• Breaking News Interruption: The original airdate for this episode was pre-empted by the death of Dwight D. Eisenhower. It didn't air until two months later.
• Creator Backlash: Janice Lester's line about Starfleet not admitting female captains was a major source of shame for Gene Roddenberry. The notion that women would not be permitted to command vessels prior to the 2260s was eventually refuted in Star Trek: Enterprise with the character of Capt. Hernandez in the episode "Home", and further blasted to hell by Captain Georgiou.
• Reality Subtext: The episode was written while Gene Roddenberry was reeling from the effects of a nasty divorce, hence Janice Lester's portrayal as a spiteful ex-lover out to ruin Kirk for her own benefit.
• Wag the Director: William Shatner clashed with Director Herb Wallerstein, when Wallerstein wanted Kirk to exit a scene via what was established as a wall. Shat joked that Wallerstein wanted to eject him into the vacuum of space, since it was the final episode.
