  • Recycled Set: The western street set seen in the film was also used in The Ox-Bow Incident.
  • Referenced by...: Bob Dylan's 1986 song "Brownsville Girl" (which he co-wrote with Sam Shepard) is an 11-minute long "Shaggy Dog" Story, but it's framed by references to this film.
Well, there was this movie I seen one time
About a man riding 'cross the desert and it starred Gregory Peck
He was shot down by a hungry kid trying to make a name for himself
The townspeople wanted to crush that kid down and string him up by the neck
  • Uncredited Role: Roger Corman was a script reader at Fox, and advised that this should go straight into production. He also claims to have made contributions and adjustments to the screenplay, but has never been credited.
  • What Could Have Been: The film rights were originally purchased by Columbia Pictures, which offered the Jimmy Ringo role to John Wayne. Wayne turned it down, despite having expressed a strong desire to play the part, because of his longstanding hatred for Columbia's president, Harry Cohn. Columbia sold the rights to Twentieth Century Fox, where the role went to Gregory Peck. Clark Gable was also considered.
  • Working Title: The Big Gun.
