFailure in the roughly thirty seconds that we see the film's werewolf...
* PlayingAgainstType: Creator/ChristopherLee as heroic occult expert Stefan Crosscoe in ''The Howling II''.
* TypeCasting: Dee Wallace as yet another horror victim.
