Trivia / The Brown Bunny

Go To

  • Amateur Cast: Neither Anna Vareschi nor Elizabeth Blake, both in the film, were professional actresses.
  • Box Office Bomb: The film cost $10 million to make; its total box office and DVD sales, combined, came out to $374,000.
  • Copiously Credited Creator: Directed by, written by, produced by, edited by and starring Vincent Gallo.
  • Creator Killer: Gallo had earned a lot of indie cred for Buffalo '66. This film, however, flopped and was most notable for the controversy and bad press its Cannes cut received. Gallo did not make another movie for seven years, and his follow-up was completely ignored by the film industry and never widely released.
  • The Other Marty: Both Winona Ryder and Kirsten Dunst were already on the set, shooting scenes, when director/star Vincent Gallo fired them from the project. Gallo revealed this during a press conference in Cannes 2003. They were originally cast as Rose and Violet, respectively.
  • Star-Derailing Role: Vincent Gallo's career stalled following the film's failure, which was worsened by his hostility towards critics (most notoriously getting caught into a vicious war of words with Roger Ebert). Aside from playing the lead in Tetro by Francis Ford Coppola, he hasn't starred in any major projects since 2009.
