This rewrite isn't official, so I don't think it belongs here. It's essentially a glorified fanfic.


* In recent years, the second part of the story was rewritten to give both sides a [[https://www.topherpayne.com/giving-tree better ending]]. The tree put its foot down upon the boy's demand for a house, reminding him that their friendship was supposed to be a two-way street. The boy feels guilty for only using the tree for his own needs, and the two study together and form their own business selling apple pies. Thus the tree is able to live and befriend the boy's kids and later his grandkids for many years to come, and is happy.
