Trivia / Surf's Up

• All-Star Cast: Shia LaBeouf as Cody, Jeff Bridges as Zeke, Jon Heder as Chicken Joe, James Woods as Reggie, and Zooey Deschanel as Lani. There's also Real Life surfers as the SPEN announcers.
• Celebrity Voice Actor: In the Japanese dub of the first film, Cody is voiced by movie actor Shun Oguri, but he's replaced in the sequel.
• Descended Creator: The In-Universe documentary crew are voiced by the film's actual directors, Ash Brannon and Chris Buck.
• Dueling Movies: With Happy Feet. That film came out on top financially, but it and Surf's Up were just about equally well-received by critics.
• Harpo Does Something Funny: True to the "documentary" aesthetic of the film, much of the dialogue was retroscripted with the actors recording in the same room (or even on the same microphone at times) and ad-libbing off one another.
• The Other Darrin:
  • Jon Heder is the only actor not to reprise his role (Chicken Joe) for the tie-in game, with Jess Harnell replacing him.
  • With the exceptions of Jon Heder (Chicken Joe) and Diedrich Bader (Tank "The Shredder" Evans), all the returning characters are recast in WaveMania.
  • In the Japanese dub of the sequel, Cody is voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya, replacing the aforementioned Shun Oguri.
• Sequel Gap: 10 years between the original film and WaveMania.
• Throw It In!
  • Zooey Deschanel ad-libbed Lani saving a character named Arnold when we first meet her. The filmmakers thought it so funny that an actual Arnold character was designed and given more screen time.
  • The little girl penguin was played by the daughter of one of the directors and recorded all of her lines in their living room. During one recording, their cat went to the litter box and made such an awful smell that she remarked "I think he really has to got to the bathroom right now." The filmmakers turned this into a gag where one of the other little penguins being interviewed nervously poops during the interview.
